    Love it! I read Hogan’s book 40 years ago and read it again today. By chance I found your RUclips. Great stuff. Although Hogan had a very repeatable swing, the concept most important to me is to think of the club as a whip. By doing this all the fundamentals come together and you stop trying to manipulate the club head onto the ball, but in the direction of the target.

    Christo, I'm glad you talked about this because I forget this move, and it appears, in all the Hogan footage, that it is really important to his swing and weight shift (thus the foot dragging).

    I like the way his right arm is supinating as he starts the downswing. It looks like his right elbow and right hip are connected.

    You can't "drive" the knee forward with your weight on the lead foot but you can "drag" it. I prefer the feeling of tucking the rear knee behind the lead knee. Tucking the knee helps prevent early extension and promotes a nice finish.

    It’s a baseball swing. Grip the club with opposing forearms like you are wringing out a towel. This stabilizes the clubface and turns it into a baseball bat. Squaring the clubface is now effortless. Hogan’s first move by shifting laterally is mimicking the stepping motion that a baseball batter makes when he steps towards the pitcher. That is how he initiates the downswing. The next thought he has is to swing for the bleachers trying to hit a pitch that was thrown at his feet. He is tilting his upperbody to the right while his hips drag him through the hitting zone. There is NO rotation of the upper body, just the appearance of it. He is literally trying to dig the ball out of the dirt and that is how he shallows the club and has such a high finish.

    • @keastcw

      I really like the idea of "wringing out a towel" with your hands, but only as a way to promote connection between the upper arms are the chest. Remember that the more tension you have in your arms/hands the less speed you can generate. So before the takeaway remember to relax your hands. Jack Nicklaus preached this and it seemed to work out well for him.

    Hi Christo. Years ago Mike Austin made a video of him teaching his young student and told him: “ No; not like that; but feel as if you are kneeing a midget in the nuts” Shamefully as a senior golfer I laughed my head off and your video today reminded me of that.
    With the Pull/PushPull move of the fulcrum between my two hands using my trail knee as Mike Austin taught years ago give my swing a little more action and satisfaction. But I must remember that the knee action is a secondary reaction and not a primary action to the Pull/PushPull of the fulcrum between my two hands.
    Ha ha. Never was politically correct ; but I mean no offense to anyone in my warp sense of humor. Cheers ❤️😃⛳️👍🥂

    Hogan is not only rotating, but sliding his hips toward the target. Follow his belt buckle and legs from address to impact. His head remains stable, but his lower body is much closer to his target at impact.
    Here’s a technical explanation of what’s happening: His ball position starts just ahead of his belt buckle, but it’s way behind at impact. It’s like hitting a ball from the back of your stance. The tendency is to block it right with a draw. However, Hogan comes over the top on the way down to prevent a block to the right. Having the ball effectively behind his belt buckle at impact gives him more time before the arms both reach full extension and the hands rotate. We see that with every great player, as you’ve demonstrated so well on your channel. As a test, try to do the opposite - hang back on your right side at impact and don’t slide toward the ball. Your arms will reach full extension prior to impact, and your hands will be forced to flip the club face closed, which cannot produce a repeatable swing.

  • @Ericksonbellgolf
    @Ericksonbellgolf 2 года назад +3

    If you want to get Hogan's more early lateral move use a short quick toss in the backswing. It's not comfortable to start moving left with your lower body until you stop using force in the backswing, so you have to use a lot of force early and let momentum carry the club to the top. Try it and you will see. Backswing effort should be very high in the first foot back. It won't look fast which is why you can't see it. It's kind of like Bruce Lee's 2 inch punch where internal momentum is generated without a lot of external movement. I would say right about at minute 4.01 in this video when his club is parallel to the ground he has just stopped applying force into the backswing. At least that's what it looks like to me.

    • @countfloyd1269
      @countfloyd1269 2 года назад

      Pretty good observation, dynamic backswing done right can make the downswing almost automatic. Hogans swing is continuous which is why it's so pleasing to watch.

    • @Ericksonbellgolf
      @Ericksonbellgolf 2 года назад

      @@countfloyd1269 I agree. Getting that fluid look has a lot to do with applying most of the force very early and then at the last possible moment in the downswing. easier said then done of course. I also think Hogan probably added an element of leveraging in the backswing where the right hand pulls the resisting left hand into the cupped position. If you look at page 31 of 5 lessons and put yourself in the position shown at the bottom he seems to be suggesting that the grip involves pulling with middle two fingers of the right hand. You can't really achieve that position otherwise. The waggle is definitely achieved with that kind of force as well.

      Outstanding description of perhaps the most hidden aspect of a body friendly tensionless swing that is in sync with nature. And coincidentally reminds me of another Lee, the great David Lee (gravity golf). He calls it a "heave" and it's so friggin effective!

    Mike Maves of Secret in the Dirt talks about the rotation and force in the right foot turning into the ground. If you do it right and lift your left foot off the ground. You will spring somewhat quickly to the left. Almost is a running position.

