UPDATE FOR ALL NEW VIEWERS - If you notice an abrupt cut in the 3:18, it's because I had to remove a 1 min portion from the video in order to avoid copyright claim by Divo Movies on behalf of Hombale Films. I apologize for this and I hope that this will not ruin the entire experience for you. I hope that my intent to explain the great use of Sound Design in Kantara gets conveyed effectively despite the removal of a small 1 minute portion. Thanks for your support.
Excellent sound review...this video has a very long shelf-life. For an amateur cinema lover like me it gives a new perspective to cinema viewing experience. The success of this video is that it makes me want to revisit the movie with this new perspective. Excellent ❤️. now make video on sound design of Angaar, Satya and viraasat
@mehul bhatt ".... the success of this video is that it makes me (too!) want to revisit the movie with this new perspective" You have put it very aptly. 💯🤝👌
In fact British nomenclature for our kannada was Canaris. Ferdinand Kittel was the first lexicon of Kannada , who was based St Mangaluru. The 3rd syllable DA in the word kannada, seemed to have troubled their slang and hence they might have easied it to CANARIS.
Yes, no one in RUclips reviewed the actual reason why kantara gives us chills. The different sound effects and every scene has a new one. Especially the electric guiter makes it a 10000× times better . Every indian cinema doesn't acknowledge the terror, rock and hype that it creates . With the perfect woooooah and a terrific music which is not terrific is still terrific. The last climax which had a continuous beat was a great pitch too.
Many have reviewed Kantara about acting, climax, songs etc etc. This is the one video that focuses only on sound design. The way you dissected the sound design is awesome. Sound design is one such technical aspect which viewers neglect.
@Dhiraj bro I appreciate and now down to South Cinema for letting creativity and originality in cinema reclaim the glory but don't forget before 70's and even after 70s to some extent, Hindi cinema was also brilliant. Gangs of Wasseypur songs are an achievement in themselves if you don't know. Masaan, 36 Cahirangi Lane etc. Guru Dutt, Shyam Benegal and list could go on. And of course, Satyajit Ray is God of all, though in Bangla cinema.
Kāntāra wouldn't be what it is without the brilliant sound design. It actually educates the audience & elevates the scene to a scale where it's intended to. I hope this video reaches connoisseurs of great cinema . Thoroughly enjoyed this one!
Gaggara or the anklet sound is what we usually hear during kola, even the kola sound is not something new to mangalroreans but the other background score during the kambala or the night fight scene in the repair shop was also mind blowing, the daiva appearing again and again in his dreams with the sound "wow "sound will literally rip you apart. On the whole the background sound is the high light of this incredible film.
Musically literate audience enjoys it. WHEN IT COMES TO LEITMOTIF IN SOUND/music, THE CREDIT GOES TO THE 19th CENTURY's GERMAN COMPOSER RICHARD WAGNER. E.g., his LONGEST AND EPIC work RING CYCLES.
The Kundapura Folklore during Kambala chicken fight and Singara Siriye are so refreshing. Also the Karma song after Guruva is murdered. The music itself paints a picture of how helpless and emotionally vulnerable Shiva has gotten.
It is not just shiva. But also the transformation that Murli undergoes. He reflects in the hospital while the song is playing. Shiva’s attitude too changes
Another small highlight in the intro scene is when Shiva's father finishes applying the makeup and we get the first closeup of his face, and we hear the morsing and the electric guitar go symphonic. The climax scene is completely dominated by the score, and it's perfect (chef's kiss) great coverage brother 💯
Good work dude, nobody praised the sound design as much, maybe most of the movie watchers in India can't differentiate between background score and sound design, probably they are considering sound design inside background score itself and praise it as a whole. Waiting for you to breakdown of Ulidavaru Kandanthe's sound design. PS: Pronunciations were on point 👍
kantara's brilliance is in Sound Design and Cinematography.Even in RRR the sound design is on another level. For eg.Raju loading a gun.In Kantara in the last scene the Panjurli's scream was purposely increased to showcase the energy of that scream or the force of the scream hitting a person.
Fantastically done review. I saw the movie twice in the cinemas (would have seen more times, but Indian movies are hardly screened for more than a couple of weeks here), and absolutely love the movie more for it's music and the background score. Though I know nothing about the nuances of music, I certainly can appreciate good ones. I watch the movie on OTT almost every other day. The most interesting piece of BGM in the movie, (I am not sure whether it can be termed so, since it is mainly vocal) is the blood curdling cry of Guruva's spirit, when Shiva is in the cell. It simply has this astounding effect on me everytime I hear it, and gives me the chills. No amount of adjectives can really do justice to laud the music creator and his team. Simply out of this world experience.
