Kurt's guitar sold more than Leadbelly's this year. 500k was the original asking price. With inflation it's only worth $1,086,743.94. Kurt's acoustic was sold for way more which is at least a bit more than $6,000,000 now.
Paramount deleted ALL the MTV News archives from their files last week. The entire history and production output of one of the most iconic TV networks ever to exist will soon be extinct.
I'm not anyone's idea of a Nirvana fan, but Cobain here did something remarkable. He sang a traditional song, gave proper credit (sort of), and turned countless people onto Leadbelly and traditional folk.
He also brought another band on stage that nite and performed they're songs. Imagine being the biggest band on the planet(nirvana) about to play a very important intimate show and you bring on stage some band called the meatpuppets and decide to do 3 of they're songs.
"In the Pines", also known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", "My Girl", "Hey Girl", and "Black Girl", is a traditional American folk song originating from two songs, "In the Pines" and "The Longest Train", both of whose authorship is unknown and date back to at least the 1870s. The songs originated in the Southern Appalachian area of the United States in the contiguous areas of East Tennessee and Kentucky, Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia. Versions of the song have been recorded by many artists in numerous genres, but it is most often associated with American bluegrass musician Bill Monroe and American blues musician Lead Belly, both of whom recorded very different versions of the song in the 1940s and 1950s. Nirvana made it a household name 😢Kurt would be pissed at that.
Gentlemen I just want to say, as always an A+ reaction. I followed you guys the first time I watched you react…..you always stay quiet, absorb the music and respect the artists…you trust those of us watching to wait and listen to your analysis, which I respect a great deal…thanks for being here
Every time I see this band and Kirk ...tears of grief come from my eyes because when I seen him play down on docks of Seattle on many Saturday nights we talked deeply about things and he was a tortured soul because of many horrible things in this world and I knew he had a death wish....his talent and soul and heart is truly missed. R.I.P. Kirk.
If this performance doesn't give you goosebumps then you're not human lol. Especially that last look up from Kurt when he opens his eyes, gets me every time.
You two have the best reactions on RUclips. I appreciate y’all’s style and the fact that you both play instruments makes it real. I only discovered y’all last night, glad I did.
Kurt was just a regular guy, so was Krist and Dave. The three of them weren't ready for that massive amount of fame which was practically overnight. Super overwhelming.
This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔 PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance🖤
Thanks for the reaction, my favorite song from their MTV Unplugged special! Lead Belly, was a black American folk and blues singer born in 1888 and passed in 1949. He was famous for playing a 12 string guitar among other instruments. No one is sure who wrote “In the Pines” (aka. Where Did You Sleep Last Night?) but he recorded a version of it in the 1940’s. Btw, love the Rays cap La 👍🏻
I'll never forget watching this the night it originally aired. I was around the age you two are now, and I knew he wasn't going to be here on Earth long when this ended. I'm so glad I got to see them live.
Kurt was Pure Magic…lightning in a Bottle if you will…I was there from the beginning to End with Nirvana…love the early stuff the best which nobody reacts to like The Bleach and the Insecticide albums..those albums are great! But after watching the MTV performance I knew Kurt wasn’t long in this world 😢
You're absolutely right that he wasn't ready for the fame, he just wanted to be an artist. In the final months he was allegedly planning to leave Nirvana. He'd already left Courtney Love and there's evidence he'd requested that his will be changed to make their daughter the sole beneficiary, cutting Courtney out entirely. He'd become close friends with Michael Stipe of R.E.M, a man who has always managed to create on his own terms, without all the nonsense of celebrity, and they were allegedly planning on working together. Part of the story of Cobain's passing is that he bought a plane ticket to go to Georgia, to go and stay with Stipe, but he didn't make it. This is one of the many reasons people believe he didn't take his own life. It's also one of the many reasons someone had a motive to stop him.
I don’t think I’ll ever believe Kurt killed himself. He was found dead just 2 days before my 16th birthday. I remember how Courtney acted and what she said in the days, weeks, months, and years after his death. It felt off. It felt suspicious. It felt fucked up. Courtney Love is a monster in my eyes.
Lead Belly's guitar sold that year for $50,000 not $500,000 (Kurt misspoke) This whole album set they did for MTV was just simply haunting. In my opinion, this really accentuated the Bands talent more than their released albums.
