Mine has lasted about 8 years and finally got a hole in it. Another trick is to connect your hose to the blower side (back of unit), lift the top off with the filter still attached and use itself to blow the dirt and dust off the outside.

Thanks for the shirt idea. I used zip ties instead of a rubber band. So far so good.

I use a pool filter sock. Makes for a tight fit on those shopvac filters and works well.
