To me though, as a bass player, I think bass lacks are way more forgiving if you stuff up....just my personal inexperience.😂😂 Not taking away from Robert's brilliance of course. He is an absolute gun! I take nothing away from him in dealing with Lers's deviations as well....not that Lars isn't in sync or an excellent drummer, but he definitely like to improvise sometimes.
One would think before the tour starts they would go over things individually at home so something like this on a time crunch wouldn't happen. I mean, you have a selection of maybe 60 songs they might play per tour, with a few taken in and out each night to vary it up. Assuming each song averages about 6-8 minutes, that's around 20 songs a show for 2 hours, maybe 25 songs if they do 2 1/2 hours. And, instead of their breakneck 88-94 touring pace, they do only about 50 shows a year now and only play big venues, so most of their time is going to be spent traveling from gig to gig and getting all the logistics down on the crew's end. The actual playing time on stage is only going to be 125 hours a year minus traveling, or about 20 minutes a day average out over 365 days a year. Fewer chances to fail, but failure is going to be on a bigger scale, and everyone will notice and it will be recorded. I love the guys, but the least they could do is have this stuff together before they enter the rehearsal room. Pro musicians on their level would probably be in agreement. I wouldn't want to go back to my own album to listen and relearn the part 15 mins before the show. Too stressful. There's improvisation, but usually it's on the solos and drum fills, not the actual riffs.
"To Error is Human" Just shows how real these guys are, memorize 200+ songs and you can get confused as you get older think of how many gigs they have done! Metallica!!!
I just came from watching videos of Metallica playing concerts during the black album tour to this and it gave me whiplash (no pun intended) on how much James has changed in his personality. He went from being ego-centric as hell to just being funni ol granpappy.

Have done a few off the cuff demos, where later I can’t figure how the fuck I played something that sounded cool to me. You feel insane because you know what you would probably do but still can’t quite get it.
Behringer P16. Those are old videos. The P16s are actually good enough. If i remember correctly they used to bring a whole production studio to rehearsal rooms. Times have changed. Now that they're running into Fractal Audio AxeFX, instead of amps, those rehearsals don't need the most expensive InEar Mixers anymore.
They use iPads for lyrics and cheat sheets. If you mean the silver rectangle box, it's a Behringer P16. Personal Monitor mixer. It allows each member to individually set their preferred levels for their inears, without having to ask anyone else to do it for them. And the big boxes on the ground are foot controllers that control their digital amps. They switch between different presets and sounds.