Terrific research and explained with so much clarity. Kantara wouldn't have been a blockbuster, if the sound design wasn't this incredible. Looking forward to more such breakdown-videos from your channel. Liked and subbed.
There's this question as of why Shiva too disappears leaving his family and his village alone. While such questions being unanswered certainly adds to the beautiful mystique of the story, in my opinion, it's a bargain. Like Panjurli exchanges himself for land to be given to the villagers he protects, perhaps the demigods exact the performing artists as an offering for the protection and service they provide. As for Shiva and his father meeting at the end of the movie, I think it's way deeper than that. I might be wrong but Panjurli's cry is a bit deeper than Guliga's shriller cry. Perhaps after the scene in which Panjurli/Shiva acknowledges Murli and 'enjoys the united compan of the people' around him, in the ending along with the father son duo, it's the demigod duo too who acknowledge each other and disappear for the good of the people.
Shiva had died during the fight with landlord and his goons. He was brought back to life to avenge rhe landlord and restore the land back to people by Guliga as well as to procreate. After that, like you said Daiva takes him back into higher realms of the cosmic forces.
Shiva didn't disappear, he moved to Bangalore and took delivery job for Swiggy. It was an easy decision but off course with great regret that he should have done it way earlier. But then that is Shiva the demigod destined for Bangalore. And for Panjuruli, it chose to stay back in the village as it had a gut feeling that its not going to pan out quite well for it in Bangalore particularly if it has to stay in Lalbagh due to the trashy and dry crowd, it need a lot of shade and moisture to manifest well you know...

Beautiful, rarely I watch video twice ..but the way you have explained...is the same feeling you get while watching the movie..I watched the movie twice...like most of us...
I fully agree. Two things are important - first, the movie's splendor can only be experienced 8n a movie theater with a large screen. Second, the movie theater's projection and sound system. I saw the movie in 3 different theaters and found differences. Theaters 2 and 3 had very good sounds and the bgm was superb compared to Theater 1
Man, just goes on to say how this movie and the creativity has touched people that this kind of detailed reviews are given and are being watched by many ❤
Its one of those movies you can dive deep and explore it again and again and again and you find so many more things again and again. I was stunned what they created.
I am glad RUclips recommended this video to me. Until I watched this, I had no idea of the sound design & related technicalities. It's quite educational in an interesting way & my depth of experience watching Kantara just got much more elevated! Thank you for sharing such beautiful insights!!
Amazing insights into the creative depth of the sound design. I went to the cinema hall several times to see this film because I wanted to continue experiencing the grand sound at its finest but never imagined there is way more fine detailing to the overarching thunderous experience, wonderful research!
Yessss finally someone made this video. I too thought that the sound design was responsible for that Goosebump intro and presence of Deva and several other moments in the film. Thank you for the detailed video. ❤️
Excellent observations and analysis! I have always had a hard time paying attention to and remembering the sound details of movies, but with you replaying scenes, it's much easier for me to focus and remember. This makes me appreciate Kantara so much more than I already did, seeing how every single aspect of this film was considered by the people who worked so hard on it! 🙏
I was always looking forward to seeing a review focussed on the music score of the film. Everyone would just mention it with a casual reference that the BGM was mindblowing and stop at that. You have done it at last. And done it excellently. Ajneesh Loknath deserves to be acknowledged for his contribution in making the film a classic. If Rishab and the other actors have put in their best efforts, Ajneesh has put his heart and soul into the music score, no doubt about it. Each department has gone beyond the ordinary levels. Seems like they all had entered a different zone altogether. And this is why the film has become a classic. Of course, films being an audio-visual delight, the background score is bound to enhance the experience . Hollywood has always recognized this. "Titanic", " Star Wars", "The Pirates of the Caribbean" and scores of films would'nt be what they are but for their BGM. The Music Directors like Zimmerman are famous because of this. I have seen such movies multiple times just to listen to their contributions alone. One of my favourites is the movie,"Drive." And among the Indian movies, "Mouna Raagam." Many films for which Ilayaraja has composed ran purely because of his score. Rahman used to do it in his early films like, "Roja," and, "Thiruda Thiruda." But of late his music composing skill seems to have lost the magic touch. Well, it happens with all music composers, doesn't it?