    I know you know this but it seems worth pointing out. Driving your right knee and/or right side forward to the target correlates with the early pressure shift to the left side. Even though it may be hard to see the sequence on real time video you cannot really come forward with the right knee unless you are already on your left side. So even though this will probably done naturally with out thinking about it, it could help when you are trying to learn the movement to remind yourself," early pressure shift to the left then step forward or drive the right knee forward". So its a bam bam, left right dance step like move where you are moving left as the club is still going back and then as soon as you have pressure on your left foot you are pivoting your right side forward. I guess you "close the door" with your lower body then your upper body follows your lower body. ?? It also seems that there is a lot less emphasis getting your full pressure on your right side since you are moving left so early in the swing. So its more like a going from a 2 foot centered balance to a left foot balance. Or... even just setting up at address with 70% of your weight on your left foot ensuring very early pressure on your left foot so you can very easily bring your right knee forward.

  • @keastcw

    There's a huge difference in what Mr. Hogan is doing with his trail arm/elbow during his practice drill and his actual swing (3:13 and 4:04). The first scene is an example of how the lower body is supposed to work although many golfers also pickup on the manner in which he tucks his trail elbow in during the downswing. Notice how that advice causes the butt of the shaft to point well out beyond the ball/target line (merry-go-round). In his actual swing his arms "fall down" from the top (ferris wheel) pointing the butt towards the ball/target line. "Allowing" the hands to fall from the top requires that you remain patient and let the downswing develop from the ground up as Mr. Hogan prescribes. That pump drill and advice about tucking the elbow causes many people to spin their torso and shoulders around, putting the club on the wrong plane coming down, leading to predictably bad shots.

    Always seems to go back to how one can actively move their center of mass horizontally on the downswing without getting ahead of the ball (and not just spinning).

  • @anthonygallo8771
    @anthonygallo8771 Год назад

    We know the pressure (weight, center of mass, etc.) shifts to the front leg before the downswing starts. If the pressure isn’t on the back foot then the right knee driving forward can’t be the intention but a reaction to some other rotation/momentum/force. It looks like your trying to drive that knee forward by forcing it using the back leg.

    I don’t think the knee was his “secret “. It might have been his main thought. And yes keeping the knee flexed in the backswing to not sway is very important. It can make or break the swing , but his hand and arm action , uncocking and turning the left wrist down is also very important, his cup left wrist at the top too.

  • @Ericksonbellgolf

    I tried it. seems better to me to move the right hip down and lateral. seems like the knee move makes me rotate open too soon and in Hogan's swing it happens really late in the swing as an result of the lateral hip move.

    Well, the left side of his right knee moved towards the target, in the transition, that is for sure. But, it is worth noting that the whole of his right leg rotated to right; and, aligned with the angle of his right foot, in the backswing. And, this actually makes the left side of the right knee drive towards the target in the transition. This is something that the 'secret's in the dirt' guys touched upon; but, didn't quite grasp. Nothing to do with twisting the right foot to the right, in the backswing. And, unfortunately, the lesson Hogan gives in 5 lessons, on holding the position of the right leg, in the backswing, is duff advice. Probably where the phrase actually originates from.

    Try running the right knee at the ball without turning your hips. You can't. So what is it really.. I think it is the hip turn that allows the right knee to move towards the left one... so I think if you turn the hips properly, you don't have to worry about the knee. It will just happen naturally.

    "To throw the right knee AT the ball." This statement is not accurate enough. It looks like the knee is momentarily "thrown at the ball" but then slides in next to the left along the target line. This is my point, statements need to be precise and precisely understood. Which is why when you tried to "throw the right knee at the ball POSITION" it didn't work 6:52. So the words YOU CHOOSE are critical. Which is why YOU MUST start changing the way this thing is described.

      It appears to me as though Mr. Hogan is using his right leg for a split second to pop his weight to the left side. In doing so, his right leg becomes limp and drags into his left leg. Almost like a shirt sleeve fluttering in the wind. Maybe that’s the revelation - his right leg is simply along for the ride for most of his swing. Therefore the emphasis is twitching to the left side in an instant, leaving the right leg to follow loosely.

    • @truthlifefishing1730
      @truthlifefishing1730 2 года назад +1

      @@waveco1 I think that he drives both his legs, maybe pushes with the right and then as you say it drags along into position once its energy transfer is complete. I keep pounding Christo to get into the word accuracy of whatever is happening, because this whole thing is based on a misunderstanding. I also appreciate your input David.

      R Knee moving under L Knee is caused by final drop of his lifted L Heel and straightening of his left leg as he pivots on it. Try practice swing un-weighting ur L heel or even lifting it as Hogan did and then in down swing as soon as you drop it down the right leg/knee falls right in place with some gud force and intent. In fact the more you "stomp" down the more action u get with the right side/knee. The classic golfers did not hit the ground with their L heel as soon as most suspect as its done after the transition and before impact to get the momentum going in the right time and place. Nicklaus is great example he shifts but does not stomp early but rather late before that final action.

    Hogan’s swing always seemed a bit odd to me because he rotated his hips so much right off the top. But he did drop the hands, right elbow, and right shoulder down fast enough to keep up with his hips, as I see it. Me, I drop my right shoulder and right elbow and only then turn the hips with left side extension. I don’t find I can do it right the Hogan way. But in the end I’m pulling the club through from my left side.
    If I take away anything else from Hogan’s swing it would be his high finish with the hands - and so very many of the greatest had that. I get that (as opposed to a low left finish) when I stay bent over (good posture and side bend) through the hitting area.

Lot of great players rotates their hips around for the first move( bobby jones) then comes back to the ball on a slightly steeper plame buy well inside the target line, this is absolutely not ott, ott is coming across the ball from outside the ball/ target line. I do like his journey though just not his terminology. Hogan actually said if you keep your trail leg flexed through the swing you can't ott.
