    I just realised that what makes this channel stand out is not your line of work, at least for me. I'm a carpenter myself. I don't need to watch someone else do what I do. It's your personality, your editing and the fact that the execution of the same underlying principles in two different countries is just exotic enough but not overwhelmingly different.
    In short: love your channel 😅

    Festool used to have an issue with armatures burning out on Kapex saws: I believe it’s sorted. Voltage drop is a common cause of motor burnout: usually caused by excess length of extension cords. The other issue is overloading a 10A connection: the Kapex 120 is 1600w, which only leaves 800w available on a 10A connection in NZ. If your extractor is over 800w (it’s likely 1200w), it should be connected to a separate power point.

    • @nakedapprentice
      @nakedapprentice 3 года назад +1

      Connecting to a separate power point probably won't get around that. Several power points, even rooms, are wiring together in one circuit.

      Yeah I agree! It's always underestimated.. my boss isn't on the tools so much, and he is always saying stuff like "so you just have to fix that back and we're done" ... and I'll say "well yeeesss, it needs adjusting to fit now, and the bare edge will need painting, then I'll fix it back, and then the nail holes will need filling, then I'm going to rub the filler down and caulk the edges, then it can all have a coat of paint, and when that's dry, a top coat." There's no f*%$ing "just" about it! 😡😄

      @@ironpirate8 Did a laminate flooring job that took four days because there was a 5-sided bay window at one end, a bay window on one side, and we had to go around a staircase bannister and a 105-degree corner. Lots of funny-shaped cuts had to be made! It then took another 4 days just to do all the trims because the client wanted custom trims stained to match existing trims. One piece on that 5-sided bay window required 14 cuts with a dovetail saw to make it fit! Client was absolutely thrilled with the result and did pay up without hesitation. Maybe I should have charged a PITA surcharge on that job!

    I run my Kapex straight off the dust extractor, and that is how I have been instructed to use it by Festool reps. They even make it so the laser being on doesn't trigger the dust extractor in auto. Been using it for a few years like that with no problem. I do recommend using the widest hose you have for dust collection on it though.
    Separately I know they aren't cheap, but I love the mobile base + rails for my Kapex. The stop with the millimeter marks on it just makes cuts, and repeat cuts so easy, and so much easier to roll the saw around instead of carrying it. Just my 2 cents worth. Keep up the great work!

    From Oregon in US, interesting to watch. Lots of materials are similar,, but I get lost on metric measurements. I thought we here only did wood framing based in my experience in mid-Europe, where still restricted from. Love seeing good craftsmanship, and good tools! My favorite is Milwaukee, but have mostly DeWalt. I go with what I need and amount of use. I’m slowly upgrading my 18V tools to the new ones, but only as they fail. Good luck! I like learning. Curious about electrical there. Some British I haven’t figured out, but was competent in Germany. In US, deal with 120v/240v. Expensive to run copper for all. Current runs high, so takes more care for fire safety.

    Having an insufficiently sized extension cord will cause a motor to overheat (I believe because it's trying to draw more current than the cord will allow) but it would be odd if Festool made the vacuum cord too small to cope with running both at the same time - get yourself a hot air gun for removing paint Scott.. makes a world of difference and makes it easy to scrape out the grooves in mouldings too.. and nice job getting things 'plumb' ;o)

    If anything the vacuum helps the saw by pulling the sawdust out/giving it airflow, won't burn a motor because of that. Plug it in and have a dustfree workspace, and don't worry about it!

    • @jimbobcatfish
      @jimbobcatfish 3 года назад +5

      I think he means the power supply. The vacuum cleaner will have a function where it starts sucking once the drop saw starts drawing power. I suppose the only reason people might worry about the motor burning out is because the drop saw might require more power than what the vacuum is supplying through the power point.
      I doubt very much that this is the case though as both tools are festool and have been designed to work in conjunction with each other.

    • @steviemyles-eu4lf

    • @alexanderverbeek95
      @alexanderverbeek95 3 года назад +1

      @@brl5755 Still, that's not going to kill anything. Also, both the Festool saw and vacuum have a softstart to limit the inrush current. If it was too high, the breaker would trip anyway.
      Also, the power outlet on the vacuum is just a straight-through connection from the cord coming in. It's just like an extension cord, except for the fact that it's run though a current transformer to trigger the vacuum. It will not limit power to the saw. Just use it, it's what it's designed for.

    • @brl5755
      @brl5755 3 года назад +1

      @@alexanderverbeek95 soft start is good, staggered start is better, and overloading a single outlet is still possible in both cases causing motor strain (heat) leading to premature failure... Though that's more common locally with only 120v at the tap. Fridge compressor inrush can be as high as 70A but it's for short enough of a time that a breaker doesn't trip. Adding a 2nd motor to that equation wouldn't be healthy for either as voltage drop would increase current draw as stated before. The talk of the vacuum being a bottleneck is possible if not plugged directly into the wall and into an extension of smaller gauge cable than necessary. Most wouldn't admit to that....

    I've used the Kapex with the Festy auto vac for 10 years, with no problems. Its had heavy carpentry use on site.

    Been using the original kapex 120 for many years always attached to my old ct33. Recently gave it to my son and bought the ks120 reb. Still run it on the ct 33 with a 36mm hose. No problems. Im not sure if the motor problem was only on the 110 version , either way i think it was solved a while ago. Would like to see your in-depth perception of the kapex120. Either way i am more than happy

    My Kapex had to go back to Festool UK for an armature repair. Yes I had it plugged into the Festool extractor. It was out of warranty but was picked up, fixed and returned free of charge.
