om goodness thats a awesome kitty cat in the "back in time" segment nigel
I like the way you go back in time and show the devolopment of this forest.
I love the cat 🐈 💓
You should include cats more in your videos, they are so cute 😍
Great looking forest loved watching the growth I have your kitty cats twin sister Shadow she thinks the same way eat watch you Bonsai nap
I remember the first video of this tree. Cute cat. How come he/she don't make more appearances? Lol
Each of you trees are like characters in a show. I was waiting for this episode especially
I really enjoy these video cuts into the history of your bonsai Nigel. It improves the overall video and makes the whole video even more interesting.
In the past I often thought: Why does Nigel not let that cute cat into the plant room and participate? Please more cat bonsai work in the future, amazing!
G'day Nigel. There is a Norfolk Pine growing a few doors down from me and I just went and measured the trunk. It has a diameter of 2.14 metres or 7 feet and almost double that at the root level. It has also lifted up from ground level by about 75cm or about 2 1/2 feet, so its pretty big. I can only guess at the height - over 100 feet easy. It's a really beautiful tree with incredible trunk flair, you would love it. On another point, Norfolk Pines were planted all along the coasts of Australia in the days of the big sailing ships because of their straight trunks as a ready supply for replacement ships masts. So you see a lot on headlands and beaches all over the country. The only problem is they are no good for ships masts. Not strong enough and the tend to split or break. That's why you still see them everywhere and they are really old. Anyway thanks for the video and Bewdy Bonsaing.
Great info. Wish they were hardy enough to grow outdoors here in the UK. I do have a Wollemi Pine outdoors though.
Very interesting fact 👍🏻, I wondered why they are all over the place , some pretty large old ones around here
It’s nice to see the progression over the years and the “talking” kitty was adorable and funny. Wonderful video, Nigel, as always.
I'd really like to see all your pets in one video
I thought the videos showing the progress of the forest over 5 yrs were amazing. Great job Nigel. Hope you do more like this!
Wow! Very cool for you to put that all together for us! I really enjoyed seeing the time and progression.
In Australia wa Perth there are some Suberbs where every house has one out the frunt
I really enjoyed this video. I remember watching the one with the cat in it thinking that was quite the cat. Thanks for a great video the trees are looking good 😀👍
Oh wow, I need more info on the cat. I hope he/she is still around an we get a recent update on her/him.
There is a park by my house with a 50ft nordfolk and it’s foliage is beautiful
I was watching a video from 2017 and realized it is time for Nigel to prune his hair? :)
Well, just remember, during this pandemic, barber shops and beauty salons have had to be closed! I JUST finally got my gray coloured for the first time in over 18 months two days ago! LOL!
Wow! It was neat to see the progression!
You inspired me with this forest, and I decided to start one myself. Very successful, growing healthy.
Yes I cut them back as well and the react very good
Ps. I grow them in the tropics (Thailand)
Wow Nigel its great to see the timeline here!! like taking a small walk throughout the forest . Always wanted to go to Norfolk Island!!
I really like these recap videos. Thanks Nigel!
They do get pruned and the tops cut off around here and survive really well , I’m too scared to actually prune mine because they cost so much to buy , I do love this family of trees 🌲
Fascinating to see the progression every time I see these for sale I think of your forest
I've just started my first bonsai, an elephant bush! I'm very excited, wish me luck 😊
@@summerhensley4218 Thanks!
😊 I'm back! A year later from when I last posted. My old tree finally died. I now have a new one my son brought me last night at a Black Friday sale at Lowe's. It's pretty good sized so it's not Bonsai material, but I may just go out looking in the next week or so for one of the little ones the stores have as little gifts to try your method.
LOVE how you take us back in time in your video so we can see how it all began!
Thank you! Have a very happy Holiday Season!
This forest fascinates me. It’s starting to show it’s promise. The naysayers can start eating their words. I commented on a previous Norfolk video that I also was told that Auracaria trees can’t be pruned or topped and that their cuttings won’t root. Then one day I saw that a Norfolk in a car sales showroom had been topped and the large top cutting had been rooted and was growing away. I was extremely surprised! ~ Plants have a strong will to survive and grow. Some ‘rules’ of care and culture cannot be broken or the plant might suffer greatly and even perish, like one can’t leave a tropical plant exposed to bitter cold for long or it will freeze. That said, there are endless examples of people pushing the ‘envelope’ of conditions that a plant can not only tolerate but can thrive under. When I previously grew orchids I broke many ‘rules’ regarding the conditions and care that I provided. Most of the plants did fine anyhow. Rules are often written with the circumstances of the authors having undo influence on what’s being recommended. By example an orchid grower in London, U.K. will claim that a certain temperature range is good for a particular species. A grower in Florida of the same species quite likely will swear by a different range of temperatures. Both are following the ‘so called ‘rules’. Anyhow, it’s fun to see you toss the ‘rule book’ aside with this and some of your other bonsai and just get on with experimenting and enjoying the hobby.
