TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE 2018 OVER THE SWISS ALPS - 4K timelapse & real-time

  • On July 27th 2018, most of Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and South-America witnessed the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. For 103 minutes the moon passed completely into Earth's shadow. The outer edges of the Earth refract the sunlight and cast a red-orange color onto the moon (much like a sunset): thetas why we call it blood moon.
As clouds were announced for the Gex region in France, I had to travel 2 hours south-east to the Swiss Valais (Wallis) to find decent skies and backgrounds. After a 20 minute hike on location, I quickly found a nice spot and decided to set up my cameras there to start shooting the eclipse as the moon was starting to rise behind the mountains already in totality. However that location was windy and you might see some bumps here and there! (Sorry about that!)
The blood moon is very hard to film in real-time because of its extremely low light in comparison to a full moon. When it rose, I used the Sony a7rII with the Sigma 150-500mm f4-6.3 and shot at 1/25'', ISO 3200, f6.3 and 500mm but I realized only afterwards that it was way noisy. I switched to the super 35mm crop function where noise is handled better, but the first two real-time shots of this film were not that satisfactory. As a consequence I decided to switch to timelapse, which would enable me to use linger shutter speeds and lower ISOs.
I really wanted to get a view of the eclipsed moon and the milky way, as it is the only time where our home galaxy is viewable in its full glory under any phase of the moon! I also love the shot of the full totality moon and the stars moving above the snow-capped mountain barely visible in the foreground. It's really nice to have had such a long eclipse, which enabled me to take some really good timelapse footage!
Around 23:00 LT the moon got out of totality and a veil of cirrus clouds took over before storm clouds got the best of the landscape.
Everything was recorded with the Sony a7rII, Sony a7s and Canon 6D, as well as a wide variety of lenses (Sigma, Samyang) ranging from 14 to 500mm. Motion created using the Vixen Polarie. In the UK we have had nothing but clear skies for ages. Had my camera gear all set up and nothing could be seen due to cloud cover, was gutted. Great footage mate, awesome job.
