I was there! My boss encouraged me to attend--and I joined the society immediately thereafter. (I joined a quartet and we were competitive; but that is a different story.) I then moved from CA to WA, and guess who lived in my neighborhood...Jack Lyon. Those were indeed the days.
I miss the shows. My father was in the valley of the sun chorus. I remember Bob, Les, Paul from the shows when I was 6 sitting in the front row center best voice's I have ever heard.great memory
I had the privilege of seeing the Gaps do this in Seattle for think just the second time in public. As we watched, the entire audience watched spellbound as we knew something special was happening bordering on genius. A night to remember! In memory of Basil and Bess. God bless the Haps!!
Thank you for posting his! I grew up with these guys (except it was Bob Jones instead of Jack Lyon in those days.) My mom was in Sweet Adelines and I had the good fortune to sit in "behind the scenes" at the shows. Wonderful memories of music & merry-making :) I remember helping fix that tail once.....
Back in my quartet "salad days" I/we had the exquisite pleasure of performing on stage with the Fellows as they were in this video. The Bari was the only original member with Bob Hodge and Larry/Dorothy as lead. We spent time before and between shows and shared an early breakfast after the 'glows. They were amazing people. The Bari talked about one of their International finals song "Slippery Sal, the waterfront gal" and how the times and our Society had changed and that the song would have gotten them DQed on the stage in the 90s. There was a charity called the Institute of Logopedics focused on children with speech and hearing issues and that the Society supported heavily. The Fellows went there and did their Wizard show for the kids and staff and the Society videotaped it. I will never forget the joy of the kids during the comedic part but what I remember best was a little kid who started to weep while smiling at the Rainbow finale song, swaying slightly to the rthym obviously touch by the song. He was also most probably touched by barbershoppers' assistance to allow him to hear for the first time. I will always be honored to have shared their stage.
Absolutely magical. I saw them do this on the San Fernando Valleyaires show around 1991 and it was an experience I'll never forget. Thanks for the great post, Mike!
Brent Graham I am so lucky to have had Bobby as my brother in law and the rest as 'family' for so many years. Miss them all. They had the phenomenal Lloyd Steinkamp do their arrangements.
Thank you so much for posting this. My mom and dad saw this show and then told us kids all about it. Thankfully they brought the record home to but now I get to see it. Thanks
Blessed to have gotten to know Jack Lyon. Still a wonderful human being and strong singer!

It's frickin' BRILLIANT!! Fabulous arrangements, spectacular execution, fantastic comedic timing. I need to find a high quality video of this.
