- 800 years before the birth of Jesus, nomadic war-like people took root and rose in central Europe. Their world was awash with benign spirits and demonic forces. While they built temples, nature was their cathedral. Like many other civilizations in the ancient world, they worshipped a sun god and mother goddess, and the afterlife was an extension of the virgin vitality of their life on earth. The druids were the priests and magistrates who held their world together and performed secret rituals and sacrifices. To the classical civilizations of their day, they were barbarians, at their gates to haunt their dreams. And yet, they would create art in metal that would rival that of Rome and Greece. Masters of the horse and of iron, they were the Celts.
From a time before time was first measured, humankind has pondered the question of God. As the image of that god formed in their mind, they fashioned it in wood, paint and stone and housed it in holy places. The ancient world was populated with gods beyond counting. Today, just one God dominates the world of believers. Where have the old gods gone? Our quest is to peel away the layers of time to examine the civilizations that brought the gods to power and honoured them with art and architecture and to discover the ultimate fate of the Lost Gods.

Being Scottish I was brought up on tales of the Picts and possibly a thousand more historical tales, myself and my brothers always knew where we came from, I can't speak for the Irish but our rich history was taught in primary school with each lesson you could feel your pride grow but nothing made me more proud than knowing that our Pict warriors were enough to make even Rome think twice, they built a wall not to keep us in but to keep our raiding parties out! That they were probably what happened to the 9th, I don't think all of the 9th were killed, I think survivors chose to live with the Picts rather than go back and shamed for their failure....I feel great sadness at the loss of our Gods for a religion that was never our own.
There are so many academic and very well researched documentaries out there about the Celtic Peoples. This is not one of them.

Took way too long to mention the Celtic spiritual advisers. Rather tired of this human sacrifice propaganda. There was capital punishment and there would be a spiritual act of some kind involved as with last rights and such. And Druids were involved. But that in no way means it was a Human Sacrifice. At the point where Rome was in what is now the UK, they had just outlawed Human Sacrifice and its all politics...Ceaser had his own cultural ideas and political plotting to do. Divination but entrails was a Roman practice...they practised Haruspicy. I do not know of any records showing a tradition of Haruspicy in Celtic Cultures.
Thank you!! This frustrates me so much when I try to learn more about Celtic culture. I heard that Caesar made up some shit about them way back when and that's part of how the druids "sacrificing humans" propaganda was perputated. They're portrayed as barbaric pagans with few morals and I wish more documentaries or videos like this were neutral.
This channel is pure christian propaganda. This video is nothing at all close to reliable. In fact it is borderline religious discrimination it is so blatantly misrepresenting Celtic culture. If the people were still alive it would be a criminal act - a literal civil rights violation in the usa =)) There are very good and unbiased youtubers making great academic and accurate videos about European history. See Fortress of Lugh for example.
The nature and meaning of sacrifice is entirely different now and then. What is modern warfare now but sacrifice to the state that sets themselves up as god's? It's not to society, it's secular and there is no tribe only the false worship of the state/corporation. Sacrifice then meant just that and you don't give what is of most value to the tribe unless you are desperate, the irony being Caesar was probably the cause of any human sacrifice that did happen and was the beginning of the false worship of state. People say the word but have no idea of the meaning.
That's because there is no records of the celtic people by the celtic people there os no evidence that they did or didn't sacrifice people and your comment looks like cope 'it may be an execution' you don't know I don't know nobody knows and I can't understand how it frustrates you so much that a culture we know next to nothing about is not properly represented

If you want to learn just a little bit about Celtic history and culture, and you're able to put up with annoying, overly flashy editing, then this is for you. "Lost Gods"? More like "Old White Guy Talks About Cultural Development and Architecture". The most they do is describe burial practices and name a few gods.

Why does he fade in and out so often while walking around? I really like his narrative but the fading bores me. And it's not needed to bring the history across, rather the opposite. Actually the entire pacing around amongst the buildings could be left out completely.

How did they discover that salt was a preservative? Seems an odd thing to do to put your meat in a load of salt and leave it there.
Various animals like salt. Someone saw an animal licking some salt. Decided to try it and liked it. It's always good to check on what other animals eat and do not eat. People were always pulverizing things so since it tasted good, they put it on various foods. One day, someone forgot about the leftovers, but for some reason, they had not spoiled yet. Tthat;s my personal theory.
Ancient Egyptian used it in mummification. So I guess it was commonly known?

Probably not many, without modern science their Gods/Goddesses explained the world around them.
There were people in the ancient Greek and Roman intellectual circles who were, at best, ambivalent about the concept of gods and their powers so it's not unreasonable to assume there were ancient atheists. It's just not going to be something you talk about much in a highly superstitious society/culture

There were druids in Ireland and Pictland. Celts in Central Europe were overtaken by Germanic tribes.
Apparently a celt took some Greeks to Ireland and fought and the Irish made a truce that's were the fairy and elves originated as they were happy to live in the inner world

DNA clarified, Now we know the Irish, Welsh, and some of the Scotts, were Basque, the Scott-Pics were Scythians, one of the Tribes of Israel. The Dannites also made up a the early Irish. I feel they may have been Basque to begin with.
Celts, not certain just who they were, but they must have influenced the region.
My DNA (Country Kerry Lineage) supports the Basque + Rh(-), Askanazy Jew, Blonde, Olive Green eyes, (German cause Mom had to go and marry one that was only half Irish) the gene pool + my Husband's certainly gave me a son tall and gorgeous, his Dad an O(-) was absolutely the most gorgeous man I ever saw, on and off screen, like a sculpture.
