This toy was from my childhood! I remember being scared of this toy as a kid and i had a nightmare of it staring at me under my bed and it was eating my feet, My aunt still has the toy but it's battery is low and possessed.
ENTMan98 i own one of each generation, and they both had issues with those wires, the older one's wires completely got cut(they went into the side of the head mech, but they were too thick) and the one featured in the video, as i said, kept splitting the gear over and over after i would glue it back on the shaft, the only good solution i found is use thin wires and put them through the side of the neck like the big base ones, and once it's out of that hole i just soldered the thicker wire to it, there's a video on my channel that explains that issue with the newer one
Another issue (or design fault) is the mouth, the white piece that attaches to the head has a cylinder, and it's a little bit too tall, so the mouth piece hits against it and that limits the mouth a little. I sanded that off and replaced the little piece of adhesive sponge and it seems to make a difference

You're probably right. The reduction in base size was likely to reduce the cost of freight (ie. cube size).

I hate how they fitted those wires for the mouth in these ones... They end up making the crown gear split due to an unnecessary effort
I know! One of the wires was severed internally (beyond the insulation) in mine!
