When I started cruising decades ago, the vast majority of the stewards, waiters, and assistants crew were anchor crew members. Same for engineering and deck crews. There were there to support folks at home. Back then the casino and shop were almost always English and you had a mix of the types, with the younger ones there for adventure and the older ones and mangers were there for the long run. Most officers were Greek or Nordic unless you were sailing a national cruise line like Cunard or French. The one difference is that the ship officers were much more gregarious and you would see them out at the bar and disco. You would see the young officers out dancing and having a good time. I think the big difference is that the ships weren’t billion dollar investments and cruise lines weren’t huge businesses with strict regulations and controls. The crew was often trying to have a good time with the passengers. And yes, cruising is very different for both passengers and crew. What was fine then is no longer OK. It just is what it is. But the 80s and early 90s were a blast on these smaller, much less regimented ships. They let us passengers do things that would get us thrown off at the next port without issue. There are many stories that could be told.
I've come across so many drifters, i was so glad to get out of my industry before I became one. Really enjoyed this video Lucy. Long live the navigator. 😄
Sadly I think my aunt was a drifter. Worked on cruise ships for over 30 years and always told me how much she hated it when she was between contracts, but she kept going back. Died a year after she retired.
Thank you Lucy for a very enlightening video. I enjoyed it immensely. I think similar categories can be found within land based industries. I enjoy your videos as I am now retired and will never work again, they have become sort of academic to me….which pleases me a lot! My career started when I was eighteen and finished at seventy two. There were lots of ups and downs during that time but I have no regrets. All the best for the future from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Love this, thanks so much Lucy! Would be really interested in a video on how to stay fit and healthy on a cruise ship, if you'd be up for sharing! Physical and mental health, seems a tricky thing to prioritise what with limited fresh veg diet etc!
Il be joining a ship soon in housekeeping, I'm just curious if you could make a video with a little bit more details about the position in general..or does anyone know a RUclipsr that works that position on Cruse ships and makes similar content? ..I'm curious in finding out more about the experience they had.
Congrats on joining a ship! Fyi, Lucy uploaded a detailed interview with housekeeping member, on Aug 7, 2022. Have a look. I hope this helps? Fair winds and Good Luck!
@@CruisingAsCrew I was offered a contract on Harmony, Freedom and Navigator and just couldn't bring myself to do it. My number 1 complaint was sharing a tiny cabin with another dude
Thanks so much Lucy 🎉🎉 Very helpful!! Could you please make a video just about working on a cruise ship as a spa therapist, for steiner? (Daily routine, self care, tips for working in spa and with customers etc.) I'm training to be one (cidesco holistic massage) and will apply to work on cruise next year so the more information given, the better 😂 Wish you all the best + love ❤
Tammy, you're in luck --- 'cuz Lucy has not only already made a couple videos on working for steiner / in the on-board spa...but she has 12 videos in a playlist right here on her youtube channel, dealing with this subject! 😀 Have a look. Wishing you good luck with your on-board career!
@@TammyNguyen-2705 Yeah, that's the "problem" with Lucy's videos, she has so much info in them, you might have to take notes! Ha ha😀(not like the usual youtube drivel!) Good luck to you!
Lucy, Thanks for another nice informative video! Yep, I think you're a "navigator"...and if you'd stayed on-board, you'd be on your way to being a "captain" in short order! Hmmm, Captain Lucy? Sounds good to me! 😀Continue to explore / live an adventurous life! Fair winds sweetie! (P.S. I'm having email issues...so look out, ha ha...)
Hi Lucy. Great Content❤. thank you. Pls advise if you may. I am due to start mu first contract in two weeks. However, I just received a better offer for a senior position from another cruiseline. Do i go ahead with my assignment now and then join the other ship when i get an LOE? Or do i wait for the LOE from the better offer. Im confused. what are my options?
arnie, Congrats on your first contract! Go for it! Have fun and Good luck! FYI, my personal opinion is you should stand by your word, and proceed with your contract with company "a"! Lucy may have her own cruiseship-centric view on this? (that may be different than mine?) But, I can give you a business-view...from employer point-of-view....from a moral, ethical point-of-view....and from a seafarer / mariner point-of-view. From a business-point-of-view, proceed with the contract from company "a" that you are supposed to start in 2 weeks! No question in my mind. While, if you have not yet actually signed your contract, nor any letter of intent, and company "a" (that you are due to start working on-board with in 2 weeks) has not paid for any of your training, licensing, certifications, medicals, etc., then you are not legally bound to proceed with your employment with them, but from a business / employer-employee point-of-view, it is clear that you do have an obligation to proceed with them. (and if you use this as a learning experience, it will all work out fine!) And btw, if company "a" has paid for ANY of your training, licensing, certifications, medicals, transportation, etc. and/or if you've already signed your letter of employment / letter of intent (or if you already signed your contract, of course), then you are bound to your word and you need to proceed with your contract with them! From the moral and ethical point-of-view, you should proceed with your contract with company "a", no matter how good the offer from company "b" may be. From the seafarer / mariner point-of-view, you also should proceed with your contract with company "a", no matter how good the offer from company "b" may be. (and, if they really want you ---- they will still want you / still offer you a contract 6 months from now) I hope this helps? (btw, should you decide to go with the better offer, please remember that you're burning your bridges / ruining your reputation right-up-front....and please remember "you never get a second chance to make a first impression"!)
@@captainjohn49 Thank you so much CaptainJohn for taking your time to provide me with such detailed, informativeand if i may, expert advice. I appreciate the effort. It is very clear then considering all that you have stated that i need to go with company A. Just to let you know, i have not signed contract yet, i paid for all my training and documents as well.. i only have a LOE and assignment date. I do not wish to burn bridges as well, hence my confusion. In the same breath, i do not know what the chances are, that il stay in company B's pool for that position and will get an LoE from them after 6 months. I am taking your advice as i have little time and zero expertise in the cruise industry, to keep deliberating I appreciate you for that. Also im only seeing your response now. I'm an American milf hunter!!!, my very first cruise i hooked up with a milf/gilf from Florida. this is how i know how to answer the questions about cabin noise and that the inside cabins are pretty sound proof, because my mum and dad in the next cabin never heard us 😁😁. i guess thats why i fell in love with cruising quick
How interesting. Your video struck a cord with me in another way. I found it to be a good metaphor for "is now a good time to leave the UK" what with the doom and gloom of the Labour governments up an coming budget, which doesn't fill very many with hope
That comment manages to be sleazy, creepy and insulting, all at the same time. In my country (Australia) you would be legally harassing a person if you said that.

Your age definitely won't be an issue! Alot of people start in their 30s! If you have the right experience and attitude, you'll get the job!

I’m not sure. Racism, sexism and favouritism plays a big part of things of ships. Might been the difference between being a drifter and a captain.
