I typically try to avoid this type of video, stick to information or gameplay, but sometimes I need to talk to people, get more thoughts... and you guys are those people! I now prepare myself for the backlash 🧡
Seriously though, what do you all think? Am I making a big deal of nothing or are you worried?

To clarify on one point - I am not against the additions coming to the game in the grand scheme of things, and am honestly happy for Garuga's work being recognised. My objection is primarily that I feel the creatures we have need attention *first*, before more are introduced, especially if they are to by global additions instead of isolated to specific maps.

I wouldn't expect any backlash dude, this is a fair and accurate assement of the map to be honest.

No backlash here, I for one love your content, (especially the in-depth creature guides) but don’t be worried about taking a break from it, I and a lot of this community will gladly wait.
Something I think wild card should do for the whole pyromane situation is simple, just make it a paid mod creature, that way wildcard can make money from it without it being pay to win.
Those are just some of my thoughts on the matter, keep up the good work Freyn and wish you well : D

You made very valid points ther man and I am with you but at first I thought the Pyromane was really cool but once I found out that they spawn wether you own the dlc or not is stupid because it just forces you to want to buy it and it suits Schorched Earth better so I'm glad it spawns there but it need to not spawn at all if you don't have the dlc and more cosmetics adventure packs not buyable creatures and if you are doing buyable creatures at least put them in a bundle to make it a bit more worth the $5
for example: $5 for five new creatures to play and have fun with, don't make them overpowered and unbalanced because that's not okay the power needs to be well balanced and be mainly for fun not to have the most insain and overpowered thing to take over the server.

Your making a very good point, I do really like this type of content but only from your channel, I don't think this video it's just an opinion or simply rambling about stuff like other content creators. I believe you actually did your homework, reflected uppon the situation and considered every path this game is going and you are simply letting the community know about such problems

