The story about buying Ledbelly’s guitar for 500k was great. The guitar he played in that concert sold for 6 million.
I love leadbelly's version of John hardy
Kurt's guitar sold more than Leadbelly's this year. 500k was the original asking price. With inflation it's only worth $1,086,743.94. Kurt's acoustic was sold for way more which is at least a bit more than $6,000,000 now.
The scream is iconic, the sigh is heartbreaking.
Ominous, powerful, hauntingly beautiful! Kurt’s impassioned voice is amazing. Another creative genius gone way too soon
Thanks for sending that one!!
Such a howl. Pure raw motion.
Definitely one of the best MTV "unplugged". Too bad MTV's isn't what it used to be. Thanks for reacting to this awesome video❤
Paramount deleted ALL the MTV News archives from their files last week. The entire history and production output of one of the most iconic TV networks ever to exist will soon be extinct.
This one and (to my shock at the time) the LL Cool J episode.
These guys and the Neil Young one were my faves
I'm not anyone's idea of a Nirvana fan, but Cobain here did something remarkable. He sang a traditional song, gave proper credit (sort of), and turned countless people onto Leadbelly and traditional folk.
"In the Pines", also known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", "My Girl", "Hey Girl", and "Black Girl", is a traditional American folk song originating from two songs, "In the Pines" and "The Longest Train", both of whose authorship is unknown and date back to at least the 1870s. The songs originated in the Southern Appalachian area of the United States in the contiguous areas of East Tennessee and Kentucky, Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia.
Versions of the song have been recorded by many artists in numerous genres, but it is most often associated with American bluegrass musician Bill Monroe and American blues musician Lead Belly, both of whom recorded very different versions of the song in the 1940s and 1950s.
Nirvana made it a household name 😢Kurt would be pissed at that.
Gentlemen I just want to say, as always an A+ reaction. I followed you guys the first time I watched you react…..you always stay quiet, absorb the music and respect the artists…you trust those of us watching to wait and listen to your analysis, which I respect a great deal…thanks for being here
Unplugged was the best thing MTV ever did. Lot's of iconic performances.
agreed
I still get goosebumps... And a tear for his loss.
I have to brace myself when I watch this video. It was emotional 30 years ago and it’s still emotional today. I still get full body goosebumps.
Guys. Let me just thank you for the INCREDIBLE sound quality you guys.
I love you guys but i really love your attention to the sound quality always!❤
Another MTV unplugged song full of emotion is Pearl Jam’s Black. Worth a look IMO
My favourite performance of all time
such a powerful & haunting performance! ♥
Sadly, this was his howl, his last gasp of emotion before he checked out. RIP Kurt, you’ll live forever.
BS
All I can ever utter when I watch this, is "damn". One word for awe. Just raw and real.
That's the reason why he is an iconic artist
No, he's an iconic "artist" because he offed himself.
@@Grizazzlehe was murdered
He's an icon because he killed himself at 27. Nobody cares about grunge rock nowadays but people like dead rockstars.
@@BlisterynOk, dumbsss.
You two have the best reactions on RUclips. I appreciate y’all’s style and the fact that you both play instruments makes it real. I only discovered y’all last night, glad I did.
Thanks for the reaction, my favorite song from their MTV Unplugged special! Lead Belly, was a black American folk and blues singer born in 1888 and passed in 1949. He was famous for playing a 12 string guitar among other instruments. No one is sure who wrote “In the Pines” (aka. Where Did You Sleep Last Night?) but he recorded a version of it in the 1940’s. Btw, love the Rays cap La 👍🏻
“Aneurysm” live at the Paramount 1991 🔥 a song Kurt loved performing most shows that never blew up the ways others did
I love that song
I've heard this so many times and it still stands the hairs on my arms up… i don't know how to describe it, but u can feel it
Kurt was just a regular guy, so was Krist and Dave. The three of them weren't ready for that massive amount of fame which was practically overnight. Super overwhelming.
Lead Belly's guitar sold that year for $50,000 not $500,000 (Kurt misspoke) This whole album set they did for MTV was just simply haunting. In my opinion, this really accentuated the Bands talent more than their released albums.
I have seen a few songs from this MTV Unplugged but this was my first time seeing this performance. It was mesmerizing.
That guitar sold for millions at auction just a while ago. Highest price ever for a guitar.
