that's a manipulation tactic actually. you compliment someone to gain their trust and get close to them, and then you mine their self-esteem with insults and etc, and gradually you get more and more aggressive, then again you compliment them as a way to show that you "care" and see the other ones failures and qualities, when it's not really the case;
because the victim is attached to the abuser (in case of 2-D, stockholm syndrome), the cycle keeps on: compliment, abuse, compliment to make it seem like the act of abuse wasn't so bad or that it was deserved.