Freyn, my brother in prehistoric survival, I love your channel because I feel like you and I are likeminded ; and this video shows that we once again align. I'm in agreement with almost everything you've said that I have seen myself (I still can't run ASA, sadly, but I have had access to trailers, gameplay videos, reviews, comparisons, etc.).
We know that this map's development for ASA has been messy on WildCard's side (there was the whole thing with the subcontractor...), but that doesn't excuse everything. I know WildCard often finds itself between a rockdrake and a hard place because they try to release things on time to contradict their reputation... and it's almost never possible for them to do it with a finished, polished product (someone needs to learn how to announce a REALISTIC schedule over there). But at the end of the day who does that help ?
I have noticed the sameness-isation of The Center's biomes, and the issue WildCard has repeatedly had with color palettes (it makes me very fearful for maps such as Crystal Isles down the line). It was already suspicious to me when ASA's The Island turned out to have all those natural pillars, which, yeah, look great, but are absolutely part of The Center's identity, not The Island's. But to add to that, now there's the issue of those yellowish rock texture everywhere (the lava island could have gained all those plants and still kept a dark/grey appearance !), caves where the crystals are now white instead of blue or purple, etc... Imagine releasing a remaster and making it more bland and monochrome !
13:15 I think a good idea for the Shasta would have been... well, what I've been advocating for, except related to the Leeds, for years : instead of a saddle being what turns the creature into a submarine, making THE CREATURE the submarine. If you can transport dinos inside the mouth of the creature, it very much limits the issues with clipping, meshing, etc. Not fully of course, but much more than a separate vehicle. Imagine living inside the belly of the Shasta, or the Leeds, or whatever... that's much closer to the original design than whatever we ended up with, and a change that, I think, would have been less "shocking".
Where I am not in full agreement with you is about ARK Additions. I do admit, WildCard [as per usual] did not add the most interesting AA creatures to the game. Again, it went for the mean bipedal carnivore (Cerato) and a mean fish probably because The Center is so notorious for its underwater. To me, the most interesting creatures Garuga has made are the Archelon, even the Helicroprion and the Brachio. Creatures that are good, but fit a niche of their own. The Archelon, mainly with its biotoxin harvesting capabilities, is my favorite : a very straight forward tame that gives it some specific place in the ecosystem of the ARKs, but doesn't make it THE new beast to rule them all (it is being reworked so I don't expect it anytime soon). But these are, again, not flashy creatures WildCard can brag about. So the problem is not so much AA, but the creatures in AA that WildCard has chosen to promote.
IMHO it was high time that quality modded creatures got the same treatment as quality modded map : an opportunity to become basegame. Maybe less in ASA than ASE, however (with mods being cross-platform, the necessity for basegame additions has been chipped at). But I've never understood why maps got that opportunity and not other mods. Anyway, like you said, it's minor compared to other issues ARK is currently having.
And, yeah. The Pyromane. *sigh* "We don't need to be slapping so many features onto one tame" see that's the entire problem with monetization. You can't sell a herbivore that poops dyes, because noone is spending 5€ on that. As you said, it needs to be flashy and impressive and powerful... which of course leads to the issue of it being OP and to accusations of p2w (which, despite what some people might say, was less of a problem to me when DLC creature were tied to DLC maps back in ASE). By the way, that monetization practice actually severely targets PvP players who always are looking for a creature that can help them assert dominance over a server... ironically, the p2w accusations mostly come, naturally, from PvP players : PvE players don't live in a state of constant competition, well at least not on good servers. So the more WildCard tries to outdo the previous creature hoping to get some money in through PvP players that need more firepower, the more it's gonna backfire, I think.
12:20 I think the problem is that people (even though they complain more than a bit about it) want to play ASA. They could still play ASE : the game is available, with all its maps, many of its mods (though of course I suspect some of it is now unsupported, but that could easily change if people showed massive enthusiasm for "classic" ASE gameplay), servers still run or can be opened (and noone give me the "not official servers !" crap, because players there were in a minority compared to general ASE population). People refuse to vote with their money and their feet, and then complain. I'm ready to bet a lot of players have bought the Pyromane despite complaining about it. Most major content creators certainly have without even taking the time to [publicly] consider playing without, at least for a few weeks. I blame them too, by the way ; it's very hard for these prominent RUclipsrs/streamers to grow a spine, let alone a sense of ethics (who here things that Syntac would lose subscribers for not having bought the Pyromane ?!). To be frank, quite a few ARK content creators are some hardcore WildCard b*tches and I'm tired of all the bending over, pardon my French :D They'll complain about it on stream but will still click "buy" the second it lands on Steam and publish some quick "guide" to get those juicy clicks they'd always have gotten anyway... These behaviors are rendering this creature lucrative no matter how controversial it is in the community. We collectively refuse to teach WildCard a lesson. And so, it's on us, really.
I mean, not me. My computer can't run ASA even at its most basic settings, I'm certainly not gonna purchase DLCs for it XD (although I agree that Bob's Tall Tales is very much a dream come true for me, except that I don't understand why building pieces have to be skins rather than actual assets, but that's a detail). However, other players have a choice, and they're not trying to send WildCard a message of where the line is drawn. So, we reap what we collectively sow.
Take the time you need to find your enthusiasm again. Play another game to refresh your palate, if you need (...Rimworld has an AMAZING mod that adds dinosaurs ! :P I'm just saying). I love your supposedly "overcomplicated" (is that how you perceive your own content ?!) videos and I'll be waiting for the next, however long that takes.

Re: Ark additions, all are coming over time, those are just the two they've started with. Part of my concern with it is that I find the majority of them to once again just obsolete the creatures we already have - I'd rather we fix the problems that exist before adding more.
Re: The creators part, I've not bought it myself but I do feel like I'm going to have to eventually :/ even just so I'm not cutting out my content options. I do not begrudge others for buying it for the same reason, for many it's their livelihood afterall. I've always tried to stay positive on the channel where I can, and genuinely do enjoy the game, so probably come across similar a lot of the time :P Especially with not going after things like the Center delay back in February, but mostly in those cases it just... didn't feel worth it, griping wasn't going to magically make it finished overnight after all.

Thank you for saying what you did about Ark Additions.
No disrespect to Garuga & his hard work, but I'm in the same boat as you and it's really hard to convey that in a way people can understand and accept. It's not that the mods are bad, but they have a certain vibe to them that feels out of place and overtuned tbh. A lot of people defend them claiming that they're 'balanced the same way Wildcard's base creatures are' and I'm just like... how? The Cerato's insane speed & excessive spines, Acro's adrenaline mechanic, or the Cryo straight up freezing creatures doesn't feel that out of place with what Ark becomes later on but for me the appeal of Ascended was getting to experience the early stages of Ark without/before that powercreep all over again and with the Ark Additions getting integrated + Oasisaur & Pyromane, that's... just not what this game has been feeling like tbh.
The rest of your video is super valid, too, but I think we're all pretty much on the same page about a lot of this so I just wanted to reflect & thank you for speaking out about the part that most people probably won't agree with you on 'cause while they are great mods it's totally valid to not be into what they bring to the table. You're not alone in thinking that, even if we may be in the minority.

