Just a summarizing note on the AI talk: I think there´s a problem when quantizing and AI is used for comfort instead of artistic choice. It´s like fleeing out of the humane factor that is performance therefore cheating on the listener. It will diminish or render the experience insignificant, just like Steve said. The summarizing part of it is: Trying to be a machine or hoping on a protecting effect will not create a happy experience. Having courage will be recognized. By some at least.
Always a breath of fresh air. Even though when you boil down his philosophies and approach, it’s all about basics. Keep it simple, build a good foundation, and above all remember why you’re doing it in the first place...fun, relationships and pursuit of passion. Thanks for this great engagement!
J K if you are saying he’s a great engineer suffering from the Dunning Kruger effect when it comes to politics as Noam is then yes I agree , Orange Man Bad don’t cut it among actual intellectuals
I literally was just listening to this video, thinking to myself that Steve has a similar vocal cadence to Noam Chomsky (along with the intellect, obviously), and then I scroll down and see this comment. Go figure.
@@gorryman apparently "actual intellectuals" are perfectly comfortable swearing undying allegiance to a man of low character and no morals. Aristotle would weep.
This is a fantastic interview. Thank you for sharing this. I operate and own Frequency Recording in Ny and do business in a similar manner to Steve. I don't have any patience for tape so we are using Pro Tools as a recording medium with an analog console.
it's funny as hell that he specifically explains throughout the interview that he doesn't consider himself a producer and doesn't want that title, and ya still went ahead and called him a producer anyway lol
I've never considered 'punchy' to be a good thing when describing recording. Makes me think of all of the overproduced 80's style stuff with gated reverb on the drums and just in-your-face vocals/guit/bass/keys/horns. Although I do hear it all the time to describe what some people think is awesome.
One of the only analog studios in my town listened to 10 seconds of my band's demo before saying 'This is a family studio.' I think it was code for, your band is scary and probably unwholesome.

Holy fuck, I love Steve Albini. I could listen to him speak for days. Not only an interesting guy, but a total expert.
And yeah, it's not something I judge a person by, but his credibility in the underground music scene is next to none really.

Thank God he's around for the small independant bands like mine.
Steve Albini is the Noam Chomsky of the music industry.

He done insinuated himself into the music scene.

Is it just me or does Steve look like Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) in Stand By Me all grownup.

Doesn't Albini refer to himself as a recording engineer not as a producer?
