There’s some guys out there that make videos only bc they know they have to in order to stay relevant in the popularity of the sport. IDK if anyones mentioned this or not, but this reel also has a second, unadvertised technique that it works VERY VERY well for. Lews inadvertently created a really freakin decent BFS reel here. Load it with 6 lb or 8 lb backing and 10 or 15 lb braid and it will throw 1/16 oz lures pretty easy. I slapped one on a 7’2” medium light rod and it throws my ned rigs and drop shot easy.

    Now one can basically create this reel by installing a shallow spool in your reel. Shallow spools are available
    for most reels. I did it to my Abu Garcia MGX. The skipping modes are just painted markings on the dial.
    Just turn up the brakes past the half way point on any reel. it's the same thing. I like the reel and I have one. This is how I know.
    But internally there's nothing different than any other reel. Besides the obvious, the spool and the orange print...
    Great review!

    I know this comment is a little late, but I really want to pick up this reel for target casting frogs and pitchin jigs and Texas rigs. I was scared that when I saw that shallow spool, I wouldn’t be able to use it for multiple kinds of techniques, but now that I saw u cast it 30-40 yards, and still have line left, that really made my decision to pick up this reel. Once I can find it on sale, I will definitely be picking up this reel. Thanks so much for the review and tight lines!

    Great video, I’ve always put old braid has backing and then wrapped the braid with Teflon tape. Then put 50-60 yds of line. This reel would eliminate that!! I wonder if the spool could be swapped with other Lews reels? Maybe lews will sell those shallow spools for there other models. Then you could have any gear ratio.

    Im a bfs nut and this real does a great job of that. Im able to cast 1-2 grams good fishable distances. The spool is light and shallow and Lews by accident ended up making a pretty good bfs reel that I can buy in the states. I've enjoyed this reel!! Great video and don't hesitate to try this out throwing light stuff that you would normally throw on spinning equipment.

    This makes total sense to me. The line companies won't like it, but when it comes to bass fishing there's really no need to have more than 60yds of line. Most instances you won't cast that far, and a bass ain't going to burn drag like a redfish. I like the concept, bring it across the board in an array of gear ratios.

    I recently bought this reel and immediately increased the learning curve on skipping so after two days it is my go to for skipping. I only skipped with spinning gear and was pretty good but could never get consistent with a baitcaster until I tried this reel and after just two days, I am confident I can skip under docks or over hanging trees better than ever before. It is important to match this reel with the right rod with a tip that is compatible with this style of fishing.

  • @FishinwithGRAMPS

    Fished the reel out of my kayak on the very last day of warm weather before winter hit. Love everything about it and the video has been getting some good feedback. Andy responded to my comment on FB yesterday, saying he's got a rod coming out soon for it. Hearing you talking about not wanting all the backing, back 20 years ago when I was playing around in tournaments, some of us would tie the line on, then fill almost the whole spool with electric tape, to make the spool really shallow. When I saw this reel, I backordered on TW immediately, lol.

    Daiwa came out with SV spools a few years back. It looks like Lews has taken it a step further with an even shallower spool. I use the Daiwa SV spools for 95% of my fishing. Saves a ton of line throughout the year. I think Lews has a winner with that reel. They do need to offer it in lower gear ratios though. Because the shallow spool handles light crank baits so well.

    Just fill the reel full. Then make the cast distance you are comfortable with and then wrap electrical tape around the line on your reel and then reel that other line up. Same concept here without the specialized reel. And you keep the same gear ratio the reel is rated for with a full spool. If you want a lower gear ratio and aren't worried about casting distance then only fill your spool have full which just doesn't make sense to me.

    Talk about your settings when you use it fishing both skipping pitching and casting. I bought the reel for pitching mainly and some skipping under brushes but as a co angler I'd like to know if I can use it for other techniques as well to limit the rod I bring.

    • @AndrewUpshawFishing
      @AndrewUpshawFishing  3 года назад +1

      I don’t think it would truly limit what you use it for, I would actually prefer it as a Coangler. Any time you’re roll casting, skipping, pitching, flipping the reel will be dynamite. I’ll see what I can do with settings. One other thing I like is the ability to change line on the fly. As a co angler, changing line on the water (limited amount of rods to take) is a crucial way to expand the amount of things you can throw. Allows you to do that efficiently without wasting a ton of line

Small, compact design and super light reel with a 7.1:1 Gear Ratio. Its Model # is ROXLPHS-T with Winn grips on the handle. Rod has Winn grips too, Model # ROXCT70-6. It's a ROXANI NEXT GENERATION 7'

    Well, young brother from another mother, cuz, ole buddy, ole pal, do I have a deal for you ... an offer I can’t refuse lol. Since, I already love Lew’s reels and this is a brilliant idea by them and you have a shopping cart full of em, I would gladly help test one for you while you’re gallivanting from coast to coast making us proud. Hell, I’ll even test it on your old home lakes as I’m about to relocate to Six Mile, East Texas, America 🇺🇸 Just joshin’ ... kinda ... sorta ... maybe 🤔 😂

    Wondering if you can switch spool with another lews reel in gear ratio of your choice. Lews should offer shallow spools for their reels , anyway great content enjoyed it thank you

    I've been looking at some shallow spool reels and I'd use it for flippin or ultra lightweight lures

    I use 17-20 pound invizx it’s 20 to 25 bucks for 200 yards. That can get expensive quick.

    Is a good pitching reel?

  • @gurban1190
    @gurban1190 3 года назад

    This reel reminds of the kastking zephyr, very similar design and color scheme, the kastking reel is a bait finess reel, I wonder if you could use this reel for a similar application.

      @@AndrewUpshawFishing Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. Yes it's very interesting bait finess reels are a good alternative to spinning reels specially if you are more proficient with a baitcaster, you can basically use the same technics as a spinning reels, once again thank you for replying.

    Why do the manufacturers make the spools so deep anymore? 90% of the time we always spool like half the spool with mono as a backer anyways. It just seems to me that the least amount of knots between the spool and the lure the less points of failure.

    I own 2 of these corrections 3 of them left hand at 7.5 to 1 s and really unless you can cast 120 ft not much difference
