  • Here is a video on how to clean Input select switch, Speaker select switch. Volume, Bass, treble & Balance control
    May notice a channel cutting out or crackling noise
    In this video I will be demostrating on a Pioneer sa 5300 Amplifier
    But any make such as Marantz, Sansui, Akai, Sony, Yamaha, Nad, Rotel etc
    would be pretty much the same.

    Wauw, I've actually had one of those! Really good amplifier that unfortunately got lost during one of my many between country moves.

      One of the dustist ones I have come across, I just did a quick control clean for a sound check, though looking back now dont know why I did not clean it all at the same time. will get around to a full re-cap on this I think. We have signed contracts and have been told exchange date sould be very soon, so in limbo until then, but a bit of panic packing as also set in lol. Thanks agaim Mike and all the best Michael

    These old school open type selectors were always prone to contact issues. Even cheapest sealed relays are more reliable than expensive switches

    I just refurbed one of these and replaced all the caps. I don't know why you didn't clean the whole unit out of dust, that stuff is caked all over the unit!
    A small air hose or compressor, but just cleaning the pots and faders without removing all the other rubbish in the unit, is kind of half incomplete.
    A quick spray of isopropyl all over and blast and rinse the board would also have been helpful.
    Each to their own I guess, but you did explain the potentiometers very well, and how they work.
    Nice photos too.

      Hi and thanks for the comment. Yeh this is one of the worse amps I have had for dust inside.. These were pictures I took quite a while ago now when just quickly cleaning the controls for a channel review. I was going to get back to the soon and do a re-cap and clean with the full video including these pictures. But I had a sub that asked about cleaning the input select switch as they were getting intermintate contact on the phono input on their sa5300, so I quickly put this together for them really, but thought it might help others out on cleaning switches and pots.

      @@MichaelYates Ahh I see, that makes sense, Thankyou for the reply back :) For a small little amp, these things sound great in my opinion! Easy to repair, great access to the pcb also. I use mine everyday running my computer audio and turntable through it since bringing it back from the dead, I'm that impressed with it. Maybe it's the big aluminum eye candy knobs I like ahaha!

      It is them "big aluminum eye candy knobs" that appeal to lots of people I think

    Good tutorial Michael. I did start dust removal with cotton buds but found some soft bristle artist brushes from the pound shop did a much better job ( my top tip of the day ) .

    Hi Michael
    Just came across your video, thanks very much, it's helped a lot to see how the cleaning has to be done.
    I have an Optonica SM- 4646 amp that has a scratchy right channel (left is fine) I think its the selector switch as nothing happens when i twist all the others switches but when I push or pull the selector switch it can induce it or and clear it.
    Do you think it's just a good clean that's needed ?
    All the best
    Terry

      Hi Terry, 9 times out of 10 a good given the switch a good clean with some switch cleaner will cure the noise, its only now and then a new switch maybe required.

    My Yamaha RN 602 volume knob is not working. I am able to change volume by remote control. What can be the probable causes and solutions for this issue?

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  Год назад +1

      Seems the volume pot is on a little board of its own, check from dry joints on its board, any cracks in the board. Could be the control itself so use a meter set on ohms to see if the control changes value as you turn it. check connections from its board to main board. if all that checks out, it could be the IC that controls the volume input from the volume control knob

    Hi, thanks for your video, a friend has one of these and was using the record player and their speakers started to burn. I understand that can happen if pushing too much power through. They aren't one to rattle their windows so could it have been the speakers were underpowered for the unit, or a fault within the unit?

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  8 месяцев назад

      Sounds like the speakers are not rated high enough. Though it is possible that the unit is passing DC voltage through its outputs. But I would check the speaker ratings first

      There are horror stories involving split supply direct coupled amps with all transistors in a STK chip, if a CE short occurs, the woofer gets burned up quickly, in worse cases I've read a Electronics Australia serviceman story about a Sansui amp amp almost seting the speaker on fire.I've had a Realistic STA 130 shit itself on me while playing fullblast, taking out speaker@@MichaelYates

    Sir my stereo amp board have lot of moisture dust how to clean board and preamp kit any good suggestion

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  Год назад +1

      I would use a toothbrush gently around board to get all the dust off, then use isopropyl alcohol to clean the board. and leave in a warm place like an airing cupboard where the emersion heater is for a day or 2 to dry out, if there is a lot of mositure then maybe in an oven, but I have not tried the oven myself so could be a little risky, I have heard to bring the oven upto around 60c and turn it off and place board inside for a few hours, I would try the few days in a warm place first.

    My volume switch on my pioneer amp crackles when you turn the knob

    • @MichaelYates
      @MichaelYates  10 месяцев назад

      One squirt of cleaner should do the trick, unless the pot is shot which normally is only a small chance of being noisey beyound cleaning.
