- 8/7/09: Cause of Jay Bennett's death (5/24/09) was an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl according to livedaily.com. I hope it brings some closure to ones closest to him.
In Aug 1999, Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett of Wilco stopped by the Austin Music Network (AMN) to play a couple of tunes that would air on the AMN music video show, "rock.alt". This is a cover of the 1927 Richard "Rabbit" Brown song "James Alley Blues".
AMN started broadcasting in 1994 on Time Warner cable channel 15 and went off-air in Aug 2005 due to lack of advertising funding. During it's time, it was the only city-sponsored, non-profit music channel in the world. Видеоклипы
I thought Jay was a musical genius. When I saw them play in Kansas City I couldn't take my eyes off of the guy. He was truly a gifted entertainer. R.I.P. Jay. You are missed..
Wilco may be Tweedy, but the Wilco of today exists as it does thanks largely to Jay Bennett. I love the current incarnation, but wish things could have turned out differently for Jay. The guy was a genius. What a shame.
Agreed
Yes, it’s heartbreaking what happened. Jay Bennett was a true genius. Some rare magic that cannot be replaced.
Really a wonderful performance. Jay Bennett was just a goldmine of talent, not a front man I guess and probably with his demons, but just as talented a musician as you'll come across.
“Sometimes I think that you’re too sweet to die. And other times I think that you outta be buried alive...” powerful.
Jay is such a great musician. I love his piano playing more than anything. It always complements Jeff's vocal so perfectly. R.I.P.
such a great artist. he deserved more than this. RIP Jay
I miss Jay. He was the light of my days for a long time.
This is a brilliant video. While I still love Wilco's music, and think the current band is phenomenal, I don't think they've made a truly satisfying album since Jay's departure. Jay's ability to bring music to life was critical in the band's development. Had he not been there, Wilco would be a totally different band today.
totally agree.
I agree, too. They've gotten boring. It's like Paul McCartney without John Lennon.
I think they’ve had several satisfying albums since Jay, but the style has certainly changed, and I miss his inspiration in Wilco’s music.
I have to admit I was a latecomer to Wilco, the first time I heard them was on YHF.
I haven't been too impressed with the music since. It's lost a lot heart, the subtleness that really made you listen and feel the emotion of the song. All of that ended after Jay was fired from the band.
Yes, Jeff and crew will still turn out decent records. But nothing like this. Those days are unfortunately gone now. RIP Jay.
Beautiful song. Rest In Peace Jay Bennett.
Jay you are missed to this day and beyond. I and I shed respect in I and I tears for I brethren. The music lives on and makes us smile. Thanks for the post. Jah Bless.
just a great song.
this is magic!!! Miss ya Jay! The Palace at 4 a.m. (Part I) never leaves my phone
This is awesome. Thank you so much for posting. The good old days.
I've been a Wilco fan since AM and believe they were and are still great. Jay brought a ton to their creativity and I do not say it is better...it is different and Wilco keeps evolving. Enough of the BS that one era is better than another...they're not Van Halen people!
Man, I remember AMN here in austin. That channel hooked me onto other great music at the time. Deerhunter, Interpol, ... And You Will know us by the Trail of Dead. It's awesome that Wilco was on the channel. I miss the old Austin. There was more charm and authenticity.
This is amazing....I've never seen this!!!💗
Tweedy has the best ear for obscure covers ever. Genius.
Summer teeth and YHF were my two favs also. Got to see them in Milwaukee on the YHF tour that summer. Unforgettable!
I think this performance encompasses what was great between Jay and Jeff. Jay knew how to complement the songs in the right way. Jay in my opinion wasn't as good of a songwriter, but he definitely helped to make Jeff's songs as good as they could be. For me, and I don't mean to step on any toes here, Yankee hotel is Jay Bennett, and Yankee hotel is wilco's best record.
Maybe I'm a sucker for the simple stuff. Wilco sounded so much better when Jeff sang and there was MUSIC, not endless guitar solos behind him. Thanks so much for posting this!
