      @@WintryRPG I just love the idea of the Path of the Beast Barbarian, it's so customizable. I have so many PC ideas for this subclass that if I were to play them all, they'd all still feel different.
      If Plasmoids become playable, I'd run it as it's Form of the Beast would be the bones of animals it ate that hadn't dissolved yet (use a skull for a bite attack, ribs to make claws, etc.)
      Hexblood - you were an experiment of a Hag working on Troll Regeneration. Performs a heart transplant on your PC and implants a troll heart, but due to a lack of "development", discards your PC as a failed experiment...only when your PC goes into a Rage, it awakens the Troll Heart and it activates Troll like mutations (which they are know for) and can go into levels of body horror by growing extra limbs for the claw attack, the trolls head grows out of your shoulder and now you get to RP your PC's horror and interactions as they level up. Maybe make the Troll look like a mass/tumor out of combat where it talks to the PC.
      I got a ton of them but now pseudo Owlbear it towards the top of my list. Apologies for the long ramble. Great video as always and can't wait to see what you work on next. Hope you have a blessed day!

    One thing to consider with the Owlin is that while out of the gate "equal to walking speed" sounds worse than "50 feet", it's also much easier to crank your flying speed up to ridiculous extents if you want to. The vast majority of speed-increasing effects in the game affect either any and all of your speeds, or only your walking speed, meaning that while Aarakocra's flight can't benefit from the latter, an Owlin's can. This opens up a wide range of additional options, a notable example being Boots of Speed, to the extent that I've always personally considered "equal to walking speed" much stronger than an explicit speed; you start at a lower base point and it's easy to stay there, but you also have far more avenues by which you can exceed what would be possible with an explicit speed if you choose to go that route.

    • @aprinnyonbreak1290
      @aprinnyonbreak1290 2 года назад +1

      I mean, plus, for the purposes that make innate flight busted, any flight speed of at least 15 is pretty much sufficient. Enough to get out of reach or jump range. More than that only starts to matter when flight is more of a universal mechanic.

      @@lordilluminati5836 I'd actually disagree with that. Non-magical flight wouldn't necessarily carry fall risks for the flyer any more than simply walking would carry trip risks. Limiting flight, the way Starfinder does, may be a better way of balancing non-magical flight: You can't fly straight up, instead you ascend at an angle, flying up costs more movement, and hovering requires a check

I personally despise this race, since it's really plain, literally being an arracrockra with a flightspeed tradeoff for stealth options. Hell, you don't even get stat differences to distinguish races now, so it's literally just that mechanically. Realistically, in the vast majority of campaigns, the only difference between the the two races in how they're treated is that the arrarcrokca will actually get MORE chances to have their backgrounds come into play occasionally, while the owlin only gets "does he eat rodents" jokes because there's like no lore for them to work with!

    For the Owlin I would suggest the average member of their race receive +1 Dexterity +2 Intelligence or Wisdom. They are more Sages and Scholars than combatants so their mental scores would defiantly be higher than the physical ones.
    I approve of the lower Flying Speed since they can fly silently since they are also Proficient in Stealth as well, not the most graceful of flyers but they can swoop down on a target silently if needed.

Lots of hiding as my bonus action while zipping around at a comfortable height and staying out of melee whenever possible.

    120 ft dark vision, medium size, and free stealth proficiency is a lot of value on a character with +3 ASI. Having flight on top that puts them way over the top. The difference between 30 ft and 50 ft flying speed is often inconsequential considering that 75% of the monsters in DND do not have a ranged attack. All you really need to do is get off the ground in most cases.
    I really like the idea of an owlin PC as a player. I think owls are adorable and quirky and yet fierce, which is a great starting point for an adventurer. But I would have to ban all flying races if I were DMing a module. I mostly do homebrews, and I homebrew almost all monsters to have some sort of ranged attack option. This does a pretty good job of balancing flying races and also things like polearm master/sentinel shenanigans into balance. But I do have to question if WotC understands their own game with the introduction of another flying race and the spell silvery barbs with this book.

    I love the birds, and owls especially, I just find little to do with this race, Granted I stick to races that have unique gameplay like Kobolds, Hobgoblins, and Goblins. This dose feel like alot of "That's nice" rather than something build defining.
    Side note: any player wanting to play this race know that the size pick is most likely coming from the fact that most owl species have a huge size difference between males and females, with female nest sentinels towering in size and mass over the more faster hunting males.

      As for size, you can pick small, and ride on your party members, cower your arms with wings, and you're just a large owl-familiar. I’m new to dnd so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but I think I see a way that an owlins flight speed beats an aarakocras.
    Basically an aarakocras has a flight speed 50ft regardless of movement speed but since an owlins flight speed is equal to its movement speed, if you were to take a class like monk you could increase the flight speed all the way up to 60ft or even 70ft if you take the mobile feat as well.

