Report it to wildlife games so they send a team to your area to stop the spread of the nest. The nests are floor base if you friend stepped on it. I feel like its a strong possibility.

its a cicada killer. Males have no stingers, females do but are generally pretty docile toward people as long as your not disturbing them. and the stings themselves are basically pinpricks their not super painful. males will act aggressively if your near their territory but there's literally nothing they can actually do to hurt you its all a show
