    This isn't how the edit was on vinyl. There was a slow fade out when the bass solo starts. on the remastered cd they get rid of the edit and it smoothly joins on to part 2. All things said, I prefer the live version to the studio version. One of Chris and Alan's finest moments.

    Hope you guys are doing OK with Milton, JP.
    I always get strong Todd Rundgren's Utopia whenever I hear this (sans the lead bass stuff!) And yeah, as others have mentioned this is not how the original vinyl ended. But back in those days I was transferring all of my albums to 90 min cassette tapes because my car was where most of my music listening happened, and for this album I just made as clean a seam between the two sides as I could. Problem solved. Re: Yes' drummers, one of the main differences between Alan and Bill was their approach to the drum mix. Rather than tuning his drums below Chris' bass like Alan White did, Bill Bruford came up with his famous snare *plonk!* because he wanted it to cut through above the bass, and Chris was often playing even higher in the early days.

    Agree with ya 100%, buddy. It is almost blasphemy, that they edited "Ritual" into two chunks like that. Part 2 is the real highlight, btw. It's basically the Chris Squire/Alan White show for the first half. Then one of the most gorgeous, heavenly endings to any Yes epic, on par with the "Soon" section of "Gates of Delirium". Are you guys hunkered down for Milton? My prayers go out to you and your fellow Floridians, JP! Stay save.🙏

    😂 Like that you're now such a YESfan! The gift that keeps on giving. They were such a beast Live. I've seen a long list of the greatest artists ever from the 70s, 80s, 90's and still my most cherished, unforgettable & profound experiences are those by YES. AGAIN A TIME AND WORD was part of an amazing seamless MONTAGE sequence so totally unrelated to why they chose to split RITUAL in two!

    @richardcyrka6682 2 дня назад +1

    On vinyl records you can only have 22 minutes of record time per side.......this came out before CDs were available....that's why Ritual is in 2 parts.

  • @Bizzle65

    The vinyl edit was a lot more subtle and on Spotify it plays through the whole song.

  • @saurian11

    I know right! It doesn’t make sense! Zeppelin and other bands had their 23+ minute songs on one side and all together! But Yes were told No by Atlantic? Ridiculous! Back in the day, I was like “Crap! Now I have to get up and flip the album so I can hear the rest of the song! “ haha!

    • @TheReaperMan275
      @TheReaperMan275 2 дня назад

      But "Ritual" is 28+ minutes and you would lose a lot off the sound quality if they tried to cram the whole thing on a single side of vinyl.

      @@TheReaperMan275 LZ live “Dazed and Confused “ is 27 minutes long and they did it! Granted it was on their own Swan Song label. Genesis had a few studio albums that ran to about 24 minutes on each side in the early 80s.

      One could buy two albums and set side A on one and then set the other album on side B on that hook so when side A is done, side B will automatically drop and play side B right after. I have done that with several albums but not two of the same album. Just my two cents

      I bought the Japanese Import CD before it was released in America, and it’s split. But it was 1990 and I was just heavily getting into Yes. It was worth whatever I paid back then. I had one of my best acid trips listening to this song with two friends at concert level sound

    You should have done the whole song. I hate that record companies mess up the tracking on CDs. It wasn't necessary to break up a 28 minute song like they had to on the records and 8 track tapes.

    A lot of the live stuff I've heard from this period seems a bit rushed at times. Better than being way to slow in their later years, which Billy Sherwood (current bass player) has pushed to improve, although Steve has the final decision on everything. The Keys To Ascension Live tracks are amazing with this same line -up. Although getting up in age, they were at the top of their game live in the early 2000s.

    The split songs on albums is one of the reasons I bought a reel-to-reel deck in 1982 and moved all my albums over to reel. Probably not the smartest buy for a 19 year old trying to save money to pay for college, but life is choices you know? Also to deal with weird sound mixes I bought a nice 10-band stereo equalizer so I could remix the sound a bit. On thisnalbum I boosted all the low end and took a little off the high end as the cymbols and synths sounded too bright to me.

    The Yesshows vinyl version faded out at the end of part one of Ritual - on a tinkling electric piano part just before Chris Squire's bass solo, with no abrupt ending. The tinkling electric piano part fades in for part two with no abrupt beginning. The CD version has Ritual play through without being broken into two parts over two sides, and one of the reasons back in the day I welcomed CDs. Hearing all 28 minutes of Ritual play through as it was intended was, at least for me, a revelation. The two-part abrupt ending kind of ruins the atmosphere and feel of Ritual, which is a shame.

    • @charleswagner2984

    Hi, based on the abrupt ending of part one I assume you are listening to the CD cut of this album. On CD both parts flow seamlessly into another. The LP version had a fade out at the end of part one. Back in the day 29 minutes was too long for one side. Why they kept splitting Ritual into two parts for the CD version is strange, although you wouldn't notice it while listening to the CD.

  • @roygaiot8105

    The first album from Return to Forever came out the same year that Tales did. So who influenced who? With Ritual being 28 min long there was no way to put that on one side of a vinyl record. But the way they did it is just stupid. In this situation, I think, the best solution would have been to split it during an instrumental passage with fades out and in -- but rewinding it a bit for the fade-in. This was done to Tangerine Dream's Logos live album along with their Poland live album and they were fine - tho I think for one it was done when they were transitioning to another song.. This is where CDs were a welcome format addition.

    God knows why they've split the track up like this for streaming. On the original vinyl LP Ritual was indeed split over 2 sides, but with a slow fade out at the end of side 3, which was perfectly acceptable given the time constraints of vinyl, but would be unnecessary today.

    Is it really spit this abruptly on the vinyl? I used to have the LPs but I don’t remember it being cut in such a rough way. I kind of remember a slow fade out at the beginning of the instrumental section, but maybe I’m wrong. I do not have the LP anymore to check this…
