I’m glad this came along 3 years ago when I was first required to sing 16 bars instead of a full song for auditioning. Thank you Kat, you are a LIFE SAVER
Katherine, you never let me down. I’ll be an great actor in no time. Anytime I have a question about something so simple as what is a bar of music or what should I bring to an audition, you’re always coming in clutch. So I thank you!
I think you just saved the day! I'm auditioning for an acting course, but they want 16 bars of song as well... Plus 4 monologues. I had no idea what 16 bars looked like! God bless you!!!
I'm auditioning for Sweeney Todd in two days and cannot decide on the best cutting of my audition song. I know the entire song by heart though, so if they ask to hear all of it I got it covered. This is helping so much, thank you.
Definitely look for music 16 year olds would sing, don’t be afraid of something being too old. The rule for teens is pretty much if they talk about marriage, divorce, drinking, sex and isn’t spring awakening or bare (also those are two great musicals to get rep from) don’t use it. I get a lot of my music from Joe Iconis ngl, But finding new composers helps too. Watching 54 below videos can help you find them, you don’t need obscure songs they just make ur rep a little cooler
Hey!!!!!! A while ago you helped me win an audition song for goosebumps the musical and I GOT CALLED BACK! I just thought I'd say thanks for the help❤️ you the best!
Katherine you literally just saved my LIFE. I'm an incoming college freshman who is auditioning for my university's shows in a couple of weeks. The problem is that I have NO IDEA what shows we're doing! Do you have any advice for picking songs when you're basically going into a blind audition? (I really hope it's Hunchback)
+Sami McDonald I'd recommend choosing a song that fits your casting type perfectly, shows off your best assets, hides your weaknesses, & most importantly--shows off your unique personality as a performer!! You basically have free range when it comes to picking the material, so choose what shows you off the best! 💕
This helped me with one very important thing, and that's that I'm always scared to do the last 16 bars because I feel like there's not much context to it if you don't listen to the full song. But you wanna show off what YOU can do, not how the song tells a story. Which yeah that's important, but most casting directors are professional enough to already know a majority of songs you're gonna pick
I just found out about the theatre I practice at producing Annie! I’m going to audition, it will be my first audition. I’m singing born to entertain. I hope you do good, I am also happy that people are recently still watching this video 😭
THANK YOU. I'm joking a new theatre next June and I'm not sure how their audition process works, so this is very helpful, and my school may be changing their process of auditions as well.
I have an intensive with the guy that plays Lafayette on the national tour, and I am super nervous. Anyways I was so confused bar music was, and video helped me a lot! Thank youuuu
Also I just got the role of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera do you have any advice about showing the conflicting feelings for the Phantom and Raoul?
+Katie Feduccia The way I interpreted it was always a father/daughter relationship with Phantom, so the conflict came from a place of wanting to protect him
Thank you so much!! This was very helpful!!! 😁💛 I’m going to audition for SpongeBob SquarePants at my school ! They’re doing the SpongeBob musical 😁💛🧽 The song I’m gonna audition with is “The Best Day Ever!” 💛💛 And we had to chose 16 bars and I had no idea what that was until I saw your video, so thank you so much!! This helps a lot!! 💛💛😁😁
YAY BONUS UPLOADS! I always love teaching the little kiddos this and seeing their face when they realize how easy it is! Hahah! Just as a general question, what editing software do you use? My brother usually edits everything for me but I'm heading off to college so now I have to edit things for myself...yikes. Haha! Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated!
Hello Katherine! I would really love if you did a make-up tutorial for girls who play male roles and need a more masculine face - my drama club is 95% girls, and we could use some help with characterization for the male roles. Love u ♥
could you do a video on vibrato, like how you developed it, how long it took, and maybe some tips? i did it once last week and haven't been able to do it again and i'm crushed :'(
I might audition for the nemo musical here in Orlando at Disney World. And they said to prepare 16 bars of a song but i feel like 30 seconds is way too short.
woah I'm so early! so, I'm auditioning for James and the Giant Peach, and I have no idea what to sing! Help! I was thinking Lifeboat or I Speak Six Languages (I know they're opposites lol) but I'm not limited to those two. I know you did a vid on this already but I'm super indecisive. Please please help me out! thanks and ily !!
+ImSophIGuess I did! It depends on your voice, personality, strengths, casting type, etc. 💕 the person who knows that best is you! Break a leg!! ruclips.net/video/Xx2kefqKZxM/видео.html
this is so so much later than when you uploaded this but genuine question, i'm going for an audition right now and they require a 16 bar audition cut, but also said one minute portion. i'm planning on singing a faster tempo song anyway, can i get away with 32 bar instead?
with doing the last bit of a song, would that still apply to something like I Didn't Plan It from Waitress, that starts off strong but does have more showy vocals at the end?
For one of my college pre-screens, I am required to have 2 songs that are 32 bars and a minute long. So if 32 bars of my uptempo song turned out to be around 30 seconds should I include more bars to get a full minute in there? Thanks so much! Love from Vancouver, CA!! :)
I've been watching your College Audition Advice playlist and it's been really, really helpful. Although, I was wondering: do you have an opinion on conservatories vs universities? I'm trying to decide who I want to audition for next year, and I know there are pros and cons to both but I can't decide which would be a better fit for me.
+Jordan depends on your personality, academic, & career needs! I have friends at both who love each (and I have friends who have switched as they realized they needed more or less academics).
I'm auditioning for the role of LeFou or Maurice for Beauty and the Beast. I'm doing "Dancing through Life from Wicked" as my audition song. Do you know what would be the best area of the song would be to show off my capability for the parts?
I came here cuz i think my bar is cut The song is in 4/4 but then occiasionally 5/4 or 6/4 but i cant get it to work Im sure many songs have cut bars, like they end too fast. How do i let logic know this?
I have an audition for "Working" in a few weeks and it has to be a 16 bar cut of a contemporary song BUT i'm a soprano 1 and these days it's so hard to find contemporary songs for sop1s and i chose Me And The Sky from Come From Away but they have t released sheet music so idk how much 16 bars of it is
I have an audition for meet me in st louis soon! If I am using the beggining of a song does the intro count towards the 32-48 bars I'm suppose to use?I've always been confused about that.btw love the video!👍🎬🎭

