he doesn't hove one yet, but he does have a cover story arc prior to Wano where you can see a more fleshed out view of Caribou as a person, as he slinks around, treats his mates, his unexpected soft side, or pride at inopportune moments, which is why i love this story more, even at the smallest glimpses, there's a wider world for even the miniscule fellas
I think this just speaks to the greatness of Oda, the storytelling, the character work, themes and worldbuilding is insane. Each island feels like a living and breathing world, and characters can be the main characters of a manga or anime themselves, even side characters like Senior Pink, Corazon, Law, Whitebeard and so so many more.
His best work has got to be Water 7. Easily most memorable Island for me.

Something I always thought was genius in One Piece's themes right down to language is that in Japanse pirate is "Kaizoku", and family is "Kazoku"

I love that so many side characters could get their own spin offs like in the case of Ace. I sort of hope that once OP is over Oda just comes out with One Piece Backstories (aka 0 Piece) and each arc focuses on a different side character's fleshed out flashback. Oda's just made a world that can do that kind of thing. On a side note, I too love Toto.
Idk if you are aware but Ace already has a side story!!! It’s not written by Oda but it was supervised by Oda, so a lot of people consider it canon if you wanna read Ace’s story

I totally agree. Tekking made this point with Koby that someone could write an entirely new manga from Koby's perspective. I saw someone say once about Alabasta that it's really Vivi's story, the Straw Hats happen to be there. Same thing with Skypeia and Wyper, Fishman Island and Shirahoshi, Wano and Momnosuke, and Egghead and Bonney. The Straw Hats are also a vehicle for these other stories, not just their own.

I thought it was impossible for Oda to make us care about another non-Straw Hat like he did with Law, but my god what Oda did with Bonney and Kuma is amazing.
I just want to give both of them a big hug.
There are times in the story where Oda will flesh out a character to such a stunning degree in such a short and out no where period of time that I almost think he's just showing off.
He reads 1 too many comments about how better writers wouldn't need 1000 chapters to flesh out a character and he just spins a wheel to pick some random bastard he thought up and turn them into a fan favorite with no more than 10 chapters.
Law is a straw hat he just doesn't realize it yet, him and Bepo gonna be joining up lol
I feel like the strengh and trick to oda and other popular vets in shonen magazine are getting the opprotunity to be able to subvert writing rules. We see this with many new commers who dont get the fanbase exactly ready for it such as jjk and chainsawman where they write what they enjoy and hope you like it vs just what they think the fans will like ala fairy tail. None of these are bad series...just examples. HXH makes gon feel like a secondary character on purpose for example. Luffy is loved but he doesnt always matter in the minor scope. This gives ample time to make something watchers dont notice better, the villians, the world, the other characters etc. Its why infinity war is beloved, they made you see the story from the villians side. The story on paper isnt deep or the mindblowing marvel film in fact their are better marvel movies on paper. New marvel does it sometimes but alot of the time were getting what they think the audience wants...main characters always on screen, etc. Makes for weaker villians, weaker plots, etc.
A moment I really loved was when at the end of Wano, as the curtains were drawing to a close, we see Momo walking away with the Scabbards and excitedly wondering where he should hang the Strawhat flag.
It's like even though the Strawhats left on their own journey, Wano will rebuild itself under Momo and as readers, we cant WAIT to see what Wano is like the next time we visit.
One of my favorite instances of this is Zou where the minks are saved because of shockwaves of what the crew does in a completely place distracting the baddies

Senor Pink might be my favourite example of this. Sure his story isn’t as grand as some of the others and he’s not as major a character but the fact that Oda can take such a weird, unimportant character and give him a five minute backstory that hits so deep and completely changes them is amazing.
Actually now that I think about it, it is actually crazy how connected One Piece is. Take Boa for example:
Luffy punched a celestial dragon and got sent to Boa who was a slave of the celestial dragon that got freed because of Fisher Tiger who was involved in Fishman Island and Queen Otohime’s conflict.
Queen Otohime then managed to change Donquixote Mjosgard’s way of looking at life and be human. He then helped the Straw Hat grand fleet during Reverie which then lead to his execution and the introduction of the God Knights (potentially Shanks’ uncle/dad)
And that is just one example. Pretty sure there are dozens other examples
As soon as the picture of Toto flashed on the screen I started to tear up thinking about his story. I don't think I've ever been moved that much by such a relatively small piece of any work of media.
Merphy you forgot the hard boiled Senor Pink. But seriously, Oda does his side characters insanely well, whether it is just dedicating just a few panels or an entire 5 chapter backstory. Truly amazing and one of the main reasons why the world of One Piece is so rich.
TBH with no biases for One Piece. I really wish from the bottom of my heart that alot of schools will encourage for their students to try to read One Piece. It'll definitely give inspiration to the youth to write novel of their own or as a social individual in the future like "smile, just smile even when you're sad" mindset

After One Piece main storyline finishes, Oda could spend the rest of his life writing (under no deadlines) all sort of side-stories and backstories of characters and places he wanted to expend upon but couldn't during his weekly publication of the main story. and we would read it all.

