The first thing you need to know is skatepark etiquette. Normally, riders will take a path across the park where they hit a few ramps and then rest for a minute on the other side. This is called a line. When you go out on the ramps you should know what line you want to take first. Crashes usually happen when someone is riding in an unpredictable way, or ignoring the lines that other people are taking. Be considerate, and observe the skatepark before you jump into the mix. After you watch for a bit, you’ll have a much better idea of what line to take, and who to keep an eye on. Like that scooter kid who just finished his 4th mountain dew.
Next, you’re going to need to learn how to ride quarter pipes. We’ll assume you’ve already been messing around on your BMX in the street, so it shouldn’t be too hard for you to ride up and down a mellow quarter pipe just by turning around. You’ll quickly grow comfortable with the transition and work your way higher and higher up the quarter. As you move on to bigger quarters, you’ll want to practice hopping slightly to turn around. While turning around on an embankment requires a bunnyhop, you don’t need to do this on a quarter. Just pull your bike towards your body slightly, and you’ll feel it leave the ramp. Eventually, you’ll be able to get your front wheel over the top, and then your back wheel. Now you’re airing out.
Next, you can learn to ride more efficiently by pumping. Kind of like a swing set or a rocking horse, pumping is how you’ll gain speed on ramps by shifting your weight around instead of pedaling. As you go up or down a ramp, you want to shift your weight back in sync with the transition. You’ll know you have it figured out when you can start at the bottom of a miniramp, and work your way up higher and higher without pedaling. You’ll find that pumping is very easy to learn. It’s a lot more fun than pedaling, and it gives you way more style points.
Once you’ve gotten pretty comfortable with pumping and riding quarter pipes, you should learn to drop in from the deck. Again, starting on a small one first is probably the best way to learn. Notice the metal piping at the top. This is called coping. The trick to dropping in is to ride parallel to the coping and turn into the ramp. Because coping can sometimes be slippery, I recommend actually lifting your front wheel over it a bit. By dropping in parallel to the coping with your wheel turned, you avoid needing to nosedive into the ramp to make your transition. In fact, you’ll pretty much end up in the same position you would if you were just riding up and down the quarter.
Now, you’re going to want to get back on to the deck so you can take a break. By throwing your body forwards as you ride up the quarter, you can get your bike over the coping and on to the deck. You can put a foot out to get back on to the deck, but go a little faster and you can do a fly out. Fly outs are really fun, and they’re actually one of the best ways to learn tricks since they send you straight up and straight down. Since you’re basically going 0 mph when you land, it’s easier to pull off tricks without executing them perfectly. Learn fly outs on small quarters, and work your way up to the big ones.
If you have pegs, you may also want to learn how to stall on the coping. First, get comfortable with dropping in from your pegs. To do this, throw your body weight over the center of the ramp, and then immediately turn your front wheel to roll back in. If you don’t center your weight over the ramp first, you’re just going to end up sliding down the ramp sideways. Commit to throwing your weight over the ramp, and the rest will come naturally. Dropping in from pegs is actually easier than dropping in from the deck. Learn this, and then work on your stalls.
Start by riding up the quarter and carving towards the coping. Make sure your pegs are getting above the coping, and then push your bike off to the side. At this point, you should be using your momentum to bring your body over the center of the coping. If you can’t quite get this part, it’s easy to just turn your front wheel and drop back in. This is probably what will end up happening the first few times, but I find that the worst that will happen is that you slide down the ramp or need to drop back in. Find your balance point, and you’ll be stalling in no time.
love that you're chirping on scooter kids!
it's a biker thing, Adam LZ does that to haha

Donik Wolf yes
Ikr execpt at my fav skatepart ik that ive been to the scooter kids are everywhere bu not too bad.
And IN your way
Great video! I like how you broke those tricks down, seeing them done as a whole makes them look hard to learn, but the way you show makes them look much more learnable. I've been riding since I was a kid, I even had a few BMX's, but all we did was ride them on dirt. No parks or jumps. Now after watching this, at 37yo I kind of want to pick up a BMX and try this shit, it looks like fun!
Haha I would be soo pissed if I did that to my sprocket ! I have a 4 mile ride to my closest skate park and back
That's nothing compared to me, the nearest skatepark is an hour-long drive
I have to drive as well
Ive been watching ur videos for a while and they've really helped me out, thanks Seth ;)
This is really helpful, thank you! I started today having not ridden for 10 years and I'm finding it terrifying! Practised dropping in some ramps that weren't too steep, havent attempted dropping in to quarters with coping but that will hopefully come tomorrow. Then getting up them will be the next step! Spent a lot of time at the top of ramps counting to 3 today 😆 great tips bro
I've been riding for half a year and this is exactly what I was looking for.
i love how i was like man this guy probably is in cali but you live in my neighborhood 😂😂😂
I don't know who dislikes your movies. I love all your stuff
These type of videos are amazing! They’re helping a lot keep it up
the kids will love this!
"like that scooter kid who finished his fourth mountain dew"
truth hurts.
Yo! Piccolo! Grew up there hahaha. Totally gonna go hit it up after watching this at work!
44 and getting back into it... Your vids are ace! Thanx man ;-)
My local skatepark is literally two quarter pipes, and a stack of pallets.
Mine is 1 really steep bank with a quarter pipe in front of it, but really far apart, 1 big manual pad with 2 levels, 1 low rail and 2 small ramps looking at each other creating a 2-3 foot gap
Great video Seth, thanks for sharing. :)
That 360 whip is so smooooth..
Pretty damn awesome thank you I'm 50 years old and I've been riding and been active and of course my bones are aging but my inspiration is not aging so I'm going to try at the park nearby my house that I discovered
Nice! You should do a video on riding pump tracks, they're one of my favorite things to ride.
Great commenting, great music, great atmosphere, great video.
Gonna start rocking the road helmet at the park thanks to you :)
Great video series. You explain things very well. Off to the skate park to practice!
Thanks! Quick and easy to follow.

This video help me so much with my bmx bike I got for Christmas ❤️
Thanks for posting all your videos! I am a mountain bike skills coach and it's nice to see another perspective on teaching - much appreciated! ...Gotta say your riding and pumping a half pipe, not a quarter - just to clarify for any nubes out there... Ride on!
Thanks! To be more specific, that is "miniramp". I try to keep it simple though and just refer to each side as a quarter. By the way... how do you become a mountain bike skills coach? I want that job!

Seth, how about a vid on riding a typical mtb at a skatepark. What you can and can not/should not try. Been messing around at my local park on my slack hardtail. Keep up great work.

Seth, if you make more BMX videos, can you explain more about the handling and body positioning? I've noticed people hold the bmx bars really in the center. I used to ride bmx years ago and didnt hold it that way. Now I ride downhill but i want to go back to bmx.

Hey Seth I've watched a few of your videos and I wanted to ask if you knew of any parks or like dirt jumps/trails in the central Florida area that I can bring my BMX to. I wanted to get back into it and would like to do more park riding and potentially some dirt riding
Is that a Tropic Lightning shirt? Were you part of the 25th Infantry at one time or another?
sometimes, when i ride in a bowl's walls, my front tire lifts up and i almost fall, should i be putting more weight to the front, or try and keep it equal?
Believe me everyone at my skatepark is riding unpredictable
Thanks for that l am not that good but now l will be l am saving up my new bmx
when you go up to a quarter pipe or half pipe and do a 180 to come back down do you just bunnyhop like on flat? do you turn first then bunnyhop to get the last bit of air back down??