+Emu Boy happy to help!! ❤
I'm auditioning for Sweeney Todd in two days and cannot decide on the best cutting of my audition song. I know the entire song by heart though, so if they ask to hear all of it I got it covered. This is helping so much, thank you.

So I'm 13 now and I'm outgrowing my "little girl" audition material... any tips on songs to add to my rep book that suit my age?
Definitely look for music 16 year olds would sing, don’t be afraid of something being too old. +Halle Penner you can! For college auditions, I'd rec keeping your 32 cuts just under a minute 💖

I came here cuz i think my bar is cut
The song is in 4/4 but then occiasionally 5/4 or 6/4 but i cant get it to work
Im sure many songs have cut bars, like they end too fast. How do i let logic know this?
do you have a video on what voice types are/mean? like soprano, tenor, alto and those kinda things
hey ik this is an old video, but what would be a good contrasting song to go with much more from fantastiks? thanks and love your vids!!
I'd say something super contemporary with pop/rock vibes
Katherine Steele tysm!!
Katherine Steele i was thinking maybe nothing short of wonderful from dogfight or when he sees me from waitress!!

if a bar only has rests, does that still count as a bar?
+Katherine Steele
I am a musician and I knew what a measure was but I have NEVER heard of a bar before... I am dumb :/
im not sure if you still respond or if anyone else will but when im doing an audition and they ask for 32 bars and theres an instrumental part in between those do i cut them out of the 32?
The information starts at 1:00