Not only does the world feel expensive and alive because of the narratives woven together expanded from all angles but the extreme detail he goes into flushing out the smallest elements of insignificant parts of the world adds to that immersion. For example, I still love to this day that the fly in the soup from 1,070 chapters ago has a name and made it on to the top 100 favorite character list at one point. His name is Betchee😊
Backstory OP is probably the best bit of OP. I remember reading Oden's back story which lasted months that I almost forgot we were reading OP.
One of the best things that Oda does is build the world through the back stories of side characters. So many of these side characters are intertwined that it makes the world feel real. The way he reveals pieces of information that compound over time makes it satisfying as well.
great vid! absolutely agree, but it’s almost to a fault in Post-Timeskip for me. With the exception of Whole Cake Island, i feel like the Strawhats get lost in the plot a lot.
For a direct comparison, take the princesses of Alabasta vs. Dressrossa. I don’t really remember much interaction between Rebecca and anybody besides Luffy(and Lucy). Compare that to all the relationships Vivi has with each Strawhat.

Rebecca was almost shut away on one place on a single island in one Arc... She didnt get the chance to interact with more than two strawhats (Luffy and Robbin) especially because half of them sailed away at the beginning...
These big bulky arcs dont feel like a travel adventure any more... We go to a new place and stay there for at least 100 chapters... With Vivi we visited 5 different islands in around the same amount of time I assume

I think One Piece has truly changed how I view stories now. I can’t help but think that some series could be so much more or characters could be expanded. It’s such an interesting feeling.

One piece world is way bigger than its main character and that's a fact, there's a reason why luffy or other shs yet to achieve their dream bc one piece just isn't about them, although they're main players of this manga but there are other characters too, people need to realise that luffy becoming pirate king is not the main goal of one piece as a whole.

One piece most interesting things are world history and dynamics and how the powers behave and act and overall plot & storytelling to me and zoro too
The much more amazing thing to notice dat JUST last year in 2023 or even when this arc started , nearly or more than 50% of the chapters that released weren't even focused on the strawhats at all!
The reverie reveal, Beehive island focus, law and kid focus , the goresei names and imu lore reveals, kumas backstory and more !! Just goes to show how the series provides enough spotlight for other side characters to shine and tie in their motivations in the story making their very existence also pivotal to the story !!

But I also hope that our main cast the strawhats - and I talk about all of them not just Luffy - will get their spotlights again soon...

I'm pretty convinced Oda has full backstories for all his named characters. In an SBS he hinted at Monet and Sugar's backstory. And we actually saw Baby 5 and Senõr Pink's backstory.
I'd love to read an anthology that's just the story of all the Don Quxiote family officers' backstories. Watch Oda make us cry over fucking Trebol.
I think the best person to follow after one piece would be Koby. Depending on what could happen by the end, it’d be very interesting following his exploits and how him and his comrades operate post Pirate Kings ascension. He’s one of the few good Marines out there so seeing him clash with other units and pirates alike would be interesting.
It really does feel like if there's ever a one piece "continuation" it'd definitely have to be Koby. Heck I'm still holding out hope that we'll get the flashbacks between him and hibari in the anime since oda only revealed it in an sbs.

I love this. I too, really like the abstract characters that wasn't in the story for too long. While my top five favorite characters are in order: Corazon, Law, Zoro, Luffy and Aokiji, the character that stands out to me and I would like to see more of is Dadan. I really feel for her. it's strange having this great connection, empathy and sympathy for a character who was not in story for very long. I, too, would follow any spin-off of One Piece once this main story is done.
It’s funny you saying it would be easier to pick favorite characters with how many well written ones there are, cause for me, it’s the opposite. There are so many great characters in this series that evening leaving the straw hats out, it would still be Damn near impossible for me to make a top 10 even at that. 😂
In the manga/anime world the most exciting moments are usually the fight scenes. In one piece it's what's comes after.

