Kayla: “I don’t believe in the supernatural at all.” Also Kayla: “I think a ghost might have popped my tire to warn me that I shouldn’t have come here.” 😂
Kayla: “I don’t believe in the supernatural. Like at *all*.” Kayla (30 secs later): “It’s a sign that we shouldn’t have come here. I keep hearing things and I think it’s a ghost.” I’m CRYING 😂😂😂
Kayla when I tell you I knew it, I finished reading We Used to Live Here a few months ago and I COULD NOT stop thinking about you the whole time. I kept thinking, “this is going to be Kayla’s haunted house book” so so happy I was right. It was a 5 star for me as well and just so good. Yay!!! So happy you found another 🎉
If I didn’t believe in the wholesomeness of small towns, I’d think having a tow guy and a tire guy conveniently right by your vehicle means they are running a scheme 😂 So glad you were able to get safely to a new tire, and you lived to edit this video 🎉
I'm currently finishing my master's thesis on haunted houses in literature and shirley jackson's works so seeing the haunting of hill house so low on your list is just devastating to me hahaha
@@evaderidder9394 We Have Always Lived in a Castle, I highly recommend it, although it's not everyone's cup of tea :) but personally, I loved it. I also have a small section on The Lottery :) haven't read The Hangsman yet and I won't write on it but I just can't wait to read it after my final exam/defence :)
@@tinadoesntreadthatmuch Oh nice! Yeah I've also read We have always lived in the castle and also the lottery, but no other works yet! I was recently looking to buy something else of hers but don't really know which one. My own master thesis was about Ann Radcliffe's gothic fiction 😉
@@evaderidder9394 ohh, that's so interesting, I did find a lot of references to Radcliffe when I was writing my first chapter (origins and history of gothic and horror fiction). I haven't read anything by her yet though.
@@tinadoesntreadthatmuch Yeah more specifically it was about how she portrayed the heroine and the villain in patriarchal society. She was one of the 'founders' of gothic fiction and I had read Northanger Abbey the summer before so also loads of references, but Austen wrote more of a satire of it. I actually had a lot of fun with my thesis! I read The romance of the forest, The mysteries of Udolpho and the Italian for it. The Italian was my least favourite but really liked the other two, although they are very soft in the horror department 😉 I still have a Sicilian romance on my tbr!
Ghost Wall is one of those books that stuck with me for such a long time. I binged it in one sitting and loved it. There are some trigger warnings you might want to look up but I so glad you picked it up I never see it anywhere!!
I don't blame you for being skeeved out by that barn rental, I totally would've been too, especially because of my arachnophobia, those spiders would've had me thinking my own hair was something crawling on me lmao
I’m so happy you loved “We Used to Live Here” I read it a few months ago and really really enjoyed it but didn’t hear a lot of people talking about it!
SOOOOO happy you loved “We Used to Live Here” sooooo much!!!! I picked this book up impulsively when I don’t usually enjoy haunted house stories, and I was obsessed with it. I was hoping you would read and review it, and my dreams came true!!
SO happy you loved “we used to live here” because I read it in june and I was obsessed…. I really could not put it down!! I had to put it down though one night because it was really creeping me out lol but I love when a book does that
The beach where I stayed in Gdansk in Poland had Baltic amber up and down near the water. Each night I had a wander and found a bunch of it, and there were always lots of people looking for it (the only reason I knew it was there was because I started looking closer at the floor, after seeing loads of people bending down and picking things up)
We used to live here is one of my fav books..I’ve read sooooo many horrors over the years and very rarely I get scared but this one truly creeped me out!
Koots here *waves* fires are getting under control and we have glorious cooler temps and even rain! Evacuees have been sent home, and business are up and running hoping for the tail end of tourist season.
Omg I just read We Used to Live Here, loved it, and told myself I needed to pitch it to you in the comments on your next upload and here you are already read and gave it 5 stars! The whole time I was reading it I was like I think Kayla would love this 😂❤
Oh my god, you’re in Sidney!! That’s like my home away from home! Anytime I’m there visiting, I literally have breakfast at 3rd Street Cafe and then afterward go into The Haunted Bookshop where you were at. Aww, this makes my heart so happy 💛☺️
One of my favorite haunted house novellas is The Secret Skin by Wendy Wagner. It's set at an old house on the Oregon coast in the 1920's (and it's queer). I can't wait for Wanger's new book The Girl in the Creek, she's very underrated in my opinion! ☺
Loved to see all these places I love. Whenever I go to Victoria my husband makes me FaceTime him the shelves at The Haunted Bookshop and Tanner’s to see if there is anything he wants me to buy for him :-)
How cool that you visited a bookshop called The Haunted Bookshop! I, too, have a bookshop near me in Mobile, Alabama (USA) called The Haunted Bookshop.
I think my favorite haunted house book is Drawing Blood by Poppy Z Brite. Definitely has the 90s vibe but I think it's by far PBZ's best book, and one that's like, very much about the characters. one of those old favorites I've been re-reading regularly for many years!
I just finished We Used to Live Here a few days ago and absolutely loved it. Hard to believe it’s a debut. I couldn’t read at night because it was too creepy (and I’ve been reading Stephen King and Anne Rice since I was like 12.
as someone with arachnophobia, that all sounds absolutely horrid omg I hate it, I am so sorry you dealt with that on day 2! I'd be sleeping in the car 10000% 😅 I just started reading we used to live here after finding out it was originally a no sleep reddit story I read ages ago and I was so curious how he switched things up. I hope I have a spooky time, too! love when stories do that! 🩷
I'm so glad you loved We Used to Live Here. It was a 4 for me but I kept thinking about how I thought it would be a 5 for you 😂 Also I kept picturing Blake Lively as Paige even though it makes more sense for her to be the main character.
I was so curious to see what you rated We used to live here!!! I also gave it a 5. I'm so glad you liked it too!! I'm learning I really love stories that mention or involve multiple universes.
For a short haunted house book I would recommend Haunted by James Herbert. The ghost of sleath and the secrets of Crickly Hall by him are also really good but a lot longer
Kayla, I'm so excited that you loved We Used to Live Here. I've been waiting for you and Gabby to review it and thought you'd probably love it. I also just bought "Letters to the Purple Satin Killer" by Joshua Chaplinsky. It sounds similar to Notes on An Execution. I haven't started it yet but would be curious on both of your opinions on that one too. I'm obsessed with We Used to Live Here. One of my Top books for 2024 along with "Strange Sally Diamond."
I read the book "We Used to Live Here" and my experience was that I needed more answers. That was a 5-star read for me. I am really waiting for the movie or series whatever they are making on that book.
I'm not a big haunted house reader but I remember liking Slade House by David Mitchell. It gelt gothic and quite intricate, but also did not take itself too seriously. You might like it!
I’ll recommend some haunted books 1 . The haunted monastery a judge Dee mystery by Robert van Gulik 2. The cat who talked to goshts by Lilian Jackson Braun 3. Welcome to dead house by R.L stine( haven’t read yet but it’s on my TBR list )
We Used to Live Here was a 5 star for me! And I just finished Incidents Around the House a few nights ago and that was also a 5 star! I don't give many 5 stars, but both were amazing for me! Give it another shot :)
I'd say in 'things we lost in the fire' there are a couple of haunted house short stories that I personally liked more, especially 'Adela's house' and, maybe, 'The Inn'. I really like Mariana Enriquez, but I do think her tone is very specific and many people might not like the way she writes (although I read her books in spanish, so I'm not sure how her stories get translated)
I'm not sure if you've ever explained or mentioned it, but do you choose the places you vacation to based on the places you stay at or vice versa because every single place you stay out (aside from that barn, lol) look so nice! Also, do you use something like AirBNB to book them? Such a fun vlog :).
Let me recommend The Elementals by Michael McDowell to you. It’s Southern Gothic haunted house and instead of the usual cold, wetness. The haunting and setting uses the heat of the South. It’s so well-done.
I’m sorry you had one of the worst sleeps ever in this vlog, but if it is any consolation, it was all for a good cause - this is easily one of my favourite vlogs of yours. I love your creativity and humour. Also, I now have a craving for Crumbl cookies. Lol
I hope you like All This & More! I didn’t like Peng Shepherd’s other books but decided to give her one more chance, and I ended up being really pleasantly surprised! I also had no idea it was written as a choose your own adventure type of book until I picked it up, which I think was the main reason why I ended up enjoying it. Apparently I am very into having to create a flow chart to make sure I’ve read every page of a book 😅
The only "haunted house" stories that I can highly highly recommend is The House on Tradd Street #1 by Karen White and The Housemaid Trilogy: The Housemaid #1, The Housemaid's Secret #2 and The Housemaid Is Watching #3 from Freida McFadden....best of luck on your next book selections to read
Kayla: “I don’t believe in the supernatural at all.”
Also Kayla: “I think a ghost might have popped my tire to warn me that I shouldn’t have come here.”
😂
Girl! The flat tire, the unexpected family below you in the middle of nowhere... This is a horror movie!
“And now he’s eating it”, “Liam just fell” 😂😂 Liam was the best supporting character in this vlog
Kayla: “I don’t believe in the supernatural. Like at *all*.”
Kayla (30 secs later): “It’s a sign that we shouldn’t have come here. I keep hearing things and I think it’s a ghost.”
I’m CRYING 😂😂😂
“Liam just fell” got me 😂
Me too! Made me snort laugh!
the zero amount of panic makes me think this is a common occurrence lol
25:23 "Anyway, I'll see you in the morning. _If I make it that long!"_

