  • This video is the third in the series of an extreme declutter, as part of a journey towards minimalism. Minimalism holds different meanings for people, and in this video you will see me konmari the kid's books, minimize the kid's clothes using The Minimal Mom's method, and donate a pile of homeschool goodies to a local teacher.
    My thought process during this journey has changed. It's not just about decluttering. I'm also examining my spending habits, budgeting, and clutter habits. Thank you for all the wonderful comments in this series, and for sharing your stories. Thank you for the advice and the tips. Thank you for supporting me through this!

    I went through this a few years ago. I was a 25 year buyer/hoarder of all things old - fabric, crockery, glasses, linen. Mainly from thrift stores/garage sales. I felt I was saving the beautiful but unwanted things of history. I'm a mad history buff. Eventually I had a stuffed house and extreme spender's guilt. But then I thought, some people spend $10 000 on an overseas holiday, and never feel remorse, just enjoy it. I spent about the same over a long period, enjoying the shopping, looking at all the beautiful things and finding bargains. Just like the overseas trip, I spent a lot of money on something, and it gave me a lot of joy, but now it's over. No need for guilt, just great memories, but time to let go and do other things. I hope this helps and you go girl!

    This series is so relateable and REAL. Thank you so much for being vulnerable and showing the hard work, Erica. This is very inspirational as well as helping me deal with my own guilt of getting rid of so many homeschool items - many of them never used! - from 21 years of homeschooling 5 children. I'm definitely a recovering homeschool hoarder and, with 2 kids still at home, it's an on-going battle of saying no to all the "wouldn't that be fun to use/educational" stuff that's out there that I know darn well I will never use when I'm honest with myself. Thank you!!!

    I love the bin sorting for the books! The visual and/or physical limit of a bin is a great way to keep the number of something we have to a more manageable amount. This is how we keep toys and books under control in our house.

    Wow, you are doing so much, so quickly. Those books! Wow, so many, but you didn't throw them away, you gave them to almost 30 children who will cherish these books and remember them for a lifetime. There were books I remember reading when I was in first and second grade. I cherish them so much that I got them for my own kids! I see these books on the net or in a book store and my heart swells with the memories of holding it my small hands, of taking my time to read each word and swim in the illustrations. I loved it! and still do. You are doing so much for so many children and also helping your own family. I have to do books and clothing as well. So much, too little time. I need more hours in the day. Looking forward to your next video. I wanted to tell you about something I read up from Konmari. She said somewhere, don't remember if it was her show or on article...1 in, 1 out. If you purchase a new bag or set of cups...go through your bags and donate/give away/toss a bag before you bring in a new one. If you want that set of coffee cups, toss out older ones so you can bring the new ones in. I've been doing this for about 6 months and it's helped so so so much. The cleaned out shelves look fantastic though, you're doing great!

    • @EricaLucasLoves
      @EricaLucasLoves  5 лет назад +1

      1 in, 1 out sounds so logical. Right now I’m doing 0 in and 1,000,000 out. 😂

      LOL I did something in January where I purchased a simple marble notebook and each page I used for one day. I recorded every single thing I purchased...even a stick of gum, and you'll be surprised how many things I added to my little hoarded mess haha But, you know, every day that passes, I learn and make better decisions. It's a learn as you go thing, and it's working. Albeit, slowly, but its still working. Glad to see your smile, you seem lighter and brighter with each passing video.

    I suggest a weekly or biweekly trip to public library with the children . They choose 3 books each and return them! My son makes this a fun excursion with his children every Friday after work. Sometimes in winter when days are short they get a movie and have movie night after supper, complete with popcorn!

    I absolutely love the pure joy on your face as you complete each step! Giving so much to your friend for her classroom was not only kind, but an affirmation that you are exactly where you need to be on your journey. One suggestion is to limit how much you put in a donate pile before you start a new pile. That way, you are not left with the chore of repackaging...or the temptation of removing items from donation as you repack.

