I was shocked and delighted to discover this gem. I had the immense privilege of knowing him personally through his son, my dear lifelong friend Justin. In addition to his superb piano virtuosity, and of more importance to me, Sidney was a truly civilized man...knowledgable about any number of subjects and brilliant without the slightest pretence. He was loved not only by his students but also by scientists, gas station attendants, used car salesmen and me, the son of a small town dentist.
Thank you for posting this marvelous performance by Distinguished Professor of Piano at Indiana University, Sidney Foster, the first winner of the Leventritt Prize. This performance has many subtle nuances of expression that make it a joy to hear.
@@bvbwv3 What a pleasant surprise to get your message! I see you have posted many lovely recordings yourself. That is exciting to see available so many recordings of the great artist Balint Vazsonyi, and I am looking forward to hearing them. I was intrigued as well to see some recordings by a pianist named Whittington, as that name reminds me of Mr Vazsonyi's wife's name before marriage. I came across the above recording by Sidney Foster when I was looking for online sources to teach my piano literature class this semester, which had to be done online since the middle of March. It is wonderful how many resources are now available on the internet! I have two LP discs of Mr. Vazsonyi in my own collection, but am now very happy to learn of so many performances available online!
@@bvbwv3 That's what I was suspecting, but there didn't seem to be a way of knowing for sure! How great to be back in touch. And the pianist, named Whittington didn't seem to be living anymore, - was that your mother or father?
@@davidbrunell408 Father. My mother was a pianist also, though. After changing computers, all contact info was lost so I no longer have your email. Perhaps you have mine, still?
Best performance I’ve found so far! I found this piece in one of my 40 year old lesson books and I am going to learn it. I’m a new fan of Selim Palmgren. Now a follower of Sidney Foster!

He’s one of my favorite pianists. Thanks for sharing this!
So beautifully performed and with grace. I can see the moon shimmering in the May Night. Outstanding performance and so calm and relaxed.

DAVID!! How lovely to read your words - and beautifully expressed, too. Please get in touch.