Shortly after Jay Bennett "was fired"/left the band Jeff went to rehab and Jay ended up dead. They may have made great music together, but it is obvious that they were not good for each other. For those who think/complain that Wilco is only making OK records today - at least your getting records. Jeff was able to seek help. Jay didn't.
Although, Jay was supposedly not using drugs when he died; his death was deemed accidental due to a leaky fentanyl patch for a bad hip he couldn't afford to get fixed. Jeff DID fire him, but you are right--Jeff was also worried that Jay was dragging him down. He had fantasies of falling asleep while on Vicodin and not waking up.
This might be my favorite video on RUclips.
Jesus, amazing stuff
Great clip. I've never seen that one before.
RIP Jay.
Masterful blues playing
this is incredibly beautiful
Meh
over a year now, i loved jay. I know nels is agreat guiter player and Wilco goes on.
I loved being there for years, then Yankee Hotel had to really grow on me, but when it did, MAN. The best album ever, I know they had there time together and all things end. You can never take what Jay put into the albums and the band away, he was huge in the writing with Jeff then.
Just Great
i love this song. the end.
They played alot of Being There and Trot last night along with everything else..Disagree with you abit..The evolution of Wilco with every album has become nothing less than brilliant..To constantly change and be revelant to fans like myself who still remember the first time they played on the Foxtrot tour is rewarding and refreshing. There's really one 2 bands that come to mind in the last 15 yrs who keep pushing the envelope with success. Wilco and Radiohead....
Wilco will always be a great band because Jeff Tweedy is a great musician and song writer, and the band and him will never be mutually exclusive. That being said, their live performances have definitely changed without the presence of Jay Bennett and Wilco live without Jay has lost a certain edge that I certainly miss. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is and will forever be one of the greatest records ever made, and Jay will always be a part of it. He'll always live on through it, and everything/everyone else he touched. R.i.P. Jay!
Heavy
my elemantary school music teacher used that model piano haha
just remembering Jays brilliance....
I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. This performance is absolutely beautiful.
@73ccougar The name is this song is James Alley Blues. :0) It's an old Rabbit Brown cover.
5*. Without Bennett, Wilco can tend to be boring. I love the dynamic from the piano here.
@kennedy4uofa I love Nels and agree he's a genius. I can't imagine the band without him today. Within the past year I've seen him with 3 bands - Wilco, the Singers and also with Jenny Scheinman's band. I do think the post-Jay albums are lacking something - something they do find when they play live.
well, I'm convinced
Another unwilling but genius pairing. I'm the biggest Wilco fan there is, but they miss the musical virtuoso of Jay Bennett. He added layers along with basic hard rockin' they just miss.
Where can I find that shirt?
I fucking hate fentanyl.
Wilco was best with Bennett
wilcos high point was yankee hotel foxtrot and everything before it...although i still love the band and enjoy the albums nothing comes close to being there, summerteeth and yhf ...so yeah jay definitely was a big loss to wilco and now to the music world
i still like wilco but i do think they took a step back when jay bennett left, though he didnt write the songs, he did write the music for most of being there, summerteeth, and yankee foxtrot hotel, and i think you can notice that in Ghost is Born, i still like it, i would give it 4 out of 5 stars, where yankee foxtrot, summerteeth, being there i would give a 4.5 to 5 for all of them, i do think that i have liked each new ablum progessive less. jay bennett leaving was important for me
Wilco
Jay is my uncle
Hey Luke, Jay was a good friend of mine. You ever in the SF Bay area look me up and I'll tell you some great stories.
well your uncle is my hero
@@TheNaturalust I wish you would tell me,Jay was and is a huge inspiration
Jay will be forever a hero of music
absolutely. and now he's dead so there's no chance that wilco will ever go back to being great.
dude,,, i shot this. - chris,,, madmex.
James Alley Blues. Its not obscure.
Wilco was a better band with Jay Bennett. As much as I LOVED Wilco I never listen to Down With Wilco on. Most of that stuff seems shallow and uninspired. Maybe I just tired of Tweedy's schtick.
the wrong guy died
Dick
Rather harsh, don't you think?
@@fourthmusketeer221 Inappropriate for sure.