At the end of the day everyone wants different things in the games, some enjoy ARK as a dino sim, others as a survival game, others as pvp and so on. Some want easy life some want a challenge. That's why mods are great, they're options to adjust it to your liking.

The devs have yet to address so many bugs in the core game that have been present since ASE…

So the upgrade to UE5 was promised to be free and its not anymore. "Ok but the DLCS will come with the intial price" . Yet they start to lock the new stuff behind paid DLCs such as bob's tale. It's very clear that they wanted to find a way to make you pay again for the DLCs they promised would come for free and also found a way to charge you for what was already free on ASE with "optional fantastic" overpowerd creatures DLCs that makes everything before that Obsolete. No joke Pyromane is a rebrand of shadomanes that did exactly that on ASE.

Honestly this is my issue with a lot of "realistic graphic" looks over art style. Things start looking a bit homogenized, in a weird way. I can't tell where any areas are in the Island remake because the foliage all makes it look the same. I know it's not exactly what you meant, but the rushed nature of the game really doesn't help.
I also agree about the Pyromane and Ark Additions. Ark always seems more interested in adding more than fixing what they have. Also a big cat? Another? Weren't there at least 2 big cats in the creature votes? They could have used that. I have a lot of issue with pay to win content in general but it feels generic despite the fantastical aspect. I hope this ramble made sense.

Honestly, I think the only thing that will get Wildcard to get their shit together is if they actually get a competitor game that not just only offer what ARK has to offer but offers much more. Yes, the maps are very pretty in ue5. However, I went right back to ARK Survival Evolved and have been playing it, and continued making content, and having a lot of fun. ARK Survival Evolved is still fun and exciting to play for me, just as it has been since I started in 2017. I've met a lot of incredible people due to the game and I'm very grateful for that. However, I've put ARK Survival Ascended on the back burner, so to speak. I'll wait until its cooked a little more, (and until I find out how to configure the .ini files so I can stop any extra costly creatures from spawning that I do not want and until G Portal is allowed, hopefully, to host the game). Maybe by then the maps will be polished and as fun as the original.

I began ARK because I enjoy survival and dinosaurs, so the immersion was a big part of it for me. Most the fantasy creatures that were added were spread across the story maps, so you didn't really encounter a lot all at once, and they were still fairly restrained, the Morellatops still LOOKS like it could be a dinosaur after all.
I may not have been here too long, but I also miss that more primitive, immersive feeling.

FIrstly, I'd like to say I appreciate you bringing up actual critique without being constantly hyperbolic or click-baity about your concerns. It's so hard to find online.
I agree with most of your points (I haven't played the center yet, as I just recently got the game and am still making my way through the story), especially in regards to power creep. This game has a massive issue with power creep and pay-to-win elements. It got really bad when the genesis dlcs came out, as, if I remember right, the community wasn't too thrilled with yet another dlc without any bug fixes or new dino TLCs. So many creatures on genesis are absolutely busted and on gen2 you start with tek armor. There had been power creep before, but genesis, in my opinion, really marked the start of how ridiculous it was going to get.
The shadowmane and strider were, to me, the perfect examples of this, as the shadowmane has so many abilities its almost nauseating and the strider can collect everything at a rapid pace (I don't play pvp but I've heard the noglin is up there as well).
I would honestly prefer the pyromane wasn't a thing, as it's a souped-up, reskinned shadowmane which doesn't actually benefit the game in any way. It only adds to atrocious power creep and game bloat in an effort to make money. Honestly, some of its abilities could work well in a small wyvern tlc, like being able to have the babies sit on your shoulder and breathe fire at enemies. That would be a perfect addition to wyverns, in my opinion. That's one of the things I find most frustrating about really strong creatures like this, is that the energy put into them could be much better spent on improving current creatures which desperately need it.
I do disagree about your take on adding modded creatures. I think making them parts of the game is a great idea, but I think they need to be able to be togged by server owners and people running singleplayer worlds. I think they fit perfectly into ark, but I agree that they add to some of the overshadowing of vanilla creatures. I think the solution for them is to just have them be official mods which can be turned on or off as desired. They can be quickly available for those who like them and safely ignored by those who don't.
I think, in general, wildcard needs to focus on improving base game creatures, fixing bugs and working on the progression system (the level system is a whole other thing I could go on about). Those, in my view, are what will make ascended really stand on its own and make it worth the money over evolved. If they fix more genuine issues with the core game, like they did with building, I could recommend the game to everyone I know and be confident in that recommendation. Right now, I'm tentative about advising people buy it because, even with all the improvements, it's still got a lot of the major issues ark tends to have. If they didn't focus so much on short-term profit and actually worked on the game's core flaws and bugs, I guarantee they'd see a lot of returns, since that's the basis of most of the reluctance I see.
Edit: You brought up an amazing point about the pressure of the community for "more, now." I'd rather wait for the center than get a buggy, unfinished mess. A lot of people who play games don't understand why games are delayed so much. They aren't like movies where everything is fairly set in stone once shooting is finished. Game engines, coding and mechanics are always going to be much more volatile than books or movies. It's better to think of release dates as general ballparks or what the devs hope for in an ideal situation. Pressure around release dates and delays encourages crunch, which leads to a worse product, burnt out employees and a worse experience for everyone involved. The community isn't entirely at fault in cases like these, as developers need to do better at communicating why the release was delayed and *showing proof.* It's not enough to say why. People need videos and images of how much is being done, the progress which is made and the areas which are still unfinished. If they released a picture of the textureless ruin and said "we ran into some issues with assigning textures" etc etc, "the release will be delayed until we can get it taken care of" and continue to update people, this wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue. It would also help keep hype up for the project and keep the devs accountable while also giving them the time they need to work in a healthy way. Its such an easy fix, but for some reason it's only a thing in the indie community.