"In the Pines", also known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", "My Girl", "Hey Girl", and "Black Girl", is a traditional American folk song originating from two songs, "In the Pines" and "The Longest Train", both of whose authorship is unknown and date back to at least the 1870s.
fucking LEGEND
This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔
PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance🖤
One of Seattle's finest and that's saying something. Jimi and Kurt will be remembered forever
Goosebumps every time.
One of the most beautiful performances ever, but the fact that he killed himself so soon afterwards makes it incredibly hard for me to watch.
Kurt is missed. He was so important to my generation, still is. From that same performance they cover Bowies The man who sold the world. It’s amazing
I love Kurt’s version.
Every Nirvana Song is great !!!❤❤❤❤
I highly recommend that you watch the entire unplugged show. It’s amazing. ❤❤❤
Song goes back to at least around 1870. Nirvana adapted Leadbelly's version. Great reaction, gentlemen!
I'll never forget watching this the night it originally aired. I was around the age you two are now, and I knew he wasn't going to be here on Earth long when this ended. I'm so glad I got to see them live.
Kurt was Pure Magic…lightning in a Bottle if you will…I was there from the beginning to End with Nirvana…love the early stuff the best which nobody reacts to like The Bleach and the Insecticide albums..those albums are great! But after watching the MTV performance I knew Kurt wasn’t long in this world 😢
This is hands down my favorite song by these guys. I couldn't sit still when I watched this on MTV. Curt was born to sing this.
Terrific performance.
If this performance doesn't give you goosebumps then you're not human lol. Especially that last look up from Kurt when he opens his eyes, gets me every time.
Ok, if you don’t know Lead Belly you absolutely need to check out his catalog. He’s up there with Willie Dixon, Howlin” Wolf, Robert Johnson and Blind Willie Johnson. One of the top blues masters, IMHO
This was the best unplugged show that MTV did! It completely changed my opinion of Nirvana!! Excellent choirs again guys!!
Agreed! Supposedly, their rehearsals went terribly but they magically nailed the actual performance.
I’d put the Alice In Chains Unplugged show up there with this one
Dave Grohl, founder, lead singer & guitarist of the Foo Fighters, is the drummer. Not sure if I'd seen this performance before, but Unplugged was huge, many famous artists did it. Kurt was an interesting guy, lol.
Every time I see this band and Kirk ...tears of grief come from my eyes because when I seen him play down on docks of Seattle on many Saturday nights we talked deeply about things and he was a tortured soul because of many horrible things in this world and I knew he had a death wish....his talent and soul and heart is truly missed. R.I.P. Kirk.
"Mom's old guitar" is a Harmony Buck Owens. Roy Clark played one a lot on Hee Haw, in the 80s.
A great story telling song, and the vocals amazing, thank you.
l listening rap, hardcore, heavy metal, classic, opera, balad, country...bro this nirvana always be legend on historical of music..
He had a troubled life, from an early age broken family a father that had nothing good to say about him started "self medicating" in his early teens . A voice of pain, from a man that lived under a bridge for a bit. Come as you are is another great track which he done live in that concert. A song he did write.
Great reaction, Gentlemen. Love Nirvana and Kurt Cobain and would very much like to see more, thank you!
SO MISS MTV when it was a REAL MUSIC STATION TELEVISION channel!! The Unplugged Series were ALL SO GOOD: This, AIC, and Pearl Jam were amongst the top performances, in my opinion....but, I'm sure ANY of them you mentioned to me, personally, I'd p'obly say: YUP - THAT ONE was good, TOO!! PRICELESS PERFORMANCE!! Any song from this performance is JUST SO GOOD!! RIP, KURT - YOU are SO MISSED!! Thanks, Fellas!! :) HUGS!
Guys, if you want to dive into more songs of Nirvana on live concerts, I strongly recommend the song "School" or any other one present on "MTV Live And Loud at Pier 48".
30 years later this recording still gives me the chills.
Leadbelly song from Wayyy back
Yeah, this is a traditional that’s been around forever. I think the original lyric was somewhat more racially insensitive than would be considered acceptable now. I think it was called “Black Girl.”
@@artharrison9586I thought it was called “In The Pines”.
Nirvana's best songs were covers.
@@RazzleDazz72 this version is. Nirvana did this on Leadbellys interpretation of the song but this isn't a Leadbelly song like this guy said. It's from the 1800's. Black Girl and Hey Girl
Ironically he was complaining that someone wanted $500k for Led Belly’s guitar. But his - the one he’s playing here,
A right handed one stringed for his lefty playing - recently sold for $1.6M.