    Great job. You may want to let the teacher friend check the other donate items. I know many teachers and school bus drivers who will see a child in need and help them (on the sly not in front of the other kids) coats , jackets , shoes, school supplies , books you name it. My daughters favorite teacher in 5th grade also ran his own library In the back of his classroom. It helped especially for some kids who didnt have the luxury of a parent to take them to a library for projects/homework. I made sure all my daughters books went right to him. I knew they were being used in a fantastic way and wouldn't make it to a dump until they were well worn/used. Good luck.

    You are doing great. Don't know if this has been written yet. Remember to look at how much you HAVE DONE and not so much as to what you haven't done. ...And as FlyLady Kat...of A Better Life with Kat (yt) when you do look at what you have to do just say "I SEE YOU AND I HAVE A PLAN FOR YOU!" Which is to DECLUTTER... donate, toss/recycle or keep... when that area is on your list. MOST IMPORTANTLY, KEEP REMINDING YOURSELF ALL YOU HAVE DONE!! As THE Flylady, Marla Celley herself says... "IT DIDN'T GET THAT WAY OVER NIGHT(OR IN ONE WEEK-END) IT ISN'T GOING TO GET DECLUTTERD IT THAT AMOUNT OF TIME" "even 10 -15 min at a time with make a difference...it will add up.

    Another place you can donate your stuff to is any churches that help poor families. Clothes and unused toiletries (if you have a stock of them) can be donated to them or local area foodshelves which will also help less fortunate families. (Check if your local area foodshelf accepts non food item donations first though :3)
    I donate all my old, but still decent, clothing to the local food shelf. The clothes never sit for more than a week or two before being grabbed by someone with more need.

    Erica, you are doing a fabulous job of decluttering all your items. I started my journey about 8 months ago. The very first thing I did was “shine my sink” from FlyLady...that’s what sparked me to get my house more minimal. From there I just tried to do something everyday and the feeling became addicting because less stuff was less stress. Then I found “The minimal mom”, Dawn has helped me realize that I don’t need as much as what I thought. I found a Faith in Action Facility needing donations from food to clothing to households items that gives me such pleasure because I know someone else can use the items I no longer need. Doing an awesome job, keep it up.

    I just Wanted let you know how inspiring I find your journey to minimizing, as a former homeschooling mother I found myself also to be a hoarder of homeschool supplies and always having what may be needed available to my two artistic daughters and now that my daughters are both 28 and 30 I am finding myself finally in a position to let go of the things. I held on for so long thinking they may need something Someday that I had saved for them, and now is both very independent very capable women I know longer need to hold onto the things that they grew out of 10 and 12 years ago. Your thought process has been very inspiring thank you for being open and real.

    • @julies9267
      @julies9267 5 лет назад

      Homeschool Happens of course there are hot spots! My girls' toys especially. Every so often we go through their toys, especially around Christmas and birthdays. My husband is not on board with minimalism at all, but he keeps his things picked up. He has a hard time letting go! I try and lead by example for my girls; show them that less is WAY better. Know that we are cheering for you! ❤️❤️

    Great job mama! I’m a homeschooling mama too so I commiserate with school supplies and books! 😉 For us we have to find a balance of what makes sense to save and what doesn’t (we have 4 kids ranging from 10yo to 17mo). With a lot of items- especially school/learning things- I kinda have a $20 threshold...can I replace ______ for under $20? If so, I usually purge it. And many times I find myself not wanting to purchase it again later! It’s very freeing. It also helps to be honest with yourself. Sometimes we like the idea of something, but not actually the something! And then if we don’t use that something, we feel guilty. It’s great to let it go and get rid of that guilt! Keep the momentum going- looking forward to your next video!

      You get it! The idea of something is different than the actual something on homeschool planning. lol Thanks for watching!!

    Your videos on working towards minimalism are so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to document your journey. You have achieved so much - when you started you looked so anxious and overwhelmed at times but now you look happier and as though a large burden has been lifted. Great rewards for such hard work. I also love Dawn The Minimal Mom am Darci Isabella for great inspiration - have you seen Darci's homeschool supplies (you might cry). 😊

    Hi Erica, YT brought me to your channel. Immediate new subscriber from the uk. You are immensely inspiring with your energy and honesty. I've been a "clutter-bucket" all my life but actually as an older person now have realised I'm a hoarder. The more I say it the more I have to own up to it and get things SORTED! 😊 slowly slowly bit by bit for me. But you are so fast. Its lovely also to see the improvement in you as well as your house. Loved your previous comment about amazon finding a new income stream. I think that about me too! I write in a budget book and highlighted various things in different colours. Amazon was pink......the pages of budget book was full of pink! Got that under control now ( ish!) Now for the "stuff"!
    Look forward to watching your journey inspiring me and many others to follow suit.