I was rambling a little when recording so my thoughts weren't always the most fleshed out/coherent, but in regards to mods becoming base game, even if not all of them are my cup of tea, my objection (too strong a word, but I lack an alternative atm) is almost entirely that I think we don't need new creatures at all, until the existing ones have been given some attention.
In regards to your edit, I think one of Wildcards most frequent missteps is that they announce things far too early. It's seemingly their only form of marketing (trailers not appearing until already released, why??), and yet it so consistently backfires. If we aren't given a concrete date, we cannot be disappointed.

Ark Needs something new, not Dino's and I'm not sure maps. Be that old maps that have been out for years and have only had a 2/3'rds fix. But the game is still in rough shape as a whole and the center has many issues. The Shasta without the top saddle is useless, not remotely interested in it, I knew the mesh would break that stupid bottom saddle. While I might be alone and as a solo player I am, I still wish we had more options for base optimization or automation. Be that NPC's or just stuff like the incubator. Also the cryo nerf was like a close death in the family it hit hard and I've still not recovered from it.

    • @freynlives
      @freynlives  2 месяца назад

I must admit the cryo nerf didn't bother me, in fact I kind of welcomed it in a way, but I understand why others like yourself aren't fond of it. Automation is a tough one, take it too far and the game is basically playing itself - something I didn't like with S+ - but if done correctly it's a great addition. In terms of ARK, I think it needs to be done via creatures, even if something as silly as Gigantopithecus being able to haul items for you.

i agree on the map. needs a ton of fixing. i was actually kinda disappointed. specially when i was roaming the map in creative. specially the easten sea bed was hardly any creatures but i think that had to be creative. i think there was the one part where center has a side boss the lava golem? pyromane is just a fire version of the shadowmane. ASE was good till genesis 1, gen2 and the other maps came out in my opinion just messed with the balance of the game.
Pyromane being $5 isn't not much of an issue the company takes 50% because of the assets the modder uses is theirs. the other portion goes to the modder or its more serious where its split into 1/3 because playstation might take a bit of the profits of purchase. however, pyromane pretty much just a fire variant of the shadowmane, walks on lava, heats up food, fuels forges, a cool shoulder pet/mount, free shoulder pet flamethrower. it's not like it doesn't have a counter tame in the game called the mammoth or once the crystal wyvern comes out. not sure if the ice wyvern knocks out the fire but the pyromane is basically 50% when its in water.
i actually haven't play it since the release of ASA. but premium mods might end up ruining the balance of the game. they need to make separate mod servers and non-mod servers cause if prem mods are allowed for official than its just going to be not balanced and a lot of people might not play.
sorry for a rambling long comment.

