  • Description is in the title. Review below.
    I wanted to like this game, as on the face of it it seems right up my alley, while it has a lot of ambition and heart, unfortunately it is also very poorly designed.
    The combat is both easy and tedious, the action is undynamic, group fights are a mess and make up the majority, the save system is incompatible with the genre, the writing outside of cutscenes is verbose and dull, the exploration is unrewarding, the sidequests are unsatisfying, there is a lot of inventory management, the AI is trash, and worst of all the game has no respect for player time. Quests often make you bounce back from one corner of the world to the other with minimal interaction on either end besides listening to unuseful exposition or some token fight against ordinary bandits. All that without mentioning the jank or bugs.
    The counterfeiter quest is a fine example. Go to Sasau, talk to a guy who tells you to talk to a guy in Skalitz, who tells you to talk to a guy in Sasau, who tells you to talk to a guy in Ratay who tells you to talk to a guy in Sasau who tells you to whack three bandits in Skalitz, you then go back to Sasau where you are told to go back to Skalitz and whack three more bandits, you then go back to Sasau where you are told to go to Ratay.
    I think the dice minigame is the best part of it by a long shot. I really enjoyed the dice game.

    Hey, wadda ya mean "nobody will watch?" I watch everything you post to encourage you to keep going. I watched this even though I don't play video games at all. The beating on the cold iron is the most egregious error IMO. Looking forward to the next one.

      Yeah same, I try my best to make the algorithm go in Malcolm’s favour, which means clicking every thumbnail I see lol. But also, all of his videos are good and I like watching them because I love how he explains stuff

    There's really no need for the self-deprecating bit at the beginning, not every video you upload has to be a fantastic hour-long essay on the beaver wars. I think I speak for most of us here when I say that we really enjoy the varied nature of your channel. You're very good at sharing your insights and interests in a way that instantly makes me interested as well. It's infectious.

    Wow, I'm actually playing Kingdom Come right now. I watched your other smithy ratings too and I actually thought you would have give its due to this one :) Very informing to hear what a real smith says about the workspace. Also precious game in it's take on history.

    I was recommended to watch this video like 5 or 6 times already, somehow.
    RUclips knows my preference as I eventually watched and LIKED the video.
    I wonder, though, how this video has barely above 1000 views and uploaded barely 1 day ago.
    RUclips recommendations are wild.

    First of all, Henry's father is heavily implied to not be a swordsmith anymore and a retired mercenary to boot. For repairing axes and nails I think that forge is suitable.
    Secondly, it's also implied that Henry is pretty useless up to this point so it makes sense that his father did not set up his forge to be apprenticeable.
    Segmented tires were the norm back then I am pretty sure.
    Yes, the roof is terrible.
    And if you were to remove the supports of the chimney, it would collapse. It's definitely better than the previous open pit forge, I say.

    • @MalcolmPL
      @MalcolmPL  4 месяца назад +2

      He is clearly working regularly as a swordsmith as he has a barrel full of sword blades.
      The anvil has a sledgehammer adjacent, meaning that Henry is employed as a striker. As a sledgehammer is not a useful tool for an unassisted smith.
      The brickwork of the forge would have to be slightly different but real forges quite often have masonry chimneys that do not collapse.

    • @Nala15-Artist
      @Nala15-Artist 4 месяца назад +1

      @@MalcolmPL The dialogue in the game clearly tells us his disdain for weapons and their use, and as you said before, the assets from this forge were to be re-used all over the other forges in the game, they probably just did not put that much thought in it. And it also makes it pretty clear that Henry is a useless lout.
      This is a super-deluxe smithy for medieval times, that is for sure. This game is superbly researched by comparison with what came out during those days but it also is from 2018, I think we need to cut it some slack.

    • @MalcolmPL
      @MalcolmPL  4 месяца назад +1

      The detail assets from the smithy are usually not included in the other examples. Most have no tongs for instance. The sword barrel is not included by default, it is unusual by the standard set by the game. But sure, I'll accept the possibility that it was a careless oversight.
      This is not "super-deluxe" for medieval times. In the real world a generic one would usually have a solid roof and walls, a shabby one would at least a roof peak. The "super-deluxe" ones would be proper industrial centres incorporating a watermill to power the bellows, grinding wheels and water hammers.
      I don't need to cut the game any slack, pedantry is the whole point of this exercise. This one has got a lot of nice touches and a lot of careless choices.

    • @Nala15-Artist
      @Nala15-Artist 4 месяца назад

      @@MalcolmPL Sure, pedantry is the point, and nobody can require you to cut it slack, but I think it should be tempered by context.
      There is a nice video by Theodore Hinman on his reconstruction of what would constitute a small-time smithy, and an image search does show smaller smithies depicted in manuscripts, some even have to be "bellowed" with a hand-bellow.. Maybe Henry's "father"'s smithy (Martin, I believe, is his name) is not super-deluxe, but definitely deluxe for his needs (minus the roof). I am also thinking that maybe the roof is so full of holes because they figured they could get away with not having to make another model for after when Scalice gets destroyed.

    There's another smithy in Plague Tale: Requiem.
    Like with the first game, it's fantasy and a real mixed bag historically, but the environment models seem generally better than e.g. the costumes, which are all over the place.

    I am curious about what a given blacksmith in a given place and time would have actually had for sale. It seems like the middle ages developed more centralized and specialized industries over time. That runs counter to how blacksmiths are usually portrayed in media. So I'm wondering what the truth of blacksmithing was.
    I'd also watch the heck out of a tour of a properly set up forge and workshop.

    • @hydroxide5507
      @hydroxide5507 4 месяца назад +1

      village/small town or farm/ranch blacksmiths could do repairs and rework old tools that were brokem but still good enough to repair or turn into something else. also made small pieces of hardware like nails and hinges or other small simple tools. more specialized smithing did exist but that would be more common in larger settlements or a specific area/region might have the one blacksmith who would do EG axesmithing or any other specific type. in europe(rhis example from germany) there would be specific smiths for the sword blade, some would do just the guard and handle, some the scabbard, etc (this applying to high end knightly swords of course, simple footsoldier or serf revolt weapons would be beaten into shape out of simple materials into a simple but functional configuration. in japan some smiths would work om the blade, some would work on the tsuba(guard), one would make the scabbard, one would work on the small fittings like kashira and menuki etc etc.

    • @MalcolmPL
      @MalcolmPL  4 месяца назад +3

      It's going to vary depending on location and degree of specialization. A village blacksmith would likely do just about anything from horseshoes to nails to knives etc. His income is going to come primarily from his community, so he has to be flexible to meet most of the community's needs. Asking what he has for sale might be redundant, he might well not have anything reliably in stock as a large inventory isn't viable if you can't anticipate demand, rather he would just work on whatever commissions came his way.
      A city blacksmith is usually going to be more specialized, more people per kilometre means more smiths per kilometre, which allows for and requires a greater degree of specialization to stand out, which in turn allows for an inventory to be a more feasible prospect, if your income is based exclusively around nails or horseshoes, you can plan for future in a way that's impossible for a generalist.

    So, the game they ruined with excessive "realism" got the realism wrong. Figures. Buying this game a few years ago without watching some gameplay footage first was what taught me to watch gameplay footage before buying games.

    • @MalcolmPL
      @MalcolmPL  4 месяца назад

      While I think the game largely fails to live up to it's pretensions of realism, I also don't think it's tedium is related to it's attempts at realism, successful or otherwise. Rather I think the problem is the menial quest design, the verbose writing and the undynamic combat.