I just watched all your Norfolk Island Pine videos in order, and realized you included flashbacks here 🙄 (thank you for that). Prepping to repot mine from nursery to bonsai 🤗 so I’m studying your beautiful muse!
Thanks Nigel. Such a good & informative video. I’ve been a gardener for 40 years but I’m new into Bonsai I love how you explain everything so well.
The few little bonsais I have are doing well in good part from people like you. 😉.
Thank you so very much for sharing your time, knowledge & skill with the rest of us💕
So nice of you!! Thanks
Beautiful Forrest 😍 I had to keep rewatching parts because I was so distracted by your beautiful cat! Stunning work ♡
💯 ! More cat cameos please! 😻💜
I came upon your video by chance when researching repotting my year old Norfolk Norway Pine. Wow! Amazing video showing the progression of your Forest. Lovely!! I think I will take some cuttings from my large tree, and try my hand at a new hobby! Thanks. Truly beautiful.
I know youtube creators love it when they are corrected, so, here I go: It is Nar-fuk :P
Started my own Norfolk Island Pine forest today! Thanks for the video. Can't wait to see how they progress in 5 years.
Can't wait another 5 years for an update on this one! Please update this year!😃
Cheers,
Chris
I will, it's growing once again!

I’ve always loved Norfolk Island Pines and ever since I saw your forest I’ve wanted to make one of my own. I wonder how it would look at the size of your larch forest😁
Cheers,
Chris
Beautiful 💚💚💚
I really like your Norfolk forest. It has an ethereal quality... i expect to see drifts of mist and the flashes of birds’ wings through the branches. Bonsai dreaming...! I myself have two Norfolk pines, non-bonsai, and they are very rewarding to grow. Thanks for the retrospective Nigel. Very informative and enjoyable.
12:22 You might not need those cutting, but I want them :) Nigel sir
nice. In the very Southeast U.S. the Norfolks get tall fast. I had one, about 50' or so, taken out by a hurricane. It was one of my babies. Down in Miami they're larger and taller. Some areas have banned them due to storms blowing them over and falling on other peoples houses, etc. Your video has inspired me to try this forest too.
As someone who isn't doing bonsai but has a Norfolk pine this video is still super useful even to me!! I was wondering why my tree cluster was getting so top-heavy. Thank you for the info! Super clear and concise and personable. Now I can try pruning with a bit more confidence and knowledge!
I thoroughly enjoyed travelling through time to see the Norfolk Island pines progression - top marks Mr Saunders
I’ve always loved this composition. I’m Giving them another go after killing my initial attempt a few year back. Picked up a group of 7 at Home Depot for $10. YIKES! Those roots were a spaghetti of tap roots. Repotted, pruned and fingers crossed 🤞🏻Thanks, keep growing
Thanks for the cutting growing info and video. I had no idea what to do with mine besides a forest setup, i now know what I'm doing with it
Good morning Mr Nigel Can you show us how you grow this plant norfolk from cuttings
It is nice to the the development of these unusual species. I see that everyone has an opinion about what to do, etc, but not based on knowledge or experience... too bad.... I am glad that you do your own experiments... I do that too 😉 It is the Dunning-Kruger effect... let's get more knowledge...
Hi Nigel. That is really nice looking. It look fantastic after the pruning.
Araucaria is one of my favorite trees, it is so lush and tall
that's cat is like, what the hell are you doing? haha so cute! 😀👍
Yes, indeed!
Very good job👍🏽👌
I just bought a pot of Norfolk island pine today. There are 4 pencil thick stems and one really little one. I'm liking the idea of trying to make a bonsai since I have more than one plant to work with. Definitely have to go through your video library to get the necessary info on getting started
Nigel Sir,the pine forest is looking great..
bravo!!
I dont know why this is on of my favorites of your Bonsai collection! I tried doing this forest last year but failed miserably as the trees died within a month or so, got em from Walmart 😔
Hi
Really awesome results for your perseverance with pruning the Norfolk Pines! Couldn’t help noticing that your hair might need some of that careful skill with your scissors LOL! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua
Thanks so much!
I'm glad your experiences have been the opposite of what you've read and heard, they're looking like they'll progress well! Updates on your feline companion too! I need my vicarious, obligatory kitty showcase, my sister in law hates them and won't let me bring mine into the house lol good work as always, mate, keep it up!
Really nice outtro music on this one
I don't know if anyone ever told you but you sound like the Canadian version of Steve Carell! Sweet Trees!
Love your Michigan shirt. I'm a Michigander!!
Love your videos! Just purchased a pre-bonsai forest very insightful in my bonsai journey!
You've really inspired me to try out this species, thanks for this video compilation!
Caught half of the premiere live. Excellent!
Thanks Dave! I'm enjoying your videos, they are always entertaining!
