Rats are too small to die from falling. Their terminal velocity and mass can't generate the kinetic energy required to do severe damage. Edit: I stand corrected. Apparently rats have poor aerodynamics and larger ones can in fact die from a significant enough fall. Mice should survive, and squirrels survive any fall as well. My error was assuming that since a rat was in between a mouse and squirrel in terms of size, it would enjoy the same benefits. I wasn't giving the squirrel's big bushy tail and ability to spread out and flatten its body enough credit for increasing drag and dampening the fall.
It's interesting (and saddening) that there seems to be an intrinsic link in the animal world between intelligence and a capacity for cruelty. Corvids, chimps, humans etc are all examples

Gotta love a good "Wild Kingdom" moment.
There are a lot of rabbits near my apartment. So many that you can't go 20 feet down the sidewalk without seeing one sitting off to the side. My dog is half dutch shepherd, half whippet. Walking her sucks because she keeps trying to lunge off the sidewalk and create Animal Kingdom moments. 🙄

I picked it up and the sun hit its feathers and the colours were fantastic. I was mesmerised , until the crow launched itself at my face. It pecked millimetres from my eye. I felt like I'd been punched in the face. It was definitely going for my eyes.
He finally figured out that he needed to keep his back to the drain as much as possible but the crow was still able to dart in close and grab his tail. The crow had a hight advantage that was helping him because I would bet they weigh almost the same. He looked beat up like you said and despaired towards the end. We are led to believe he got away

When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️