Never had realised the efforts, design and significance of the music to suit the characters or for highlighting the scenario. But always felt mesmerized by the effect and outcome of such a great effort without relevance. Interesting and curious to learn more. Thanks for the enlightenment.🙏🙏👌
Wow ...after watching this review on the subject of Sound Design, I undoubtedly feel reassured that Indian Cinema has risen above "Bollywood"/"Kollywood" ...and other demeaning monikers that represented an era of trying to be something else when we knew all along that greatness and glory are always the throne sns crown bestowed to the OG of that subject and not a "Me Too" ..well done and God Speed to such technical reviewers
This much detail .. omg , even though film makers also don't know, how to explain.. amazing work bro .... Thanks a lot .. now i feel to watch again kantara movie in perspective of sound feel
This video is such a great tribute to the team of Kantara, especially the music director and the sound designer. Hats off to you for making this video which truly is a masterclass. You have chosen a very difficult topic and truly excelled in it. God bless you!
These instruments are extremely common in Tamil, Telugu, Tulu, Kannada and Malayalam cultures. We can see in every nook and corner villages of South :) We're used to it. You've just researched those and found them new :) Of course, with a point that many of good deep fans like us analyse - a movie is worth only half without good sound-experience, rather than only a picture/viewing experience on a mobile or a laptop/TV screen! :)
Someone should make some similar deconstruction on the dialogues..No idea if it's already done Wonderful punches everywhere..Especially the humorous ones.. Shaam ko biwi ko saath mein laana.. maza karenge..Innocent yet seems naughty LOL I somehow missed watching the movie in theatres.. It deserves to be kept in one theatre at least, forever, just like DDLJ had been kept for a long time..Maybe somewhere near Keradi
Very subtle observations. Excellent review of the music part of the movie which we normally tend to overlook. Potentially this music + superb cinematography and of course excellent direction by Rishab can push this music to Oscar finals and the final outbreak of guliga climax can give final thrust to even winning.
Wow great review. I always felt that this movie has used music and light to elevate the cinematic experience. Your review proves that beyond any doubt. Future students of movies can learn how to make a beautiful movie by taking this as example.
This is such a refreshing video from an Indian RUclipsr. I love watching these elaborate sound design and background score videos , been watching channels like inside the score and listening in. Glad that I could watch the same quality videos from an Indian RUclipsr.
I just finished watching and I’m so moved . I am not south Asian but completely enjoyed this film on so many levels. There were some Old ideas of courtship. But otherwise a great film.
- Background Score is non-diegetic sound. So the places where I have mentioned Diegetic Sound are actually Non-Diegetic. My apologies for this error 🙏 - A huge shoutout to @karnatakaanimesociety5009 for helping me with the pronunciation and @bhanudagarofficial for the dialogue-free footage. - Please watch the full video to understand all the details. - Despite practicing a lot, if you still spot any unintentional pronunciation errors in the video, I sincerely apologize for the same. Please correct me in the comments. - Since this video is demonetized, I request you to share it with your friends and family if you like the efforts put into this video. I truly appreciate your support to make this video reach as many people as possible (Update - after careful consideration, I was able to enable monetization on this video from 8th July 2023) - As always, Long Live Cinema :)
Going by your pronounciation, I thought you are Kannadiga. Dakshina Kannada/Karnataka, many have already commented. But a great video and I pleasently surprised by the sound design when villagers handover gun to Murali in climax. Had not noticed it. Thanks for the video.
@@nischayshetty4137 I have to demonetise a couple of videos that use film footage. I can turn on monetisation but the videos will anyway receive copyright claim and remain demonetised.
Truly long live cinema. I love these kind of analysis of movies which will make us the audience the appreciate and enjoy the efforts of the movie makers
instead of roasting and criticising a movie you are talking about the hidden sounds and creative things inside a movie that is a great work you are doing you are doing it in a great way I salute you.
I went to the theatre purely because of the sound design in the trailer. Then i went two more times because i loved shiva's character introduction in the theatre. Bidiyaaaa is eternal
Well analyzed . To get the true experience , one should have watched in theatres . I had watched on OTT first but watched on bigger screen later to realize that many sound effects were not prominent when you are on headphones
Very nice work my friend. I'm also a composer, and it always feels so nice when someone like you goes beyond the visuals and listens to the musical narrative crafted by the composer. Your effort in making this video is evident and truly remarkable. This video has got great educational value and your video will surely give an entirely new perspective to many while they watch their next film. Thanks so much for all your hard work, and keep posting such enriching videos, my friend.
7:40 Did you notice that before climbing up on the stage to fight with the judges for his rightful win, he takes off his footwear under the stage.. These little details show how despite looking like a lost cause, he still hasn't forgotten his core values..
I mean wow. The way you have explained it, I never thought a movie can be watched this way too. I know there is significance of sound in a movie but this gives a whole new perspective to watch movie or better say feel a movie. 👌🔥👏👏
Love the review. I was thinking about the brilliance of the background sound engineering as well, specifically as you pointed out the sound when the Deva possesses the villagers. Powerful! Did I also hear tibetian monks chant or something like the deep mongolian throat chat in a few of the scenes?
