- Laid-back and cool as a cucumber, KSTP radio DJ, Don DuChene, takes his Twin Cities listeners through the easygoing & breezy 4 o’clock hour of his 4:00pm - 8:00pm shift on this radio aircheck from Friday afternoon, December 2, 1966. Lots of news of the day, weather, sports updates, and songs from the great Middle-of-the-Road artists of 1966… including Dean Martin, the Baha Marimba Band, the Anita Kerr Singers, and Al Hirt, just to name a few. Highlights on this show also include a commercial for the 1966 Julie Andrews Firestone Christmas album (13:02), and an AAMCO Transmission Repair commercial featuring Zsa Zsa Gabor (17:17).
Don DuChene was a radio disc jockey in the Midwest U.S. from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. In the early-to-mid 1960s, Don had a popular show on KDWB (AM 630) in Minneapolis/ St. Paul, MN. In the Fall of 1965, his show moved to KSTP-AM 1500 where he worked through the end of the decade. Don wrapped up his Twin Cities radio career at KQRS in the early 1970s. The 1960s and early 1970s were a quickly evolving time for rock n roll and pop culture. These tapes are a peek into that time and the heyday of old-school American radio.

Don sure had a talent for radio, a very amiable and smooth-as-glass personality on the air! And the easy listening/MOR tunes of the era are a treat to listen to. :)

M.O.R. stations were once the dominant format. By the mid-late 70s, radio became so segmented that you rarely were exposed to other genres.

I remember these days of friendly easy going MOR radio. Radio was a easy going friendly companion. Like vaudeville, this kind of entertainment is gone forever.

This was from back in the days when a Top 10 MOR song hit had a very good chance of making the Hot 100's Top 20. Good music was respected and promoted, whatever the genre!
M.O.R. stations were unhampered by "format", So you got exposed to multiple genres. Today's radio is so segmented that you only get a slice of any particular genre, Not even the whole of ONE. Stations that claim that "We play anything.." don't. M.O.R. stations actually did. To bad it doesn't exist anymore.

The Mustang was NOT the original "of it's kind" the Plymouth Barracuda was first. And im a Chevy guy, and I know this piece of history. 🤔
Chevy Corvair even earlier. It created the market that the Mustang was released into.
@@michaelcrowley8339 True enough. Having been the owner of 2 Corvairs (Both generations!). But in this case I only meant the FE/RWD cars, As Plymouth did what Ford did but did it first. (take the platform of the compact and modify the body and make a sporty "new" model.) Chevrolet did not do this as the sporty Corvairs were sold as Corvairs and not a reskinned derivative packaged and billed as something totally different. They were ALWAYS Corvairs. Barracuda was a Valiant and the Mustang was a Falcon. YES, Chevy DID invent the concept of the afforable compact sporty car for the masses, (That the Barracuda and Mustang certainlly aped) the thing is is Chevy NEVER "denied" the "parentage" of the zoomier 'Vairs. (THE "working mans Porsche")
Al Hirt's cover version of the "Theme From 'Get Smart'" was better than the original version in the show's opening and closing credits.
MOR was great! We had it here in ABQ on our 50kW giant KOB.
KOB was a sister station to KSTP, and still is on television.
Thats right, both stations were Hubbard broadcasting. We had Johnny Morris on KOB TV who came from KSTP. Sadly he passed away a few years ago.