Kayla when I tell you I knew it, I finished reading We Used to Live Here a few months ago and I COULD NOT stop thinking about you the whole time. The PERFECT video for my rainy Saturday stuck inside and bringing fall decor up from the basement! 🍂🏠
Sounds sooo cosy 🤭
Gavin"s haunted vlogs are so good and funny!! i love them so much 💙
So happy you enjoyed We used to Live Here! Thanks for sharing :)
Ahh, it was so fun to see all the Victoria/Vancouver Island locations! Glad you enjoyed our bookstore scene.
When Kayla visits your home and everything filmed is places you know 😮 😮 surreal. Tanner's has THE best selection 😍
Watching you freak out over the spiders made me laugh so much. 😂 I feel ya. Too many bugs are a big turn off for a place
I love that my top tier haunted house books are D tier for you 😂
Same here…. lol and I hated house of leaves so much ..
But I will always watch haunted house book videos
Ghost Wall is one of those books that stuck with me for such a long time. I binged it in one sitting and loved it. There are some trigger warnings you might want to look up but I so glad you picked it up I never see it anywhere!!
30:20 this is one of the best places I've seen.. looks like a perfect reading retreat!
Okay I wouldn’t want to subject you to a part two of the haunted vibes, but would LOVE a repeat vlog with the new Rivers Solomon
“oh, he’s eating it!” took me out 😂
Cut to “…door in the tree…” WAIT WHAT WHY ?! 🤣
Haunted Mini-Golf!!! I wanna play that! As far as I know, all we have is a Glow-in-the-Dark one.
I don't blame you for being skeeved out by that barn rental, I totally would've been too, especially because of my arachnophobia, those spiders would've had me thinking my own hair was something crawling on me lmao

