Great demonstration of this snare! I actually bought one a month ago and love it! One thing I found is that with the die cast hoops, I found my tension rods backing out quite frequently. To the point where I finally bought some locks for the rods. Small price to pay for a "budget-friendly Black Beauty". Also, I'd like to suggest putting some text indicators on screen as you move in between tuning, so that viewers can keep track of what tuning you are at. Video was great still!
Thanks, Thomas! Unfortunately the tension rod loosening is something that occurs with Ludwig metal snares - at least the ones that I have all do it, only where I play rim shots though. I use Revolution drums lug locks which work great! Thanks for the suggestion! That's something I usually do, and completely forgot this video. I did put time stamps in the description incase one needs to skip to a specific tuning, but I totally see why having text indicators would help. 2:57 - Low Tuning 3:47 - Medium Low Tuning 4:39 - Medium High Tuning 5:21 - High Tuning 6:05 - Cranked Tuning
Just bought one and immediately I put on new snares. I went with the Tama 42 strand and even though I only got the triple flanged hoops it sounds marvelous. I picked up a 8x14 because I already own a 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty. Great Video!!
Nice, @ramonkey2939 ! Did you get a chance to play with the stock wires - I'm curious to how the new wires changed the sound. I did the exact opposite - I had an 8X14 black beauty and got the 6.5X14 Universal Black Brass🤣. Looks like we're on the same wavelength !
@@NickCostaMusic I did try the stock wires and they were good. I saw a few RUclipsrs stating they switched out their wires and I had a 42 TAMA laying around so I decided to see how that would sound at a low tuning with the 42 and it was awesome.
Great sounding snare at different tensions its like hearing three different snares but not. All three adjustments are very distinct yet maintains a warmness without the over ring many drums have. Great drum great price. Thanks I'm coming to a decision for a metal snare. Thanks
Wonderful drum. Does it sound exactly like a BB? No, but close... I think it's the lack of a spun shell and those tube lugs, but if you had those then it would be a BB. Not close to the new 8-lug BB, though. That's a special drum on it's own level. I agree with Nick. For half the cost this IS a killer drum.
Totally. If it sounded exactly like a BB, Ludwig would have watched BB sales plummet. The 8 lugs BBs are fantastic - so glad they brought them back for the 110th, and kept them around indefinitely! Appreciate the words and you checking out the vid, Cameron!
Much appreciated, @JeremyChildress ! Thank you for checking it out, watching the videos, and leaving a comment - I truely appreciate it🙏🏼🥁 What did you think of the Universal Black Brass snare?
@@NickCostaMusic thanks... I'll check them out. My reasoning for asking is that they look like AT2040 pod mics. When I was previously in the market for dynamic, directional, budget overheads, the service team at AT reccomended the AT2040 for overheads because they fit the specs. I chose a pair of Heil PR31BW instead, but often wondered what would've happened had I have chosen a pair of AT2040. So far the PR31BW have proven valuable as an all around mic. But theyre $265 each.... which adds up quickly.
Totally get it. I use a pair of blue hummingbirds for overheads and they sound fantastic. Found them used for under $250 for the pair. The ATM230s they sell in a 3 pack for $349. I’m happy with them - get a lot of positive remarks on the kit sounds too
I would guess to offer options for everyone. Some prefer a bit more direct sound that die cast will give, while others want it to sing the way triple flanged hoops will.
i would use a mic of better sonic clarity to the value same as guitarists showcasing 3 grand guitars through 100 quid interfaces, then youtubes compression, sonics are everything, music has value right, earth works and prism will take the game to the top, vids are one thing but audio is king in music, good vid though
I don’t know much about the black magic, but I’m sure this was made to replace it. Definitely has a better throw/butt plate, and snare wires are decent. They look and sound like the world max German wires - which are my favorite (AND cheap!)

How would you compare your Black Beauty with the Universal Black Brass?

Well said! Glad this vid helped you see what a great drum this is. Keep an eye both new and used, no doubt you’ll find one for a reasonable price
Just bought one of these. Can't wait! Thanks for the demo
Awesome, you're gonna love it! Appreciate you checking out the video - cheers.
Love it! Your kick sounds killer as well!
The beauty of @ludwigdrumshq ! What did you like most about the snare?
Appreciate the kind words about the kick, too!
@@NickCostaMusicIt looks great, but the versatility in the tuning was impressive!
For sure! For a drum at this price, you can't beat it - it can work with anything
You have the best taste in drum and cymbal sounds!
Appreciate that, thank you @af7119 ! If you ever have questions on any gear, send it my way - happy to help in anyway that I can!
I am saving for the 14x5.5 die cast hoops one and I cannot save fast enough
I'd love to hear that one - I bet it has a ton of bite with a shallower shell!

What did you think of the Universal Black Brass snare?
Very nice, maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas!
It would be a great gift! 🎁
Thanks Nick ,i just picked up same . How do you tune the reso side?
No problem, thank you for tuning in! Reso side I always tune table top tight for quick/snappy snare response
Hight tuning for me
This drum really brings some punch there, too. Direct yet a great crack to it.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the Universal and the Black Magic drums?
For me, this toy works well in high tuning only.
Love the sound of this drum in that tuning! Why did that tuning stick out to you?
I know that was an sm57 on snare during the drum recording, but was that a pod mic on snare during the commentary?
57 on top and bottom. During commentary, maybe it was the Tom mic you saw?
@@NickCostaMusic ahhh... yes! Now I see the optical illusion. I thought it was on your snare. It was definitely the tom.
What mic is it?
Toms have audio technica ATM230s. From what I read, they’re similar responses to md420s but in a smaller frame.
@@NickCostaMusic thanks... I'll check them out.

Any better than the BLACK MAGIC..?
Just the upgraded throw off/butt plate, and snare wires alone make it much better, IMO.
Are these seamless????
They're not - but still sound great!
WHY do some come with Die Cast and some with triple flanged ?????????????
I would guess to offer options for everyone. Some prefer a bit more direct sound that die cast will give, while others want it to sing the way triple flanged hoops will.
Medium low and then medium high for me.
Right on! Brings a little high end pop, but still has plenty of body. Appreciate the time you took to leave a comment🙏🏻🥁
@@NickCostaMusic I really want a black beauty but can’t justify the price. Might look into this as an alternative

Appreciate the feedback and recommendations - i’ll look into them ✌🏼
Didn't we just talk about this lol
YUP! And how you need one ASAP😉
You're not helping my snare drum addiction FRIEND 😂
So out of curiosity what's the big differences between this in the black magic?
@@handidrummer My understanding: Better strainer/butt plate and better snare wires. Might be other differences... others might know more.