To answer your question at the beginning, yes, this review was necessary. Very much so. Most others have talked about the cerebral aspects of Kantara while giving little to no importance to its visceral aspects like that "WAAOO" cry or BGM, facial painting and expressions within it... I believe the they were far more critical in its tremendous success. Great job✌️
The little things that go into making a good movie. Had not realised this until I saw this video. I shall watch Kantara again keeping this in mind. This time around, it's going to be a purely scientific approach to appreciate the details. Thank you for posting your video review.
I was amazed with the sound design and i can say that i was just waiting for Shiva's transformation to hear the sound again. For me sound design was the primary reason to be honest. I really loved ur explanation on SD.
Yes, i noticed. Prime video one sounds bit like arabic music. Original had one catchy music sampling which sounded slightly like small portion of one old Punjabi song I don't remember.
Somehow all the things you said that make this film, in ordinary audience's mind, a great film-but intuitively. Normal audience may say the film is great but when asked why, they won't be necessarily be able to explain this in detail, one of the factors which you have explored beautifully in this video, among other great traits. Kantara is a creative masterpiece, something on line of Chris Nolan's work in hollywood.
Beautifully explained and your effort has added new meaning for me. I watched the movie again just to experience the magic of the music as explained in your video. Thank you for your analysis.
Man, what a review and whole lot of new perapective for a layman patron of the movie. Honestly listening to the research, it motivated me to watch the movie again with music as a perspective in mind. Excellent work. Keep it up Sir.
Very subtle observation and understanding. Music and sound has deep impact in our consciousness. This is purely grace that you catches this thing. Congratulations
Excellent review.. this movie was made special with lots of effort.. you made us realise a small (but very important) part of that experience, very effectively..

Beautiful, rarely I watch video twice ..but the way you have explained...is the same feeling you get while watching the movie..I watched the movie twice...like most of us...
I have not yet awakened to the wisdom of Indian culture but this film and the way it is described is wonderful.
Kantara is a gem that we all know but where were you??
How can I miss sach a wonderful and elaborated music explanation.
A big cheers to your efforts.
Really we need to appreciate you as well. Superb information 👌 👏👏👏
As a film maker myself youve hit the ail on the head top review . properly explained and beautifully conveyed well done !
This analysis is so good. While watching the movie, the effect on audience was exactly as explained here.
Finally a video dedeicated to the masterpiece sound design. The sound design elevated the cinema experiece by x100.
Mouna ragam is soo good 😊 I’ve relistened that album many times
Zimmerman?
Never had realised the efforts, design and significance of the music to suit the characters or for highlighting the scenario. But always felt mesmerized by the effect and outcome of such a great effort without relevance. Interesting and curious to learn more. Thanks for the enlightenment.🙏🙏👌
Wow ...after watching this review on the subject of Sound Design, I undoubtedly feel reassured that Indian Cinema has risen above "Bollywood"/"Kollywood" ...and other demeaning monikers that represented an era of trying to be something else when we knew all along that greatness and glory are always the throne sns crown bestowed to the OG of that subject and not a "Me Too"
..well done and God Speed to such technical reviewers
That's true. Being a North Indian, these instruments were a discovery for me.
Bro we are not interested in sound we are only interested in plot and acting

I'm so glad someone recognised the musical prowess of the movie and gave the apt recognition in detail that it so rightly deserves
Someone should make some similar deconstruction on the dialogues..No idea if it's already done
Wonderful punches everywhere..Especially the humorous ones..
Shaam ko biwi ko saath mein laana.. maza karenge..Innocent yet seems naughty LOL
I somehow missed watching the movie in theatres..
It deserves to be kept in one theatre at least, forever, just like DDLJ had been kept for a long time..Maybe somewhere near Keradi
If Kantara ever goes to some international awards, that it should, Kantara team should hire you to make their presentation.
Very subtle observations.
Excellent review of the music part of the movie which we normally tend to overlook.
Potentially this music + superb cinematography and of course excellent direction by Rishab can push this music to Oscar finals and the final outbreak of guliga climax can give final thrust to even winning.
What brilliant explanation. Totally digs into every minute of the movie. Hands off to the amazing info and mighty curation.
It's amazing how you have acknowledged minute details which escapes while watching the movie in a flow, great review 👌🏼
Just trying my best. Thanks for watching :)
What a precise explanation of Sound and Music.... Appreciation to the film maker and this RUclips video maker both did a fabulous job.