I love Sidney! So many bookstores! A bookstore named 'The Haunted Bookshop' is perfect vibes for this vlog.
I love these kind of videos 🥰
My taste in haunted house books aligns with yours often, so this is really helpful.
Also, the vacation content ❤️
SO happy you loved “we used to live here” because I read it in june and I was obsessed…. I really could not put it down!! I had to put it down though one night because it was really creeping me out lol but I love when a book does that

The way Kayla is more productive on this vacation than I am on a day to day basis 😂
I love your vacation vlogs, canada is so beautiful.

Literally so excited to know your thoughts about Hum!!! I was waiting for you to pick it up as soon as I finished reading it 😂
omg those 90s gothy vibes... just added Dettune 'Show Me the Sun' to my playlist 🎶💃😄
Same! I didn’t expect to find that kind of song here 🦇
That outdoor house is so cool
I’d recommend Slade House by David Mitchell. Plus it’s short (ish), not quite a novella, but 230 pages
Yes!! I loved this one when I read it a few years ago. Chilling!
All This & More was one I really enjoyed. So easy to keep turning the pages!!
Omg you mentioned that this video was coming and I've been so excited!! I need some good haunted house books in my life 👻🏚️
I had an ARC of Hum earlier this year. I loved it.
I also felt the vibes of Leave thw World Behind, at the beginning of We Used ro Live Here. Eerie vibes ❤
I’m so glad the tire thing worked out that must have been so stressful
I don’t think I have seen a single negative review for We Used to Live Here yet. I am definitely going to have to check it out.

AZ chiming in, we stayed at a bed and breakfast that had no breakfast and sooooo many bugs in the room 😱🕷️🪲🦗
We have the opposite taste in haunted house novels so I can't wait for your reading experience no matter how it turns out 🤭🩷
Just proved it once again with We Used To Live Here, which I gave 2 stars. 🤭
What perfect timing and video! 🎉
I only read We Used To Live Here and it was definetly a weird one! I was so ready for that family to just goooo 😂
Your Shadow Half Remains is one of my favorite books of the year so far! I continue my one-woman campaign for this book.
Ooooooh okay noted ✍🏻
Russel books is one of my fave bookstores
25:25 That is a little jumping spider. Have you ever seen a full-sized fishing spider? Now THAT is a pretty spider!!