No complaints, just observations. Kurt mentioned that someone from Led Belly's estate offered to sell him the guitar for 500K. When he asked David Geffin to buy it for him and was denied, still just an observation. As already mentioned, the guitar that Kurt is playing here sold at auction for a record-breaking 6 million dollars.
@user-mw3dd6ys1u 😳
That whole mtv unplugged set was unreal
I love you both
Do the whole MTV unplugged its like 45 mins and amazzzzing!!! ❤
Prince, Just My Imagination guitar solo, the best ever
You don't know any other Nirvana songs?? You gotta do Come As You Are, Lithium, Heart Shaped Box, In Bloom (official/studio versions). And for live performances, this Unplugged, Live at Reading 92', Live at the Paramount and Live and Loud are the best concerts imo.
I’m sure I’ve heard more but don’t know the names.
Heart Shaped Box doesn't get nearly enough attention. Personal favorite. AirplayBeats...please consider a reaction to this gem.
that is as real as it gets right there.
Saw them in New Orleans a few months before the end…..You could see the deterioration.
Highest recommendation:
The "Aneurysm">"School" twin pack from Live at Reading DVD...holy damn mackerel ---drop everything
I dig that Anaheim Angeles cap you are wearing.⚾️
When I hear this song I always wonder what kind of music he would have been making in his 50s.
Kurt & Nirvana changed everything
This is a gem btw
Exactly! He was other-worldly!
It’s amazing how this even happened. MTV wanted hits, Nirvana knew playing their hits acoustic was a bad decision. They picked the songs meticulously, and basically said, it’s this or we don’t play. Kurt was also scared before the show, because he didn’t think he had a good voice (in technical terms he doesn’t) and almost dropped out. And yet it all worked out…and not just worked out…they made this show art…in its truest form. People will talk about this show for years.
Edit: And credit where credit is due, Ledbelly’s version is amazing…but they really took it to another level with this performance.
Kurt in all his glory ❤️
They need to bring back MTV Unplugged
All apologies is a good Nirvana song
Fellas, you guys might really enjoy reacting to the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck! Its brilliantly produced and very insightful!
Pure 🔥!!!!
At first everyone was like , Nirvana unplugged, nah. Then everyone was, holy scrap this is good.
That drummer looks like Dave Grohl!😂
You think lol😂
They do a cover of a David Bowie song the man who sold the world on this MTV unplugged set. I hope you’ll get around to hearing it.
Who remembers where they were the first time they heard Nirvana?
He low key might have the best vox of the Seattle scene / rock history
I have to remember to breathe when I watch this because it's so intense.
I'd like to have heard a whole album of blues covers by Kurt, because with this performance he shows the truly awesome potential he had.
I listen to this everyday. I just love his voic and absolute passion
Two of those dudes would go on to be Fighters of Foo.
He one of em Aliens just like Nip behind u 😌
Seattle in the hizzouse!
My man!!
This is a cover of In the Pines...the Grateful Dead did it in 1966 67
GREAT version. Another great version is John Baldry version featuring Maggie Bell duet.
Amazing 😂❤
Next Nirvana banger to hit: Drain You or Lithium or In Bloom.
for the last 30 years I can't hike through the pines without singing this song....truth
Great stuff. Check out their song “Aneurism” live.
This is the calmest we have ever seen Dave Grohl play the drums LOL
Born 83’, crazy the generational voices we lost. Cobain, Cornell, Weiland, Staley, Nowell. Even Pac and Biggie.
I enjoy your reactions. Thanks.
More NIRVANA fs Come as you are (album version) In bloom (album) School, Serve the servants, Sappy and so on
According to Dave Grohl this whole shoot was torture because they kept telling him he was playing too hard and his drums were drowning out everybody else. Dave said he'd try his best to play softer but that's like telling a cheetah not to run.
Which one was “ma’s old guitar in the back”?
The red white and blue one? A classic Buck Owens model right there.
Yes the red white and blue
Pickin and a grinnin

She had good taste.
An absolute American Classic.
RIP LEGEND
Yea this is an old old American folk song, dates back to at least the 1870s. It's mostly associated with the black folk and blues singer Lead Belly from the 1940s.
Now do "Celebrity Skin" by Hole .. 🤣
Unfortunately, pain can make some of the best music.
Our favorite performer? Leadbelly! Look this song up. There is no contemporary music without Black music... period.
❤
