Excellent advice sir.
Another excellent guide! Thank you for your hard work!
My pleasure!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
My pleasure
Lots of money spent on repairs for problems that users cannot solve and acquire expert technicians (scarce). One major real-world problem. But the points you mentioned in the video are so well put together
Thanks
Good advice, Brian.👍
Thanks 👍
That why I assemble my own PC after making some research and buy all my own components for PC. Its not hard at all, so cost me less and I get much more. Its funny when
I asked where my PC from DELL, HP etc lol. And when I tell them I build my own they look
at me like I am from a moon or something lol.
The Dells, HP's ect... you mentioned are workstations and should be treated as such. I feel some of these products are a good value, simply by adding as much ram as possible, a new SSD and a graphics card that does not require any additional power connections besides what the PCIE slot already supplies. But then again you are spending additional money, that may be better invested in some other options. Thank you for an excellent video.
My first PC was an XT; I noticed that the seller knew even less about it than I did, so after that I always built my own PC. All that proprietary stuff is always extremely expensive.
I bought dell optiplex 9020 refurbished 4 years ago it was in good condition it is i3 4th gen with 8gb ram and 500gb hdd i am a casual user it is still working fine without any issues as it was on first day and i have installed linux mint on it 4 months ago and it is working fine
Hey Brian, got a optiplex 990, upgraded the ram to 12 GB from 8GB, GTX1050 low profile card, I5 - 2400 CPU, got it in an older PC's case, works fine and has for a few years now even after the swap. Do some gaming on it, I don't push it to it's limits in the settings as I've always been conservative with that sorta thing anyway.
Thanks for sharing
I wouldn’t underestimate that T1700. I’m doing an AM5 build out of one.
I am getting a second hand pc soon from my brother, since my laptop is all ready running windows 11, I am gonna stick linux on that pc and I will have access to computers running all 3 operating systems since I also use a 2017 imac as a file sharing setup where both my computers can access it, just deciding which distribution I want to use, debian 12 is nice, but ubuntu has a larger repository
you are right, but if you are looking for a RAM upgrade ONLY, these office systems are good...
Making sure it turns on is also important, atleast to me.
What other places where can buy used parts. Thanks
Dell does use proprietary parts on its PCs. There are some Dells that are designed for business not for gaming
I agree
For a non-gaiming W11 PC what would you recommend.
I've replaced the power supply and graphics cards with a couple of these Dells. The biggest challenge was hacking out the drive bays to get the bigger graphics card in.
Yeah, they don't make it easy on some of these systems.
@@MrSamadolfo Females can do it too, not just "guys". Your comment belongs somewhere back in the middle of last century.
I like to think of these as laptops with a bigger chassis and no displays, keyboards, speakers, mouse etc. because if you really think about it, that's what they are. Yes they have a desktop CPU, RAM, power supply and motherboard. But they are integrated like a laptop, and the cooling and power supply are just barely enough for what's already inside. So if you're going to buy one of these, expect to use it as it already is, and nothing more.
you need coffee lake or newer and ryzen equivalent or no chance in the long run with windows 11 but not everyone reads that.
I agree
If your goal is to save money on hardware, then buy less demanding games instead. There are plenty of indie games and older games that run fine on the integrated graphics of these old office PCs, or a cheap low end GPU that doesn't need much power
🙂 sure GOG has u covered, and its good to have a couple spare lightweight card on the shelf such as a 750that and a 1050thati and a 1650 and a 1630 and the new 3050 6gb
Like trying to turn an Austin Mini into a Ferrari!
I love dell .You're right. Just watch the specs. The power supply is the worst.
Yeah, catch people out
this one has a SFF power supply, which kinda makes sense, it reduces the number of parts to keep on hand at the factory
People will keep buying new PC with outdated hardware, its a problem for MS and PC Box makers as their market will shrink as people will not rush to get newer and newer windows upgrades because of cost of hardware to keep up with it, its not like you need a better car or real life necessities to live. Computers need to work yes but MS can't force its way on public to dance to its tune all the time.
These pc's are very good for office work these are designed for office these are not made for gaming
#11: Does the used PC have malware?
No, seriously, this is a real thing that Lenovo advocates to prevent you from getting used computers.
Good point.
First thing I do is reinstall the OS.
I am not gaming on these machines, so my problems are very limited.
Computer advances have come a long way since my 1st computer in 1979.
1979 ? Yes, before the internet.
Harddrive ? You mean a cassette player.
Yep, that 1979.
Lenovo is making wild claims about firmware tampering/malware to sell new PC's because it's in their financial best interest. While it's possible, it's not likely in most cases. but if you are that concerned, then buy new from a reputable manufacturer, and I'd steer clear of Lenovo to begin with.
It's too easy to literally rebuild most PC's from scratch for windows or for linux. The biggest downside is the licensing for Windows- you may want to grab the Windows Key from the system prior to wiping it; if you are loading linux on it instead, nothing to worry about.
Some manufacturers are more likely to install malware with new computer than most refurbers are... But if you don't trust the build, rebuild.
🙂 yes its very sad that these huge corporations are creating unecesary Ewaste, strange that theres no governments stepping in to curb this
Agreed. I would have thought the EU would be making noises about this.
@@paulwarner5395 🙂 rite, at minimum to maintain universal connectors and support for updated bioses for newer cpus, they should have to hold the same standards as any regular retail motherboard
Still some good computers to be had, but not really worth it now after windows 11 requirements
I will not buy anything less than a Core i5, 9th Gen for a used PC.
OEM sell computer s to stupid people who just want a cheap computer the last time I bought a a name brand OEM PC was more 30 years ago all OEM computer's especially apple complete crap