I loved this video but from 10:34 for the next few minutes, I really loved this! Thats such a great way of explaining how to make a world feel more lived in and not just a sandpit for the main character/s! I really need to remember this, so good 👍
The amazing thing about one peice is that there are tons of other characters that could be the main character. Coby, law, kid, hell even buggy could be the main character and they all have compelling stories and a great story could be told about them. That's what makes the world of one piece so amazing. It's a living breathing world. And interesting things happen all over the place all the time. Cross guild is off doing stuff, black beard is off making moves, sabo is having his whole adventure. Tons of things are going on all the time. It makes one piece really special.
It's interesting how instead of making new stories, Oda focused these character ideas and motivations into a single narrative.
It led to a single story with a lot of different characters with well known and explored backstory and motivations, and because these side characters are on the move and doing things, it gives a sense of liveliness, an interconnected feeling that only real life and extremely old concurrent worlds have.
In 27 years of publication, Oda managed to create a universe that feels as alive and complete as the comic giants have managed to do in more than 60 years, and without even a third of all the bullshit too. For that he deserves a lot of respect.

Of all the One Piece channels I follow, you're the only one that still waits for the official translation before doing your review (other channels I follow USED TO wait for the official translation, but they have all given up on that and started reacting and reviewing based on the scanlations). I hope you never change that!

You kinda made me notice that Luffy’s journey to become Pirate King might be the overall goal; but he’s getting there by just being a helpful person. He makes genuine connections with other characters and they want to help him achieve that goal, because of his kindness.

Oda is a genius storyteller. I feel like he could have been a person who wrote a couple of dozen fiction novels and built an impressive collection of works that way. But instead he decided to put ALL of those ideas into a single piece of work, and to illustrate it beautifully as well. I like the approach he took.
I was reading a thread earlier about what would happen if Blackbeard got the Dark fruit without killing Thatch, and the fact that you could reasonably brainstorm at least 6 different chains of events that do and don't occur of that small change is a testament of how fleshed out characters and events are in this story.

Funny to my experience that you used Luffy punching Vivi dead in the face as I just got to that the other day and was like, "WTF?!"
A friend once told me as a gaming creator, and artist, she loves that many background characters have back stories the artist made for them. The only problem is you might never know those stories because the game has a limited duration. But here we have One Piece, which has taken its time, so it can flush those out too. Even main stream American comics don;t really do this.
It sounds like Oda treats One Piece like an MMO then, as the worlds change as the players play. Ever read or see the film Ready Player One? I expect when our VR becomes better, when we can dive into virtual worlds that seem full and complete, One Piece will be one of the worlds people can go play in. I'll see you (all) there! Although, I'll be spending time in a Galaxy Far Far Away too, and Star Trek, and various D&D worlds, and Blade Runner, and so on.

Well, yeah. I think since Sabaodi Mugiwaras weren't the focus of storylines. They were mostly about islands, their inhabitants and their struggles. Mugiwaras were just part of the situation.
One thing I love about One Piece is that arcs happen because the crew did something to make things happen. Things didn't just magically happen because the main characters arrived like in so many popular media. Like a rebellion started coincidentally because they are main chars. Maybe not all arcs but mostly
1. Alabasta - took in a Princess on a whim >> Croc has to speed up preparations so Vivi cant interfere
2. Skypiea - rebellion started due to Luffy, Sanji, and Chopper beating the ball priest
3. Water 7 - CP9 started moving because of Robin's presence
4. Thriller Bark - The crew didn't really actively do anything to get chaos into the island BUT Kuma goes to Moria to warn him about warlords dying left and right which led to 'Nothing happened' and more
5. Saboady - taking in a mermaid as a friend >> CD shennanigans
6. Fishman Island - i guess the new fishmen pirates' rebellion was a coincidence but Zoro did help them get rid of security
7. Punk Hazard - their alliance with Law leads to Doffy abdicating the throne
8. Dressrossa - The rebellion happened because they thought Doffy stepped down
9. Zou - Jack's crew had to rescue Doffy so they moved out
10. WCI - the thing is, yes, the things happen here happened not because the SH caused it to occur BUT ever since Sanji got his bounty, (water 7) the ugly poster gag was low key a way for Sanji to avoid Germa 66. Until in Dressrossa where he got a legit face, then he was sought after
11. Wano - Luffy taking in Kin'emon and Momo and making them his pals led to rebellion
12. Egghead - they didn't cause the chaos kinda but the fact that Luffy is the emperor kinda contributed to the fact that they sent so many troops