    Very motivational. Since you have more room now, maybe consider consolidating all the home school items to the basement. Or, keep everything in the dining room organizer and designate the basement as family area. It just seems it would be nice to have everything in one space.

    • @EricaLucasLoves
      @EricaLucasLoves  5 лет назад

      It really would be ideal. I think the basement playroom will become the homeschool space.

    In one of your previous videos you mentioned reading many books on minimalism and I have a suggestion for you (not that you don't have enough to do already, and doing a great job at it!), but you might want to look into a Sidetracked Home Executives(TM): From Pigpen to Paradise by Pam Young and Peggy Jones | Feb 1, 2001. FlyLady started because of this book and mentions them often (BTW, I don't follow FL, can't deal with her method). I loved that book and it started changing my life. I was always truly a minimalist, but it seems that whenever I live with someone (specially my sisters) I seem to end up accumulating STUFF. Along with the ones you already checked out, Sidetracked Home Executives gives good, practical advice.

    I just started to watch your videos today and it's amazing how similar with the kids things (and kitchen bowls -another video of yours) we both are. I have 7 children who are older than your children - 7 to 17 years old- and started this process 2 years ago. I first was forced to start it when we moved to a smaller home and then a year ago next month I started the Minimalist journey with intention and a want to change. I ended up getting rid of 60-70% of everything after getting rid of a lot the previous year. It feels very freeing and completely worth it. The most surprising thing is all the effort and joy I had buying all the things I thought my children would enjoy, they had no interest in! The books, the clothes, the workbooks- all of it. You're doing a great job!

    Hello 👋🏻 watching from Switzerland and really enjoying your sincerity and your motivation. I don’t have kids myself (just 2 cats) and I am a minimalist EXCEPT in my art room 😅 and seeing how good you are doing with getting rid of stuff and donating them to the right person makes me want to try and do a big declutter as well.
    Continue your great journey to downsizing 💪🏻

    My kids are now 17 and 21 years old. But I still have books of when they were younger. I noticed one of your favorite books is the Giving Tree. I love that book! I have it somewhere in my attic. Among the boxes of books. Even though my kids are much older, I still have piles of clothes, piles of paper and boxes fulled of stuff I need to purge. I started in the kitchen and I’m still not done. Every week I do a little here and there. But there is still clutter everywhere. Unfortunately I have to do it on my own. My kids are not up to helping me now. Or ever did when younger. They now are responsible for their own rooms. I used to clean and organize their rooms when they were younger. My daughter keeps her room well clean and organized. My son is younger so he is less organized. My husband does not help with anything. He hoards tools and unfinished remodoling projects materials. I’m a procrastinator and hoarder in some way. But I’m ready for a change. Thanks for the motivation.

    I dont fold my kids clothes. It helps me because they can put their clothes away without either of us feeling overwhelmed. Folding takes so much more time and effort in my opinion. I am happy to see real life decluttering, real life struggles. Not everyone can clean and have their house spotless in 20 minutes. You are very much down to earth.

    I doubt you know that there was a very long commercial before your video, over 5 mins and it had bleeped out language. I don’t care but I imagine your audience would not appreciate it. I watch the ads to contribute to your channel as a thanks for sharing as well as “liking”. One of the moms on another channel puts her children's clothes on a hanger . Pants shirt and a small zip pouch with underwear and socks . Every morning no need to be looking for things it's all there on a hanger she does this for all 7 outfits. As her children are of different ages she doesn't store any clothes, each bed has a change of bedding kept in the bottom draw in each bedroom. No more untidy closets you are doing great, what are you going to do with all the living space you will have once all the stuff has gone, it will be like walking into a new home.
