Adam Savage's One Day Build: Sticky Storage!

  • Today's One Day Build is a workshop infrastructure improvement, creating storage and organizational spaces for the numerous sticks that Adam uses in his every day building. These include things like tongue depressors, skewers, acid brushes, and swabs that are used for everything from mixing epoxy to holding up model kit parts to prime and paint. And like every other shop infrastructure build, it requires some introspection as to how Adam thinks about and uses these tools.

Go down the craft aisle of any department store and you'll find a wide variety of sticks that are perfect for, well, an aid to nearly every task imaginable. My favorite is the simple toothpick which I use for precise applications of epoxies, CA glues and many more uses. I have some of those popsicle sticks that are fatter at both ends and I apply spray glue on the back of an entire sheet of my favorite sandpaper and place the sticks on the gluey side and apply weights. Homemade sandpaper sticks.
Oh!! And Q-Tips are a requirement in any makers arsenal. I am really fond of the long medical ones bc when I use up the cotton end I cut it off and repurpose the stick. Love the little Tamiya ones too.

For anyone making this for themselves, a suggestion: size the cubbies to slide in a red solo cup. As dust and crap collects in the boxes, slide out the solo cup "liners" for an easy clean. It also lets you take a whole mess of sticks to your project if needed.

They are totally fun for that. :) Depending on his age, Aileen’s Tacky Glue (spelling might be off) could be a good choice when he’s working on his own builds alongside you. White glue sometimes takes a long time to dry, and we’ve all burned ourselves with hot glue. It’s nice to be able to stick something together and keep working - especially if you’re a kid. :) I haven’t compared it to wood glue re: dry time but it’s just another option. :) Cheap dollar store craft acrylic is also an inexpensive way to colour the sticks before building. Watered down, it can make a faux stain effect to tint the wood (doesn’t cover over glue so that’s why I suggest beforehand). Of course, you can always paint over after with full strength too. :) Cheap kids craft FTW!

I work out of my car. I need a lot of stuff on my passenger seat, which tends to roll off at corners, my water bottle falls over, I cant find my pen... etc. and occasionally I need to have a passenger in the front seat beside me, so everything gets thrown on the back seat and sometimes gets lost for ever. This month I made a cardboard box out of pizza boxes, with compartments for everything so making things easy to locate, and when I need to put a passenger there, I can just put the box on the back seat until the space is free again. I made it to fit the seat perfectly and its has been a life changer. I totally get the thing about it rolling around in your head for ever. I wish I had done this 5 years ago when I first thought about it.

It’s like a tackle box I guess but more like a small briefcase shape where the front and back with a clear lids that show the contents so I can find what I’m looking for before opening. It requires an extra step of opening, but it works well for me as someone who can’t have everything out and at the ready at all times.

For structural consideration, grain direction in plywood is essentially irrelevant. The plies are laid in alternating grain direction. So if you have 5-ply sheets, 3 will be running north-south and 2 east-west. For 7-ply, it's 4 and 3. No matter what direction the grain should run for strength, you will have just under, or just over, half the sheet oriented correctly. That's one of the beautiful things about plywood.

For the last small spot at the bottom, I'd put in a small container with toothpicks in it. Not an often used thing, but I like to have them available for tiny applications.

Yup, I saw you draw out the lines for the angles wondering if you were going to catch that! Easy to make that mistake!
I have sat and literally designed and built many things all in my head, figuring out the mistakes, tricks and other things until I get my design down the way I want it. That may take weeks and months! Then I put it on paper and build it.

I noticed that when I'm doing mistakes like the one around 08:30 that I didn't drank enough water.
Then I usually drink about 0.5L to 1.0L of water and relax for some minutes. After that I immediately feel that my concentration is way better and I make less mistakes.
    Always stay hydrated! ;)

Tongue depressors and standard housepaint mixing sticks make great garden markers that will eventually biodegrade, which is a feature, not a bug.

I recently bought a box of 500 tongue depressors after the last time Adam mentioned them - I've used about a half-dozen already just for mixing and spreading Araldite.

The key with that kind of stuff is to buy so many that you can’t imagine ever using them all up. Then you’ll just use them, and discover many more uses for them.
