Sonar, sometimes call Chirp or 2D view, is one of the most powerful tools that a Kokanee angler can use to locate fish. Using a combination of sonar, down imaging, and side imaging you can more quickly locate fish on the lake and determine their depth. It is also extremely useful for determining exactly what depth your downrigger is and locating the thermocline.

Hey Tyler, nice video
Amazing looking Kokanee. Big too
Thanks for the fishing report, my family is going this weekend to that little lake. Tradition of fishing there for the last 54 years.
I always learn something new watching your videos. Thank you
Thanks for the tip! Those are some nice size Kokanee!
Nice sized koks!!
Great info man. thanks
Love it. Thanks. I'm sure it's my settings, but I literally have never seen an arch on my lowrance sonar. I have to use down imaging and side imaging.
What frequency r u using on your sonar?
@@spiltmilt The only frequencies mine has is 200 kHz and CHIRP. I've tried both.
I love it. How can you tell the difference between trout and Kokes?
In this case it was easier because the trout were surface feeding whereas the Kokes were hanging a bit deeper but they are not distinguishable generally on sonar. Although I rarely see trout form dense schools
Do you want your presentation to be just above them or right where they're at when you see them on the fish finder?
Just above and through them both work but not below
@@spiltmilt thanks Tyler
I’d love to see this same video for salmon
How important is the ability to add maps?
For Kokanee less important but for other fish it can be very
so those schools of kokes on each side of side of the boat... will they leave the school and pursue your lure even if its' 15-20 feet away from them? Or do you literally have to drag your lure right through the school to get them interested?
They will come from far away. I’ve seen Kokanee come up 30-40’ to check out my downrigger ball
@@spiltmilt that's awesome! Im anxious to get the boat out and troll for some kokes this spring but the damn wind won't stop blowing here in Utah!
@@chubbrock659 It's the same here in Idaho. I'm glued to the weather every night to see if I can go fishing the next day. I went out the other day but it was like a desert - no bites or hits from anything. Two weeks ago though, I caught my limit three times over of rainbow (catch and release). Fun day other than I was targeting kokanee.
@@dallas1192 You should fish with your brother he will show you where they are.
@@dallas1192 me too, and mid week the weather is great, then the weekend comes around and the storms kick up. nice job on the catch a few weeks ago, Im hoping to be able to go this weekend.
Great video tyler; Some great table fare right there! What lb ball are you using, on your downriggers?
6 lb
Thanks this was very helpful. I just upgraded my fish finder after 30 years and was curious about the 3 different views and what to look for.
What would you look for if you were targeting perch instead? I know they are in the reservoirs I fish and recently I want to target them while I'm fishing. Mostly because I watched your catch and cook video and now I'm hungry for perch.
Is the side imaging and down imaging affected by interference? I am getting my new Helix 7 CHIRP MSI GPS G4 on friday. My little garmin striker just couldn’t resolve anything when on the autopilot.
Can you show us what suspended kokanees look like on side scan? How can you tell there depth?
These are suspended. You cannot as readily identify their depth from side imaging.
I have the helix 7 also . I'm still trying to figure it out and it's hard for me to find the thermocline water . I'm going to Anderson Ranch Friday . From Eagle , Idaho
No thermocline this time of year
Love your videos but they would be better if you shared which lake you’re on each time
If I omit the location...its for a reason. I would say I reveal the lake location far more often than most and the information I provide FOR FREE can be applied to your local fishery too.
What about squaw fish
What about them?
@@spiltmilt whats their image just like kokes
what transducer do you recommend using and mhz for deep water lake usage?
How deep?
@@spiltmilt we fish in bc lakes can be 500+ we are normally in 150 to 300 feet
Most fishfinder will have a dual spectrum transducer down to 83khz which is plenty for your needs.
I've heard that kokanee signals have an orange bladder because they have larger swim bladders and it makes the echo orange. Any thoughts on that?
The color on your fishfinder is just a setting function but I've not noticed that Kokanee show up better than trout or any other salmonid.
Do you have any recommendations for a beginner budget friendly fish finder and transuce?
The Garmin Striker 4 is the best budget fishfinder on the market amzn.to/3OJTdrQ
What is your settings? Trying to dial my helix 7 in and need some guidance!
Pretty much factory other than I turn up sensitivity to 12 to 15
Sorry off subject.
Howsy about video of a keeper sonar unit being towed or inside a RC boat compartment.
Don't know if modifications would be need for RC boat or not.
But from land or kayak being able to check out other underwater features depth could be valuable.
Ban the
Beans and wieners
No catch trophy dinner
Thanks
There are companies that make castable sonar. Not sure the whole rc would be worth the hassle
@@spiltmilt thanks for replying
Being able to run RC boat with castable sonar up a bank edge
Have less shadow to spook fish, may tell you at what depth fish are suspended. That'll give an idea what depth you need to be at before kayaking or casting to that area?
Hopefully I painted a better picture why I think RC boat with castable sonar behind would be an unfair advantage.
Thanks again
Are you using the included transducer on the Helix 7? If so, which transducer option did you pic from the setup? I don't have the same frequencies you show in the video. Or maybe you have a "mega" version of the 7?
I have the Mega version
@@spiltmilt Thank you, great vids too.
Hahaha...quit fishing so you can watch the Helix. Man do I want to have THAT problem...fish interrupting my fun.
Why don't you share what lake you are on?
Kinda an unwritten internet fishing rule to not blow up a tiny body of water. Very common for lakes and tributary fishing.
My goal is to educate people not blow up small bodies or water
Unless it's offered, don't ask.