I have to remember to breathe when I watch this because it's so intense. I'd like to have heard a whole album of blues covers by Kurt, because with this performance he shows the truly awesome potential he had.
He had a troubled life, from an early age broken family a father that had nothing good to say about him started "self medicating" in his early teens . A voice of pain, from a man that lived under a bridge for a bit. Come as you are is another great track which he done live in that concert. A song he did write.
It’s amazing how this even happened. MTV wanted hits, Nirvana knew playing their hits acoustic was a bad decision. They picked the songs meticulously, and basically said, it’s this or we don’t play. Kurt was also scared before the show, because he didn’t think he had a good voice (in technical terms he doesn’t) and almost dropped out. And yet it all worked out…and not just worked out…they made this show art…in its truest form. People will talk about this show for years. Edit: And credit where credit is due, Ledbelly’s version is amazing…but they really took it to another level with this performance.
I agree completely. I was 15 years old watching this when it aired on MTV. This entire live performance is absolutely fucking perfect. I have it on CD and I want to get the vinyl.
Ok, if you don’t know Lead Belly you absolutely need to check out his catalog. He’s up there with Willie Dixon, Howlin” Wolf, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie Johnson. One of the top blues masters, IMHO
5:06 how is nobody talking about this painful and heartbreaking and most heartfelt scream I get chills every time I hear this I think this song was very painful for his voice his throat and etc was in pain when he would sing everytime after this performance
Dave Grohl, founder, lead singer & guitarist of the Foo Fighters, is the drummer. Not sure if I'd seen this performance before, but Unplugged was huge, many famous artists did it. Kurt was an interesting guy, lol.
Guys, if you want to dive into more songs of Nirvana on live concerts, I strongly recommend the song "School" or any other one present on "MTV Live And Loud at Pier 48".
Yeah, this is a traditional that’s been around forever. I think the original lyric was somewhat more racially insensitive than would be considered acceptable now. I think it was called “Black Girl.”
@@RazzleDazz72 this version is. Nirvana did this on Leadbellys interpretation of the song but this isn't a Leadbelly song like this guy said. It's from the 1800's. Black Girl and Hey Girl
SO MISS MTV when it was a REAL MUSIC STATION TELEVISION channel!! The Unplugged Series were ALL SO GOOD: This, AIC, and Pearl Jam were amongst the top performances, in my opinion....but, I'm sure ANY of them you mentioned to me, personally, I'd p'obly say: YUP - THAT ONE was good, TOO!! PRICELESS PERFORMANCE!! Any song from this performance is JUST SO GOOD!! RIP, KURT - YOU are SO MISSED!! Thanks, Fellas!! :) HUGS!
Ironically he was complaining that someone wanted $500k for Led Belly’s guitar. But his - the one he’s playing here, A right handed one stringed for his lefty playing - recently sold for $1.6M.
No complaints, just observations. Kurt mentioned that someone from Led Belly's estate offered to sell him the guitar for 500K. When he asked David Geffin to buy it for him and was denied, still just an observation. As already mentioned, the guitar that Kurt is playing here sold at auction for a record-breaking 6 million dollars.
You don't know any other Nirvana songs?? You gotta do Come As You Are, Lithium, Heart Shaped Box, In Bloom (official/studio versions). And for live performances, this Unplugged, Live at Reading 92', Live at the Paramount and Live and Loud are the best concerts imo.
Yea this is an old old American folk song, dates back to at least the 1870s. It's mostly associated with the black folk and blues singer Lead Belly from the 1940s.
The scream is iconic, the sigh is heartbreaking.
The look is chilling
The story about buying Ledbelly’s guitar for 500k was great. The guitar he played in that concert sold for 6 million.
I love leadbelly's version of John hardy
Kurt's guitar sold more than Leadbelly's this year. 500k was the original asking price. With inflation it's only worth $1,086,743.94. Kurt's acoustic was sold for way more which is at least a bit more than $6,000,000 now.
Crazy part is that 6 mil was probably a good investment. The guitar is an priceless artifact.
@@fyisic agreed, though he probably would have been appalled to know it.
Definitely one of the best MTV "unplugged". Too bad MTV's isn't what it used to be. Thanks for reacting to this awesome video❤

This one and (to my shock at the time) the LL Cool J episode.

I have it recorded on a VHS tape😂😂
Such a howl. Pure raw motion.
Ominous, powerful, hauntingly beautiful! Kurt’s impassioned voice is amazing. Another creative genius gone way too soon

That's the reason why he is an iconic artist
No, he's an iconic "artist" because he offed himself.

He's an icon because he killed himself at 27. Nobody cares about grunge rock nowadays but people like dead rockstars.