    • @WintryRPG
      @WintryRPG  Год назад

      sort of correct! Mobile and Unarmored Movement (Monk) increase 'Speed' in general, so it would also improve Aarakocra's flying speed. Movement bonuses that uniquely improve walking speed (which are rarer) would improve an owlin's fly speed as well.

      I mean, it was pretty OP. To make a fair comparison, I just take the Aarakocra. Aarakocras only Race gimmick was its flight cause lets be real, who cares about the talons. In that regard, the "Owlfolk" was just simply Aarakocra+ it got the fly mechanic and, free unlimited detect magic and *Darkvision* and a fucking good one at that. Just comparing the 2 Birds, the Aarakocra has flight and the Owlfolk just had more. I believe that's called power creep. Not saying other races are not busted, but in a mechanical view it was just bad. That same problem still persists with these changes they are just the better Bird (Btw. Melee's being the only ones benefiting from the fly speed of Aaracokra can not really make Strength builds, so thats that.) No hate by the way. Just my observation. No harsh feelings. ^^ I think the problem is more that Aarakocra is just bad now that I think about it xD

    I love the callout to the hsiao, but the owlin and the hsiao are decidedly different. About the only thing they have in common is being owls.
    I would've liked to see the Darkvision trimmed from 90 to 60 feet instead of buffed to 120, because as you said, this makes them the only race to get Superior Darkvision with no drawbacks. That is probably my biggest point of contention with the changes from UA to print. I was okay that they nixed the in-flight reaction because that's just something that all flying PCs should be able to do, and they could've made it _detect magic_ 1/long rest instead of at-will-but-ritual-only if people were really bugging about the power.
    You could literally stick the in-book traits on any genetic birdperson and I'd believe it. Nothing about this makes them special in the right way, and it's saddening.

  • @GreatestRedPanda
    @GreatestRedPanda 2 года назад

    A lot of valid complaints in the comments, but I feel like rather than outright nerfing flight because its OP, they should stop giving flying races arms AND wings, and simply let players work around the complications of having arms that are also wings. It really makes no sense that their flight speed is identical to the basic movement speed of every terrestrial race in the game. You would be the slowest flying creature in existence. Flying is supposed to be fast, and this limitation is clownish and unrealistic in the extreme. Make them fast, make them mobile, and make them figure out how difficult it is to cast a spell or fire a bow when your arms are 100% dedicated to stopping you from becoming a messy smear on the ground. The only redeeming thing they did was limit flight to light armour, though I feel some nuance could have been squeezed in there as well.

    Is it just me or have the last few races WotC released feel very meh. I remember thinking when the gothic lineages came out that WotC really nailed it. Some weren't the best but they still oozed flavor and cool mechanics. Dhampir being able to walk on walls and get a cool natural weapon that could give bonuses to rolls or heal them. The Hexblood getting the ability to choose what stat they used to cast spells, AND if they were a spell caster they could cast said spells with their spell slots (also they could rip off parts of themselves to talk to others and spy on people). But the newest races feel so bland. Not bad, just bland. Like if I play them I'm not going to feel underpowered, but not getting any ribbon abilitys or page of new lore makes it feel like im just choosing a stat block with some fluff and not a fleshed out race. I'm definitely not going to feel inspired to use my abilities as creatively as some of the other races and lineages. But I don't know, maybe that's just me.

No lore, no flavor, no culture, the only thing they have going for them lore wise is a pun. Maybe if they leaned into that 2E owl lore it could be something interesting, but as it is, the only reason for its inclusion is to serve as a Harry Potter reference in a book that's nothing but a big Harry Potter reference.

    I HATE that the Aarocockra only live 30 years, that's so mean (and potentially creepy; if a 4 year old character is romantic/sexual with a MUCH older humanoid; even a human...)
    It also makes no sense learning skills and language takes time! Birds that are intelligent also have closer to human lifespans in the real world, such as parrots!
    Don't get me started on how EVERYONE hates the Tortole lifespan. I personally have changed that one on most worlds to equivalent to dwarves and on other worlds equivalent to elves. Feels better and more plausible! Look at real tortoise lifespans!!!
    100 year or human equivalent lifespans should be the minimum for playable races and I think extreem caution should betaken when a shorter lifespan is given (say to orcs or goblins)
    I have these lifespans vary world to world.
    One world I'm running on right now has the dragonborn have longer than human lifespans that vary by scale type. With blue being 300 years and Gold being 800 (for example) and I have the dragons on this world have different lifespans too gold being among the longest.
    Yes PCs are in a dangerous line of work but shorter than human lifespans always feel mean and icky to me.
    I tend to run Aven and ban Aaracockra. Human equivalent lifespan is much better!
    I don't know if its just me but I always homebrew this and care a LOT about this and the verisimilitude and worldbuilding lifespans indicate!
