Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

"It'll take 6 months, which means 8 at least, but probably 10"... I work construction so this is so true. It's stuff like this is why I really like Mike. He is like that wise old man people seek sage advice from.
It also speaks about Gus' management style where he listens to advice outside his own expertise.

Yeah being in high rise construction (I'm a Plumber) is funny like that. The builders say "We plan on having our first move-in's in January" and everyone laughs and says "You mean January 2026 right?". It's crazy how things get pushed back and get pushed back and then even further back. They say "We need to do this right away!" ends up not even being touched for like another 2-3 months. I've been in the trades over a decade never seen one project finish on time.

      @
"A wise king knows what he knows and what he doesn't."
Sure, Tywin may have been saying that to make Tommen his puppet but the sentiment is correct and it's hilariously averted in corporate management and in government. People are given positions based on their people skills rather than their knowledge of the position. So you'll have a team leader who has no idea how to do their team's jobs, a Minister of Defence who was never in the military, someone in charge of Agriculture who's never seen a farm let alone operated one and a CEO who doesn't know how to stock a printer with paper.
Gus is wise enough to deputise. Mike knows security, Lydia and Peter know the inner workings of a mega-corp, Gale and Walt knew chemistry... Sadly Gus didn't realise in time that Walt wouldn't stay in his corner.

It's a good thing Gus had Mike for this. Gus is a psychopath who can just wake up, eat breakfast, prep lunch, work for 14 hours, go home, eat dinner, go to bed, and do it all again tomorrow. Something like providing amenities is a serious blindspot for him. If he didn't have Mike, the entire crew would've rebelled and probably spilled the beans to law enforcement within a month.

    • @joec9693
      @joec9693 6 месяцев назад +372

I think that was an actual plot point in Breaking Bad. Gus knew the police were investigating him and so set it up to make it seem like all he did was go home and go to work. This made Hank even more suspicious because who only goes to work and home every single day with no other stops? No trips to the grocery store or the bank or one of a dozen different places a normal person needs to stop at once a week especially when they own a business.

You are on Point. Gus IS a Psychopath like all the others. And this behaviour of working sleeping working is what they do.
Sometimes they pretend to be social and stuff but when you Look close you realize that Something is off.
Walt went crazy but gonna be honest He had it in him all His life.
This is the actual scray thing about it. So many people are sociopaths and Psychopaths but thanks to good parenting, Education and good living standards they never get the chance to Fall out of place or be truely themself.
They are like homelander. Once you let them of the leash they Go nuts. Just like the whole cartel.

I mean, prisoners have to live with that for much longer and they don't get paid an obscene amount of money for the trouble. In fact many pay the prisons hundreds or even thousands of dollars just to have a few of the comforts Mike is setting up for the German team.
Though I've been told by a friend who went to prison that the most valuable things where visitations and calls from home. Which Gus obviously wouldn't allow. So I can understand why Werner did what he did. Even if it was the stupidest decision he could have possibly made.

It's not about having a heart. Mike is a pragmatist. Always has been. You keep the workers fed, entertained, and distracted because otherwise, they won't last 6 months of isolation. 6-10 months of being in the same place, in the same environment, and working with the same people is psychologically hard on the brain. They need distractions from this. Mike doesn't want these people performing a mutiny or escaping their warehouse. If you spend a bit on their quality of life, it will pay dividends later on. It is like office vacation days. They don't come from the goodness of the manager's heart. They are there to incentivise workers to stay and build PTO as well as motivate new potential employees to join the company

Fights would break out, some may go stir crazy and look to escape, etc. Mike knew they needed recreational distractions. It's not compassion so much as common sense and enlightened self-interest.

Showmakers understand, what companies don't. As Mike said, you don't just keep your working people alive, they need to be provided with a life of their own. Even when a lot of money is on the table, it doesn't keep you sane if you would be doing nothing but work for months on end without any fun and change between work hours.
I could easily see myself in such a closed community for a while, if I got everything needed to keep myself entertained. Although one crucial element might be missing - I love to go biking, long tours. But for a lucrative job, I think I could keep this down for a while. =)