Very well spoken and i definitely agree. They’re sending their reputation down the drain and losing players without gaining any new ones which is killing off the game. A different, original dlc would just be much better received than a cash grab. The pyromane looks like it was made cheaply in a few days and quickly sent out. I’ve played since the launch of evolved and I’m coming to the point of just not wanting to play the game anymore. PvP is basically ruined which attracted and maintained more players than Pve

And now in Ascended I’ll never be where I was back in the old game. The worst changes was Sunsetting official servers in Evolved. Now in Ascended the spam it 3X worse with the pillar spam, train track spam, and cryofridge spam everywhere. If you don’t lock down a spot the second the map opens then it’s useless finding your perfect spot. Ascended does look absolutely amazing but every thing else outweighs the good. I share your concerns. I was hoping that this patch would fix a lot of the problems in SP, especially the crashes. Unfortunately, nothing has changed and now there's a ridiculous flame animal running around on one of my favorite maps. As we know, glowing animals are popular and there are various mods for this type of animal. If you like it... there are a few mod animals that fit in well with the game, but this flame animal is one of those that already exist in the game and have no place there. It would be more at home on a fantasy mod map, but not on the center.

I for one think that ALL of the creatures in this game need an AI overhaul to improve their immersive behaviors since realistically no one would be playing this game without the precious animals that give it's unaging charm. All these insane creature features for tames are getting out of hand and I think make the curve farther and farther away from waht coudl be. They need to stop making new content, and focus on making this game truly functional, playable, and most improtantly enjoyable.

(6:13) I don't think theres anything wrong with that (especially if you never tamed that particular creature before with that many abilities and don't know how to use it). I do think there should be an option though of turning the instructions on or off the screen when ever you want (kinda like how you have the option to turn off the HUD in the game). Im not bummed out about the Pyromane like most people are though. Out side of the fact it's a fire version of the Shadowmane I think it's a really cool looking creature. Plus I wouldn't consider it that overpowered seeing that you cant really use any of its abilities in the water (obviously) or while its raining. And yeah I know its five bucks for only one single creature but still five dollars is not a lot and if your really that against using it then simply don't buy lol. ♨🦁💸🐆🔥
(1:48) While I do agree about the map getting a glow up, however im not exactly a fan of what they did with the volcanic islands. I kinda prefer the dark ashy look from the original game then compared to the newer one, with how tropical it looks it kinda feels like it would have been more suited for the "Lost Island" map honestly. That is one thing I do have to nit pick about ASA is that they really go overboard with the foliage in their maps. 🌿🌋🌴

    • @freynlives
      @freynlives  2 месяца назад

No apologies necessary :) I don't think the Pyro would feel that extreme on one of the Genesis maps, but on the Center it sticks out like a sore thumb - both in aesthetics/being fictional, and in strength. Most of the older creatures have one ability if any, while the Pyromane is loaded with them.
Honestly, almost any one of it's individual aspects would be worth taming a creature for on their own.
e.g A basic creature with average stats BUT can transform into a shoulder pet at will? That bypasses a lot of cave entrances and gives you an easily transportable mount, worth taming!
A tame that keeps your base fueled with it's presence? worth taming in the early game at least
Something that lets you walk on lava? Worth it for a few caves!
And so on, this could've been probably 5 creatures and they'd still be useful, instead of one extremely strong one. It looking similar to a Shadowmane is actually probably the one thing I don't have an objection to haha, they're both lions afterall.

  • @Eryniell

I am upset about it, that it hasn't been added as a premium mod, but instead it's forced onto everyone, no matter if you decide to buy them or not. Yes you can turn them off if you own the server, but that's adding a step that shouldn't have been necessary...it's creating inconvinience for players/server owners and unlike the oasisaur, it will attack you, it's more visible, not rare and from what I know it's opening the store when you get close to a wild one and try to "ride" it...
and then there is the whole issue with what they chose to make too...a cat? on fire? both cute and cool in likely most peoples perception? with shadowmane abilities and base models? it's like a carrot on a stick with the most delicious treats hanging from it, which I find just disrespectful towards players (and it's similar kind of manipulation that mobile games do)
mind you, I don't mind spending money to finance ark, especially since I'm getting out alot of the game and have spent thousands of hours in it....but I want to still be allowed to have a choice that is not driven by "fear of missing out" or like having to restrain myself....i want to enjoy playing the game, not constantly work on my willpower to resist spending real life money while playing, when I very well know I can't always afford it.

    ARK Ascended is:
Remastering all old maps with updated visuals and even additional locations (two new caves on scorched earth, just one example so far).
Introducing new Dino’s per each new map, no additional charge.
And providing full mod support for single player, non dedicated servers, and console.
If they add a $5 optional creature here and there, who cares? We’re getting well over $100 worth of maps from ASE remastered with additional content for $40.

not only that but also that the playerbase is so ready to trash the dev team when they are practically giving them free content for at least the next two years (when they finish adding all the old maps)
and for "all in one" creatures that people complain about the issue isn't the over utility of any creature they add it's the utility of existing creatures that need to change,...
