This new MoviePass plan sounds no different than Swagbucks or any of the countless other consumer polling/market research apps currently available. I do like having options. AMC was not my preferred theatre but they were first to market with their A-list post movie pass so that's where I went. I still prefer Regal but they were late to the game and pricier with fewer perks (like waived fees for booking online) that ultimately made their "unlimited" plan more expensive than A-list. Moviepass 2.0 might be a bit late to the game but perhaps it can find its footing in niche markets where smaller or non-chain theatres are the majority.
Like 5 years ago Samsung had the eye movement pause feature on every phone that you could turn on and off from the same pull down menu with rotation and wifi. The point was supposed to be for accessibility for people with mobility/dexterity issues or for when you want to make sure you don't miss plot points when your on the subway, maybe. I always turned mine off.
When I heard Tracking Eye Movement for ads, it first reminded me of the 1981 movie _Looker_ in which such eye-tracking technology is demonstrated for protagonist Albert Finney (what _Black Mirror_ episode title was the one to which _you_ referred? I'm not sure I saw that one)...
I'm one of the people who helped movie pass go out of business. I was a personal trainer. I had 3 hours between clients and a movie theater 10 minutes from the gym. I literally saw a movie a day for 6 months. Haha
RUclips does it to me EVERY time I play music on my phone ..plays 3 songs(less than 15 mins) they ask me 'hey are you still there?' but I watch 30mins to 1 hr channels & that doesn't happen
I thought about something about the eye tracking device that make sure you watch the ad… What happens if you got one or 2 lazy eyes, would it be considered as offensive that they can’t earn rewards because of a medical condition 🧐
The makes-you-watch-ads black mirror IRL feature is disgusting. Some of the credit stuff could work, it does for sites like audible only there a credit is always worth one book regardless of how new it is. But glad to see Spikes has had time to think about what movie pass could be in the new age. Also did he not get the don't dress like Steve Jobs / Elizabeth Holmes memo? Think it's cause he's rebought the company and sees himself as Jobs 2.0 when his NeXT company buy out brought him back to Apple. The difference is Spikes bought his way in.
Hey Dan, awesome video! Sorry about this, but small correction: Technically House Greyjoy's words are "We Do Not Sow." "What is dead may never die" is more of a general mantra spoken by followers of the Drowned God, most of whom reside on the Iron Islands. Sorry again, I swear my love-hate relationship with Game of Thrones will be the death of me! 😖
Look at the portion of the presentation that Dan is showing at 14:42. The presentation slide literally says “Ability to Choice”. Stupid mistakes like this in a significant presentation are unacceptable and make me even more skeptical of the “business”.
Nope. Their credibility with the public is irrevocably destroyed. Signing up for Movie Pass now is just asking for your money to be stolen. Also, why would theaters partner with them when theaters have their own subscription plans?
Honestly, this platform forces you to watch ads because you either have to watch a whole ad or enough to wait for the skip button. If you walk away or are doing something else, it will play another ad. There are many apps that access your camera phone and this would be another. Yes it is a little eery but that technology of tracking eye movement is already out there in the world.
I was actually a member of movie pass before they unleashed their insane doomed plan. Now I'm a member of Regal Unlimited, so I have no reason to even think about supporting the new movie pass shenanigans.
I’ve heard about the eye tracking technology for ads for a long time and always assumed it hasn’t been implemented because it would be EXTREMELY unpopular. In MoviePass’s case you would be agreeing to watch the ads for a direct reward of the free movie so it kind of makes sense.
Yeah I think Facebook was thinking about doing it to help fine tune what things to push to you by judging what posts you lingered on the longest and having AI determine the nature of the post. Kind of like what they have been doing by showing things that upset you politically bc it drives engagement but super-powered.
It feels like an inevitability for watching ads that give you something for free. Even as Dan was describing the service I thought to myself, so just put the ad on and leave the room. I guess they figured us out on that
The problem is, though, that it rules out the option of listening to the ad, without watching it. Like maybe you don't mind listening to some BMW special feature (as I figure that's how a lot of those tie ins would probably work) for the latest Bond movie while doing chores around the house, but having to sit and actively watch, that's another story.
@@Axterix13 Yeah but I imagine the idea is the ads will be sold at a far higher price than ads without verified attention to the people you are marketing to. I dont think audible or non-verified video ads would amount to enough credit for someone to get a movie ticket in a reasonable amount of time. I mean, people would plug in their headphones, leave em on the table and just keep spamming commercials without hearing a word.
The fact that this video got almost 2X the views the Movie Pass 2.0 livestream event got here on RUclips… yeah, it’s dead. Don’t let you phone watch you watching stuff!
The camera does not bother me at all to be honest. The passive tracking of information is what I have a problem with. An app that looks at my eyes when its open to give me back something tangible? No problem. Our phones using GPS metadata to see who is in our social circles and pushing ads to us based on what one of your friends looked up on their phones and came in contact with you recently is far creepier. This is one of the many things that people often attribute to the idea the phone is constantly recording audio in conversations. They didnt have to listen to the conversation, bc they know what all 5 people sitting at the bar have looked up, seen on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram; bought on Amazon etc. etc.. Its more information, less bandwidth & a cheaper cost to them. This opt-in verified attention is the only way they can charge enough for ads to make it worth it to the app user.
Im optimistic about this. You dont have to watch the ads if you dont want to. I definitely think it will drive more people to go to theaters. As long as the theaters participate ,that is.
