Foxx was so mesmeric. A great song and this is a great example of the talents of Ultravox BU. In my opinion Ultravox 2 without Fox were an entirely different band.
The original Ultravox was such a great band, and so under-rated. Wonderful version of one of their best songs. John Foxx was ahead of so many others when it came to 80s electronic work. Love "The Garden".
Personally, I rate this far more than the studio version. There is no sax. However I think its a fantastic live version. The vocals and instruments bring the track to life. Classic is an overused word, but applies here.
This is the lineup (the best lineup, of course original guitarist Stevie Shears was a good good guitarist on their first to albums) of Ultravox that I saw in concert in March of 1979 at the Whiskey A Go-Go in West Hollywood, California. I was 23 that year.
Uploaded this a couple of years ago sti one of my favourite pieces ultravox were so different back then stylish, original, atmospheric met Mr foxx at South shields &London when solo great fella!!
Thanks so much for doing that, much appreciated! Someone somewhere has the high quality version that used to be on RUclips. Maybe one day that will surface again :-)
+Sally Smith Hey Sally, for me, Yes, you are totally correct. Like Grand Funk Rail Road in the early 70's, Ultravox was quite a unique up and coming group, true their sound and vision. When I saw them perform at the Whiskey A-Go-Go all I could say about their show was............"mesmerizing"!
Well that was the 70s. The last great year for experimentation and freedom of expression in all forms of music. I doubt any band wants to stay in the margins forever. U-Vox put out several great albums before hitting it big with Midge. Took me awhile to warm up to their new sound but I love the commercial stuff too.
This is pure inspired music. The OG version on HaHaHa has it's own beauty, but this is something else. I wish there were a proper remastered version of this performance. I may be reading into this but this version seems to point towards Metamatic & Vienna simultaneously. In the same way I'm happy that Roxy Music & Eno split, I'm happy that John and UV parted. So much great music was made as a result.
近いうちに彼らがオリジナルメンバーで来日してくれる事を願っています。かなり難しそうですが。 I hope that they have us come to Japan with the original members in the near future. Although it is quite likely difficult.
Don't agree regarding Japan... Although influenced by artists such as Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground , New York Dolls , Roxy Music and David Bowie , the two albums were not well received by the UK music press being out of fashion at a time when the punk rock of 1977 and new wave were on the rise. In 1979 the band worked briefly with producer Giorgio Moroder , who produced a single single, Life in Tokyo . The song represented a significant change in musical style from their previous guitar-heavy recordings, moving them away from their glam rock roots and into a more original phase closer to more electronic new wave, exposing it to a wider audience.
Loud conventional rock drumming? Yeah, it's really conventional to have been playing with perfect metronomic time along with a drum machine in 1978. He totally should have been playing linear post-rock fills with a pseudo jazz touch. It would've given it more of an NPR bumper music vibe and I think John Foxx would be smiling instead of having that detached look that I've NEVER seen him with aside from this video. I don't even know why I'm bothering commenting on this, save the fact that Warren Cann was a ridiculously innovative drummer who was VERY ahead of the curve in regards to blending acoustic drums with electronics, had impeccable time, and touch. At least read a little bit about what Warren did in the band and the mods he made on their synths and drum machines before you just throw some dismissive conjecture out.
Robin Simon was on the 3d album (1978) 'Systems of Romance'. Both John Foxx and Robin Simon left Ultravox late March of 1979 after I saw them around early or about the middle of that month at the Whiskey A Go-Go West Hollywood, California.
Poetry. This man is one of the most underrated artists of all time.
This version of the band deserved more success just love the three albums they did with Foxx.
They were brilliant. 😊
Foxx was so mesmeric. A great song and this is a great example of the talents of Ultravox BU. In my opinion Ultravox 2 without Fox were an entirely different band.
Agreed.
Completely different band.
Foxx was the more interesting front man.
John Foxx is one of the most enigmatic figures from the dawn of electronic music. A pioneer in the truest sense of the word.
I agree.
We have such similar tastes in everything.
It's almost like we're related...
The original Ultravox was such a great band, and so under-rated. Wonderful version of one of their best songs. John Foxx was ahead of so many others when it came to 80s electronic work. Love "The Garden".
saw them at the old marquee a few times in london-brilliant band
indeed a more interesting band at the time
Absolute genius.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant..i never tire from watching this video
Best Music ever....
One of my favorites, from either period of Ultravox.
Personally, I rate this far more than the studio version. There is no sax. However I think its a fantastic live version. The vocals and instruments bring the track to life. Classic is an overused word, but applies here.
Easily the best version of this performance I've seen online. Ultravox at their absolute best.
whistle test had some great bands doing great performances .. check out Public image , careering .... its rough but awesome
I love this band, beautiful song
So cool ! .. the best Roxy Music song that Roxy never did !...I wonder how people undetstand ? ...your'e quite right ( jubilee64 ).
John Foxx is so damn hot - then and now (I saw supporting Numan a few years ago) - he has aged well, and now is the near definition of a Silver Fox.
@ 2:57 I love that keyboard solo...i can hear it on a loop all day.
listening to early ultravox is like early human league like totally different bands to when they were hitmakers amazing.
Love the early stuff of HL!
mean fretless bassline so raw and blunt kicks ass
Loved a fretless bass. Mick Karn of Japan was so good with it too.
Somehow we drifted off too far
Communicate like distant stars
Splintered voices down the phone
The sunlit dust, the smell of roses drifts, oh no
Someone waits behind the door
Hiroshima mon amour
Riding inter-city trains
Dressed in European grey
Riding out to echo beach
A million memories in the trees and sands, oh no
How can I ever let them go?
Hiroshima mon amour
Meet beneath the autumn lake
Where only echoes penetrate
Walk through Polaroids of the past
Futures fused like shattered glass, the suns so low
Turns our silhouettes to gold
Hiroshima mon amour

