- Check out this journey of opening up a USA Trains FEF-3 die-cast locomotive and tender. This particular locomotive represents UP 844 when it was painted in the greyhound scheme and labeled UP 8444.

I love the model 844 you have. 844 looks different and funny without smoke deflectors
The way the train was fully packaged it’s like a fancy train in a special box and crate
So just for anyone that wanna know, so the multiple covers on the tender that are towards the back is the water refill and the one by itself that is closer to the engine is the fuel (oil)
Totally awesome pieces of craftsmanship.
The detailing is "eye candy" .
The shipping and storage cases are nicely built to protect those beauties,top drawer all the way.

MTH and USA Trains also did Challengers and BigBoys in 1 gauge.
I have an O gauge 8444 and I must say without the elephant ears it looks nice especially with that UP Greyhound scheme..

Great product. Unfortunate that the bell sound does NOT go with that locomotive. 16 ft. minimum radius, somebody has to have a huge RR to run it on. Still all-in-all, super locomotive.
100% agree with you. That's the biggest problem I have with this locomotive (and I don't own one... yet). The factory-loaded sound parameters do not at all correspond to the actual sounds of UP 844, and that bothers me every time I see it run... but it's still a great locomotive to see running at the head of a train.
It couldn't be any nicer!
Of course, keep the box and all the packaging.

Those shrouds are called 'smoke deflectors' which keep the smoke away from the cab.
The 8444 was more commonly spoken as "Eighty-Four Forty-Four," not 'Eight Four Four Four.'

Beautiful train !! I have question for you, when you have ran the engine and had the cylinder smoke switch on did it smoke for you when the train stop , it’s supposedly to automatic when the engine stops, I just got the 844 version and I had rays electric train works make dcs and dcc and if you watch the video here made its great but the shipping seem to knock the wicks out of the cylinders, otherwise beautiful engine and made well. Enjoy it! And let me know if they worked for you.🙂
We actually didn't try to run the smoke on 8444; neither one of us is a big user of the stuff, and we didn't have any fluid on hand. We did test the smoke unit without fluid just to see if it would put out hot air at least, and it seemed to work fine.
@@GardNRailCrucible if you try that more often it will no longer work. Without oil the wick melts down because it gets too hot.
I switch over to a Bridgewerks power, so you can control the volts to the USA engine! It has made a great difference in running the engine and better on controlling on the smoke unit on not burning out the wicks, I would recommend running all your engines on it!!
I wish many more people would do this thing where they film the unboxing of these konda of trains

Pretty cool. Ive always thought of getting into GScale but the sound level always seems to disappoint me. My O gauge stuff is louder than most G scale I’ve heard
The stock speakers are usually crap many of us upgrade our speakers
To be fair, I'm not a big fan of G scale sound myself; much prefer to just let the engines and consists run as-is. The stock sound system is impressive for what it is (and we didn't try to max out the volume, either, at least not that I know of), but it's a real pain to access on the FEF-3s from USA Trains. You basically have to remove the entire boiler shell. No thank you. I've tried N scale units from Athearn and BLI that have sound on board; was not impressed with them either in terms of their quality, but I was impressed that they got semi-reasonable sound out of so tiny a system.

What diameter track does this require? And how heavy is it?
16ft minimum diameter track, and as for weight, the total unit together exceeds 40 pounds.
I wish G scale had scale knuckle couplers
Seriously. That's been one of the biggest issues I've seen over the last six-plus years of doing G scale: a lack of uniformity in couplers. Sure, most of the coupler styles can be made to work together with a little work, but the absence of a standard design is really bothersome.
@@GardNRailCrucible Why are there no scale G scale metal couplers? Ho.. yes, 1/8 scale… yup, G scale…. Fail.
@@3006USMC USA Trains offers a form of body-mount metal coupler on their Extruded Aluminum passenger cars, while they have a truck-mounted metal coupler for some of the Ultimate Series lines like their 4-bay covered hoppers and the 29-, 42-, and 55-foot tank cars. As far as everything else? Yeah, bit of a fail there's no G scale couplers available, lol.

My friend paid $3800 not including shipping for this locomotive. Hefty price, yes, but the quality is so worth it.
Some G gauge trains are in 1:24th scale. Is this?
This one is 1:29, along with all the rolling stock it’s pulled since being unboxed. My friend who owns this locomotive has maybe one or two pieces of 1:24 G Scale rolling stock; I have two pieces I rarely use, and neither of us have seriously considered any of the 1:32 (such as MTH) or 1:24.3 (Bachmann) options because we both fell into 1:29 quickly enough that changing or doing a lot of mixing scales didn’t suit either of us.

$3800 USD. Very expensive, yes, but a superb locomotive.
Why didn't they make it live steam?
Too many potential problems with live steam, not to mention that a foray into live steam is what helped to kill Polk/Aristo-Craft back in the 00s. Live steam seems like it's far more niche than G scale; probably nowhere near enough potential profit in it.

Try smoke deflector, not shroud. The trim is yellow.

Yeah, the price tag is on a different level. And then there’s the 16ft diameter curves it requires… big engine, big price, big space.

@@GardNRailCrucible welp I gotta plan for some wider curves then. Sharpest curves on my railway are 14 foot diameter, but I’d rather have 20 foot diameter minimum.

Gorgeous, but who the hell has the money or the space to run something like this?!
Lol, I'll tell you who has the money and the space: there's some folks (mostly retirees) in Arizona who have a truly colossal outdoor layout that they setup a club to run and operate. For the rest of us, we make do with what we can, which in the case of myself and my friend, we setup temporary layouts in basements, leave it up for a few days or a couple of weeks, and then take it down and put it all away until the next big opportunity to take it out and have some fun. It's a monumental undertaking (especially for 16-foot diameter circles) but it's usually worth the effort.
I see many people with beautiful long layouts on You Tube where this would feel right at home,Outdoors.
Is G scale plastic
Most of it is, but some of it is not. Most locomotives and rolling stock are plastic shells and frames, but this particular locomotive is die-cast metal all the way through.
