Have to make sure your bore is deep enough so it does not push up or crack the concrete or asphalt. That is easy to do if a rock is near the bore. Also, turning the back reamer the other direction may help speed up the operation.
Old school. Back in the day before we started directional drilling we used a similar method but with an angled bit on the end. We'd mark the 12 o'clock position on each stem we added. Poor man's directional drill. Worked good for getting across driveways. Could even go a full yard or so if you needed to. But I'm glad we use proper directional drills these days. :)
Right? We use 410sx's, and we use the plow and a mankiller to make a trench. Connect the rods/bit, smack the drill string down into the trench with a slight angle up from the middle forward. Put a little bow in the string and bore away. Usually with that method we can make it pop up on the otherside like a directional bore, or at the very least, not dive to more than 4 feet. We also have to do this solo sometimes, perks of the telecom industry.