A true classic!!
John Foxx, legend
I love this track very much ... maybe one of the first of the New Romantic era before it even started ... 🥰🙏
3:01 Here the synth plays the saxophone line in the studio release of the song.
Fantastic!

so right tom about mick karn on fretless dig his playing on canvas on oil life, have a good day .
I was already a fan of Midge's lineup but this one is a brilliant gem!
The drumming is incredible
Thanks so much for doing that, much appreciated! Someone somewhere has the high quality version that used to be on RUclips. Maybe one day that will surface again :-)
"IN MEMORIAM": CHRIS CROSS (1952-2024)

ruclips.net/video/xRXKpW1pieQ/видео.html
so good.
Magic new wave
Great! The old Ultravox was more risk-taking and idea-inspired than the Ure commercial version.
+Sally Smith The other three members of the Ure version are here in this video. Midge Ure can't be blamed for everything

Its so easy and fashionable to slag off the Midge line up off but their surely both valid in their own way in my opinion.

@@stephenbailes2750 They have performed this on stage with Midge Ure singing.

Pezzo. Bellissimo. Bei. Ricordi
The played Slow Motion straight to this. Does anyone have it?
Good ol' Dennis and Billy and others...
Warren Cann - Very under-rated drummer. Still have to say that the version on the b-side of Rockwrock is far superior - Go check it out.
Stephen Watt I was very good friends with them all and I agree with you totally about Warren ... I like ALL their stuff
Sorry but this version is excellent and far superior. The remix on the B-side of Rockwrock is pretty awful.
Classic
Wish I could get this version on cd/download I-tunes anything.
There was a version floating around on RUclips of Slow Motion from this session but it got removed. I wish someone would repost it :-(
I give in john
'77 eh?
The sound of the '80s came from this.
found it and uploaded - see the video response
Is that an envelope filter on the bass?
Without Ultravox there would not have been Gary Numan, Depeche Mode or Human League or Japan
Don't agree regarding Japan...

Kinda Magazine like this take vg
Great with John Foxx - too bad it couldn't last.

It's the only ultravox
Great as it is you can tell John is done with the loud conventional rock drumming going on behind him.

This can't be 1977 as Robin Simon on guitar wasn't with them then.
5th December 1978, but not listed on the (incomplete) OGWT list of who-appeared-when.
Robin Simon was on the 3d album (1978) 'Systems of Romance'. Both John Foxx and Robin Simon left Ultravox late March of 1979 after I saw them around early or about the middle of that month at the Whiskey A Go-Go West Hollywood, California.

Fantastic !