As a fellow big avatar fan, I am kinda sad that you haven' talk about it, yet. 5) Bellamy's journey to Skypiea.
4) Blackbeard's attack on Drum Kingdom.
3) Robin's time in The Revolutionary Army.
2) Rocky Port Incident.
1) Zoro's time as a bounty hunter.
When one piece was still young-ish every time the story turned away briefly from the main characters it was like "oh cool that's refreshing, let's see what new mysteries Oda brings us" but you still kinda felt the SHs being in the center. Nowadays what feels different and (for lack of a better word) refreshing is to actually see the whole crew together doing their thing, and they feel so small in such a big world (I'm not saying they ARE small hahah, but when you go back to them after the whole Kuma flashback, Saturn, Kidd, Shanks, Law, Garp... they feel like such a small dust particle on this HUGE world that keeps moving no matter what) and I think part of that effect that Oda managed to create on One Piece and not many stories have, is thanks to how long it's been going for. We've grown and evolved with that world too, even if you just started reading months ago, it's still a long time and a looooong story to live through
One piece having a huge world and being more than just about the main cast is a strength that I feel now has turned into a weakness
Because since the timesekip the straw hats has been gradually getting less and less shine with each arcs , usopp last shine was in dressrosa 400 chapters ago
I understand people loving more focus on other characters but it shouldn't be at the expenses of the main cast

i havent watched or read one piece but its a double edge sword, in this day and age people want a huge amount of entertainment and content and One Piece is the king at having that, we can try to separate Oda from One piece but in reality he has the blessing of the shonnen jump, its better for both parts to have 1500 chapters, it means more money in manga, anime, live actions, re adaptations, merch, parks, etc. And Oda likes it, he feels kinda healthy so he doesnt have the pressure of an amateur or broke artist that needs to have a constant tight story to get a paycheck, and tight stories usually end quickly, the total opposite would be Death Note, there is a simple device that moves the whole story, probably like 10 characters and 3 that take the spotlight, One Piece takes a more eastern and femenine approach to storytelling, being patient and taking detours and delaying and end that he probably has planned but has changed with time, everything is more fluid and ambiguous, a more curated version of One Piece could be Avatar, we follow a crew with a mission, new members come, the backstories hit hard but its more digestable and tight and still hold high in quality, more western and to the point, you could explore some characters or places, but it decide to not do it and finish the story in the normal beats and time

You hit the nail of the head with the comment regarding how so many characters are as compelling as even the main crew. I would love a whole arc or spin off series for Mihawk, Shanks, Ace, Whitebeard, Roger... Heck, even an entire arc or spin off series of Blackbeards journey to where he ends up would be awesome to read .
We know so little about who is one of the main antagonists of the series, yet what we do know is super interesting. The idea that fact that he apparently doesn't sleep. Or him killing a crewmate for his devil fruit. All of his schemes that we get glimpses of throughout the story. I would love to see all that through his perspective and his inner landscape during it all. I recently went back and watched his introduction in the Jaya arc and I was reminded how immediately likable he was. It's wild that he's such a major antagonist while displaying some really respectable attributes, like when he told Nami that Luffy and Zoro won the fight when they allowed themselves a beating in the bar -- mirroring the confidence and integrity of Shanks and Luffy.
It seems like one piece is a goofy human study at times. The way oda uses the history of the world to write. How much any character can resenate with people. It's a great story and I'm all the way here for it.

One Piece does this so well. Few other series compare to the way side characters are used, though ones that come close are Gintama and the Trails series of games.
This is perhaps why "One Piece" continues to captivate audiences for over 25 years, consistently leaving them eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

I feel like Oda writes as everyone is a main characters. There's the main crew, and then there's the main characters of the arc. That's why the crew can be broken up, not apart of an arc, or even absent for a flashback and everything is fine. The main characters are all here so it never feels like anything is missing. And who doesn't love a good flash back of the main characters?
The Straw Hat Crew in arcs are often ensemble cast to the actual main character of whatever arc we're playing around with and the story is only stronger for it. They're like that one character you see in a movie who comes from somewhere, helps out the main cast, looks really cool, is so badass, and then they just go off do their thing while the main characters enjoy having succeeded in their goal. One Piece is a story that follows that cool guy to whatever adventure he gets into after the movie while each arc is one of those movies. That's some damned special effort in writing to pull that off so well.

The one thing I have slowly realized watching/ reading this series for 10 years at this point, is without luffy the series would be a grimdark fantasy. He is THE character that makes everything bright, which is fascinating because of the themes surrounding his powers and the themes of dawn and the first arc, romance dawn. So theoretically the story would function without the main characters, but in a very different light (no pun intended) than what we see following luffy around.

I agree wholeheartedly. One Piece is a story that can continue without the crew. With so many interesting characters, Oda could just sit back and make bank off of any of their stories. Bellemere's journey from Cocoyashi Village to become a Marine would be an interesting five to ten chapter short story that could be written by another aspiring Mangaka and supervised by Oda. The Shimotsuke Clan's trip to East Blue, Lily D. Nefertari's past (if we don't get it during the main story line). I hope we can get some spin-off stories to further expand on the lore and to learn about some beloved characters. When I see the stories from Roger's time, I feel like there's so much there ripe for abuse XD

In my experience, there are other authors who tried to take away the spotlight from the main character(s). However, it's really boring that makes me want to just skip it. I never have this problem with One Piece tbh
