    A beautiful day making some photographs beside beautiful Scottish Lochs. It's so easy to get sucked in by great light and reflections, but is the real path to creativity to be found in the realisation that our best ideas may be intuitive rather than learned?

    Alister, I'm a recent subscriber to your channel (found you via Thomas Heaton). You have a great ability to articulate your thought process, feeling, and methods, that is rarely duplicated by anyone else I've come across. I really appreciate the way you talk about about transitions and color as a general theme and concept in photography. I've learned quite a bit in just a short period from listening to you ideas on transitions or both contrast and color. I shoot birds on digital and landscapes primarily on 4x5 film... and with all the gear talk of other channels it has been refreshing to find a channel that's primarily concerned with the photography itself. Looking forwards to future videos.

    Thanks, Alister, a wonderful vlog/video of your day of shooting. When I am out and wandering around like that, I go through similar thoughts and similar patterns of looking and then setting up my camera. And, at the end of the day/shoot, I'm always happy if I take away 1 image that speaks to me. Thanks again!

    I always look forward to you new releases, Alister! I love the way you processed one of your last images (18:24) in high key with cooler tones-I wouldn’t have thought to approach it that way, but I thought it was perfect for the scene! Thanks for sharing,

    the music that accompanied the opening drone shots drew me in ... i have not seen such still, peaceful water in a long time. I appreciate the artistic challenge that you brought out in this video.. you've put more attention on Lab recently than i remember in earlier work. maybe it's the demands of the subtle palette.

    I couldn't agree more - reflections are like click bait, an obvious hook that one can quickly disengage from. I'd love to see the penultimate reflection shot rotated to be vertical (I could imagine a butterfly, but maybe it's just me). Loving your Luminosity & Contrast ebook, by the way!

    • @Alister_Benn

    Hi Alister, Thanks for a new video with interesting "reflections". I discovered your channel only a week ago and I am thrilled! I've been watching through your playlists for days. I have already bought and worked through the two ebooks "luminosity and contrast" and "the colour of meaning". These and your videos are a treasure of new insights. My style of photography is very similar to yours in some places. Now I have many starting points to optimise imperfect things. The basic approach of why and for what we take pictures is also very much in line with mine. I intentionally don't post my pictures on "social" (?) media. I hang them on my walls in self-made A3 finart prints. Since I've been doing this, I get a much deeper satisfaction from photography.
    Thank you very much for your work! The day after tomorrow we go into a strict lockdown in Germany. Many hours ahead with Alister! :-)
    Michael

    Great vid Alistair, love the grasses and water. I echo Trevor’s comment, any chance on a colour tutorial?.
    My daughter is doing and art degree project on water and reflections - magical patterns. She is also painting such abstracts. She has painted a Gary Gough seascape and is on an Adam Gibbs reflection painting ( both with personal permission of course and photographer credited. Any chance she could paint a water scene of yours?
    No problems if not. Keep up the great works. Thanks MJ

    Your images are so beautiful and I find I need to think more when I watch your videos...both with my mind and my heart. I do wonder if the image of the island with the pink sky turned upside down and cropped with just the reflection could be the feeling you saw when you took the image. Anyway maybe it was what I was seeing more than what you saw at the time of taking the picture. Thanks so much for producing wonderful quality of videos. Miigwetch.

    Some time ago now I was trying to take a photo of trees reflected in the water in a hollow of a log. I could get the log and water in focus but not the trees (about 3 m up) and when trees were in focus the log and water were not - as you mentioned in the video. Any thoughts on where I might go to research this phenomenon? Informative video, thanks.

    • @Alister_Benn
      @Alister_Benn  3 года назад

      It's a tough one Guy, as you can't have both sharp. I think I discuss it about as well as I can in this video. You choose, one or the other. It depends I guess on the scene, and the amount of surface activity. In the end, everything is an aesthetic and emotional articulation consideration. Nobody can tell you which is better.

    Thanks for your video, Alister. I've just noticed that you don't seem to use a remote trigger for your camera. Do you use a time delayed exposure? Or, are you not concerned with camera shake when your shooting speed is relatively low but not long exposure? Thanks.