If the stars align for Movie Pass 2.0, I’d consider it - without the ads watching me watch the ads. If they actually implement that, I’d probably avoid it altogether. Dan’s reservations are well-founded about that particular slippery slope
The main thing standing in the way of "watch ads to earn movie tickets" being viable is how many ads you'd need to watch. I'm a digital publisher, albeit not one who deals in video, but we do run video-based ads on our websites - so I have a bit of baseline knowledge to base assumptions off. I've also heard many YTers talk about their own ad CPMs that they get from YT many times. If advertisers were willing to pay $1 cpm, which isn't unreasonable at all, then that's $1 paid to MoviePass for every thousand ad views. So to keep it sustainable, that's the most they're paying out to users, too. What's a movie ticket in the US cost? $10? $15? On average? Let's go $10 - so that's 10,000 ads you need to watch in order to accrue that $10. Even if advertisers are paying $10 CPM, which would be far rarer, that'd be 1,000 ads you'd need to watch. Your bills from the optometrist for having to get your eyes checked due to staring at your phone screen a few inches from your face for ~16 hours a day alone would more than cancel out the benefits. Would be curious if someone can make this add up (without jumping to assuming insane CPMs - it's an entirely different prospect when someone's "watching" dozens of ads back to back, than sitting through one or two before content they actually want to see, so I don't buy the notion that CPMs would inherently rocket sky high merely due to cameras enforcing the presence of eyeballs), as I sure can't.
I wonder if Spikes knows how creepy he come off pushing this kind of invasive technology like that. This combined with Moviepass's awful history there's no way i could go anywhere near this stuff. Everything about this new Moviepass is just creepy and feels like a scam waiting to happen.

The legendary rivalry returns!!
I truly do not see how this service will actually be more attractive to movie-goers than the AMC and Regal unlimited plans.
"Fifteen Million Merits" - season 1,episode 2.
@@ProuvaireJean Thank you thank you...!
I'm one of the people who helped movie pass go out of business. I was a personal trainer. I had 3 hours between clients and a movie theater 10 minutes from the gym. I literally saw a movie a day for 6 months. Haha
We knew this video was coming and exactly what we hoped for.
I got it for 7.99 a month by buying annually and I lived a mile away from a Regal Cinema. I went every single day... moviepass was the best.
Why does Spikes have a mic on a mic?
It didn't work. So someone from the side gave him a mic to hold.
RUclips does it to me EVERY time I play music on my phone ..plays 3 songs(less than 15 mins) they ask me 'hey are you still there?' but I watch 30mins to 1 hr channels & that doesn't happen
I don't see AMC buying into this since they already have the Stubs program in place
I thought about something about the eye tracking device that make sure you watch the ad…
What happens if you got one or 2 lazy eyes, would it be considered as offensive that they can’t earn rewards because of a medical condition 🧐
heard the news and immediately thought of you 😂
Can you setup your phone in front of a picture of a face to "watch ads"
I immediately thought that!
Depends if it actually uses the camera or the ir sensor that face id uses. It's movie pass so it'll be poorly implemented either way
The makes-you-watch-ads black mirror IRL feature is disgusting.
ITS OPTIONAL YOU DO NOT have to watch the ads , that's what dan is not telling you
I’m from Saudi Arabia we don’t have movie pass obviously but you got me so addicted to it news
Hey Dan, awesome video! Sorry about this, but small correction:
Technically House Greyjoy's words are "We Do Not Sow."
"What is dead may never die" is more of a general mantra spoken by followers of the Drowned God, most of whom reside on the Iron Islands.
Sorry again, I swear my love-hate relationship with Game of Thrones will be the death of me! 😖
When I first saw MoviePass was in the news again I said, “I wonder what Dan thinks?” You did not disappoint.
Look at the portion of the presentation that Dan is showing at 14:42. The presentation slide literally says “Ability to Choice”. Stupid mistakes like this in a significant presentation are unacceptable and make me even more skeptical of the “business”.
The rivalry continues!
Wow. I was literally wondering about what happened to Moviepass yesterday.
Funny they have on their site now: The new service will feature all major theaters that accept major credit cards in the US.
Shots of Dan and Roth, face-to-face in the Screen Junkies studio...
...A simpler, happier time. 😢
I was actually a member of movie pass before they unleashed their insane doomed plan. Now I'm a member of Regal Unlimited, so I have no reason to even think about supporting the new movie pass shenanigans.
Blockchain: Red flag
Ads where the device forces you to watch as it tracks your eyes: Blazing Siren
Hard Pass
So serious question Dan… what would you do if RUclips decided to force eye tracking on all non-premium users?
As ludicrous as the eye-tracking ads seem, I wouldn't be surprised if RUclips started implementing it in the future
@@MoonstruckOnMovies dude its optional you don't have to watch the ads
So I think it's safe to say, Movie Pass is going to pull another Movie Pass and burn down overnight.
Thank you that's what I've been telling people the ads are optional
Movie Pass returns, thrusts people in to a Black Mirror episode…sounds about right!
If the stars align for Movie Pass 2.0, I’d consider it - without the ads watching me watch the ads. If they actually implement that, I’d probably avoid it altogether. Dan’s reservations are well-founded about that particular slippery slope
Dan reviews the MoviePass Reboot, does it capture the chaotic magic of the original?
MoviePass 2.0 Can be the AMC A-list for mid-size to independent theaters and should sell it as a “Hub for cinema lovers”.
why on earth would you give your service the name of a burned brand that angered all of it's customers in the end?
Will the director of barketing return
Yo this is crazy. I was just talking about this with my girlfriend and looked it up to see whatever happened to it and now it’s coming back.
Dan movie pass 2.0 coverage is great and all, but have you watched the 2004 movie SWADES? 😅
I can see this being Stubs A List for smaller theaters which I would love.