Cool looking forest!
Hey Nigel, Thank you for uploading your great videos more often! I have a question: For you soap and water mixture.. Do you use just regular dish wash soap or special green soap? Thanks for your answer!
Beautiful!
Nice cat
Congratulations Nigel. They're looking real good. And Happy New Year 2021.
awesome series of videos! thanks you so much for these.
Glad you like them!
Thanks for the video - have a couple seedlings of these I'm keen to start working on :)
Hi Nigel, happy new year from France =)
Nigel: 🕑🌱➡️🕓🌿➡️🕕🌲
Everyone (myself included): 😸👀
This species looks really good planted in this style! I think i will try something similiar with some juniper seedlings. Have you ever tried planting a mixed species forest?
Hi Nigel! I noticed that you never use wire on your Trees. Is there a special reason why you dont use it?
Greetings from Germany!
Christoph
This is really awesome to see!
Could you please do a video on getting the cuttings to root? I have a large old Norfolk Island Pine in a pot that's been growing for well over 12 years now. The lower branches gradually died off and the thing is tall and looks absolutely ridiculous and top heavy. I'd like to do some cutting on it to make it into other smaller trees to start over again but am not sure where to start.
Hey Nigel love your stuff but I never see ing a trident maple work. One of my favorite
I would rec not pruning tops and bottoms(roots) at sametime. Roots send hormones to the top, and tops send hormones down. By doing both at the sametime you slow recovery and growth. Thanks for many hours of knoweledge, and inspiration.
Hi Nigel did you add the moss or did it develop on its own and grow over time?
I'm watching you even if I am in online classe 😁😁
Norforks seem
Like they would be incredibly
Hard to create bonsai
With
My friend sent me this video because I just received a Norfolk pine as an early Christmas gift. We were looking at it and wondering if I could bonsai it.
Do you have a starter how to video? 🤔
I purchased a small pot of 5 Norfolk pines and want to make it into a forest bonsai as you describe. Should I root prune and replant in bonsai soil/pot first or trim the top and then do root work later in the year?
I made a Norfolk Island pine bonsai as well. Tried to make it look like a palm tree. Trying to figure out how to send you a photo.
I received a very small Norfolk Pine in 2010. Since that time it has grown about 6 ft tall. Now I have two shoots that have grown on either side. They are about 4 ft. Will I be able to separate them as getting too talk. They are starting to not look as good.
U forget to prune a drooping branch on tree no. 1 !
Hey Nigel very Nice tree’s!
I just got a norfolk pine and i was wondering when can i start reducing It’s hight with hard pruning? Do have to wait a year? or is it best to be quick with this?
If the tree is healthy and in good growing conditions, you should be able to start pruning. The danger is when you buy a tree from a nice greenhouse, bring it home where it gets less light, prune it and then the tree has a hard time recovering. If you have it in a nice bright window, it should make the transition OK. It might be best to do more of a light prune and see how the tree reacts before diving in on hard pruning! The hard pruning might work, but it is more risky.
Hi Nigel. You used to have a mytle tree, myrtus communis,, do you still have it still ? would love to see a video on it
Someone gave me one of these bout 15 years old in a huge pot. It's about 16 foot tall . I've always had the idea to chop it down to make it more manageable but I'm worried it will die . I live in Florida and they grow in the ground everywhere but none are ever good examples of a trunk chop . What do you think
why is mine browning at the bottom/ on some leaves? i water it perfectly and give it enough sun! i even made sure it’s nowhere near my heater and has humidity (w my humidifier and misting) IDK WHAT IM DOING WRONG
After seeing one of your previous videos in this series I bought one Norfolk pine about a year ago but never got around to replanting our pruning, maybe because I wanted to see how they grew first (indoors). But they haven't really changed at all. Still looking like an inverted triangle (not nice!) They have what looks like shoots at the top but nothing has happened there. What's the next step to make them come alive? Prune off the top? Replanting in bonsai substrate?
Repot in a well-draining soil, fertilize, put the tree in a sunny place, and then sit back. Completely soak the pot whenever the top inch or two of soil feels dry.
They kinda look like tiny palm trees, its giving me ideas about a tropical themed bonsai 🥴
Woohoo
Please, what is back bud?
Feedback: The recap felt really long. People can find the detailed work in the fantastic playlists, and so you could cut the recap shorter. My personal opinion. It is a good idea with a recap section in the videos, if you have the energy to make them. Really good work Nigel =)
We needed to see the cat properly
@@OliverJazzz Totally agree to that =)
90% of species are "unsuitable for bonsai" for some ones 😋😋
Cat eat robin?hhe
...bonsai bob?
Bob's your uncle!
Again to late to be first.
there a cycad not a pine
You have something against combing your hair.
Foist
I started my own forest of these pines last summer. They are growing great so far! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
The Foist is strong in you!