This channel is incredibly underrated! I hope that your sub count exploded. Love from Karnataka.
My goodness, you've literally crafted the words...your hardwork is being seen throughout the review....loved it ❤️❤️❤️
The climax music hunted me for couple of days your analysis is superb helped me understand different dimensions thanks
Sound design and how it can elevate emotions, characters, and narrative of the film. Never thought about it
This review is pivotal to appreciate cinema from the sound design perspective. Thanks a million! 🙏
One of the best sound design and background score ever
I just finished watching and I’m so moved . I am not south Asian but completely enjoyed this film on so many levels. There were some Old ideas of courtship. But otherwise a great film.
2 years of consistent hardwork. Finally pay off📴 .....keep shining brother... finally you get recognition....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
As a sound designer, I really appreciated this. Good job 👍🏼
- Background Score is non-diegetic sound. So the places where I have mentioned Diegetic Sound are actually Non-Diegetic. My apologies for this error 🙏
- A huge shoutout to @karnatakaanimesociety5009 for helping me with the pronunciation and @bhanudagarofficial for the dialogue-free footage.
I truly appreciate your support to make this video reach as many people as possible (Update - after careful consideration, I was able to enable monetization on this video from 8th July 2023)
- As always, Long Live Cinema :)
appreciate ur effort
Going by your pronounciation, I thought you are Kannadiga. Dakshina Kannada/Karnataka, many have already commented. But a great video and I pleasently surprised by the sound design when villagers handover gun to Murali in climax. Had not noticed it. Thanks for the video.
Wait why is this channel demonetised?
@@nischayshetty4137 I have to demonetise a couple of videos that use film footage. I can turn on monetisation but the videos will anyway receive copyright claim and remain demonetised.
Appreciate 👏👏 will definitely share
Truly long live cinema. I love these kind of analysis of movies which will make us the audience the appreciate and enjoy the efforts of the movie makers
South Indian Cinema has kept the भारतीयता alive. Hats off to them.
instead of roasting and criticising a movie you are talking about the hidden sounds and creative things inside a movie that is a great work you are doing you are doing it in a great way I salute you.
When everything is perfect then it is worth winning Oscars for sure
I have never ever seen such a deep analysis of a BGM , which obviously I liked it amazingly...!!! Awesome work
Finally here’s some maturity with the way we appreciate movies. The technical sonos diseconomy is quite wonderful and informative.
Indeed!
Absolutely killer sound review.. already liked and subscribed👍 we would like see more such kind of reviews from you
Very nice work my friend.
That’s a great observation! Thanks a lot for sharing
I mean wow. The way you have explained it, I never thought a movie can be watched this way too. I know there is significance of sound in a movie but this gives a whole new perspective to watch movie or better say feel a movie. 👌🔥👏👏
Maybe music director and director themselves didn't dwell so deep.. Great job 👍
What the hell man. Now I understand the importance of background track. Mind blowing. More power to you 😊
Love the review.
Great job✌️
Great observation bro👌
The little things that go into making a good movie. Had not realised this until I saw this video. I shall watch Kantara again keeping this in mind. This time around, it's going to be a purely scientific approach to appreciate the details.
Thank you for posting your video review.
I was amazed with the sound design and i can say that i was just waiting for Shiva's transformation to hear the sound again. For me sound design was the primary reason to be honest.
I really loved ur explanation on SD.
Never saw or heard anything like this. Making a video on such topic is brilliant work
Rain fight bgm has been changed in the prime version.
Yes, i noticed. Prime video one sounds bit like arabic music. Original had one catchy music sampling which sounded slightly like small portion of one old Punjabi song I don't remember.
@@dhanrajshetty5161 original is back I guess.
I think the correct phrase is " Dakshina Kannada " not " Dakshina Karnataka "...
Wow such a beautiful analysis and such an in depth research. Beautiful mate.
The exact thing that i felt about this movie..Sound Design is soul for this movie.. Thanks for the detailed video..
Pure Kattar Indian Movie. Praise to the makers and those who get their points in every seconds of this divine experience.
Very subtle observation and understanding. Music and sound has deep impact in our consciousness. This is purely grace that you catches this thing. Congratulations
Yaar guru ninu
Am bewildered by your meticulousness 🙏🙏❤
Excellent review.. this movie was made special with lots of effort.. you made us realise a small (but very important) part of that experience, very effectively..
Although there's so much to say; but I believe you can understand this 'You have done it so perfectly!' like Kantara. 💯
You brought the nuances of Digital Design to the fore..great research and presentation..keep us enlightened
Wow what Beautiful detailed explanation we just loved it
Particular instrument you are mentioning it as dedeju is locally called as Kombu
