This was my dream car when I was like 12-13 yrs old. But it was an import product and they had a lot of tariffs against those imported goods back where I was living in. It's good to see this car still being manufactured!!
This looks like it would be a great first RC for my little boy to play with in the back yard while still having room to be modified and grow a little. The round body of the beetle look like it might take being rolled and tumbled a little better than some of the other bodies on this chassis. This is the next chassis on my wish list, great review.
Thank you Greg for great, informative and early review. Tamiya makes the most fun models ever. And I simply love their comical look. Sometimes a 27t silver can with nimh battery will give you much more fun than 'standing backflips Traxxaslike 4s' models. By the way, this body is not new. It is old Monster Beetle QD model body, released about 30 years ago.
Of course I want to see the crawler project! But I think I would have more fun with this as a basher like my Comical Avante and Dump truck, but in a slightly more off-roadish environment! I would love this rig.
Hi Greg, your Tamiya Monster Beetle build inspired me to build one. I have finished building the Chassis and am now trying to fitting the body at the right height using yours as an example. I noticed you had a pin in the bottom hole of the rear posts then two rubber rings the second presumably pinched from the forward posts (keeps the rear wing from fouling the lower pin) pinned above the wing then sawn off at the fourth hole. The front posts where pinned at the sixth hole and sawn off at the ninth hole. I will probably give each Post an extra hole before I trim it. Please let me know if I got it right
I think it's a great wee kit, gonna start saving for one. What if you turned down the throttle rates to slow down the response. But like you said, the battery is way up there. Great video. 🤠👍👍👍
yep defintely is from the qd beetle as I still have mine and everything looks the same except for the mounting holes. Tempted to get this as I love the monster beetle.
Meh. Tamiya just needs to make a full blown crawler and stop making little changes to existing kits. The portals are cool but are they really necessary considering where and how this will be driven?
TS O'Day Yep. Their bodies are awesome but I’d kinda like more chassis types and sacrifice some body options. Nice channel. I subbed. Sorta remember a few of those Tamiya ads on TV I think. Recently got back into it and picked up some of the kits I had back in the day like the TA02 and F103. Also got XV01,M03RA and DF03RA. Have only had time to build the XV01 cause I’ve been busy with a Slash and Axial Yeti Jr Can Am. Love this hobby.
Tamiya is already pretty far behind in the crawler game. To make a serious entry to compete with Axial is going to be quite a challenge. I think they prefer to compete in the vintage niche, where their only competition is Kyosho. Tamiya managed to set the expectation for low performance, but great looks and they get away with it. I understand they still try to compete with buggies but are not entirely successful...
Hello I've watched a couple of your Videos and I really appreciate all the information you give I would like to get back into RC cars when I was younger for Christmas one year my uncle supposedly bought me one unfortunately I was never allowed to use it but I did watch him work on it and use it quite often now that I have kids that are a little older I would like to get one for my family I'm looking to get something not too expensive easy to work on easy to use I guess something more off-road than Street I don't need something super fast just something dorable what would be your best suggestion for a beginner and unfortunately a beginner on a tight budget thank you for your time and God bless you
1.9 trail/crawl tires.. different body, the vw t1 that came with the regular wr02 version would look sweet on it... higher turn motor probably... and of course stuff like a winch, led light kit and some scale accessories 😎
Great review Greg, is it possible to put the wheelie bar the opposite way, so the wheel points to the ground instead of up to the sky? I have a few Tamiya cars, so the interest is there!
Eric Christopher It is possible, but you do need 4 spacers and some longer screws to do it. In the stock position it’s “keyed” to the chassis. The spacers push the bar out so you can flip it over.
Always been a Tamiya fan , but nowadays i personally feel they have been relegated to shelf Queens due to the fragility and lack of parts ,every time i take one out it seems to break something different .
While a project with this would be interesting, I'd love to see you go ham on the Dynahead, See how much you can get out of that and if possibly it could get close to the UMG10
No, don't bother trying to make this into a crawler. Its basic architecture is going to spell FAIL for that use. Even as more of a scale crawler, it will come up short. Re. the "friction dampers" Tamiya is so fond of, I think they put some engineering time into tuning the "semi-pneumatic tires" with the rims. I've found on my Lunch Boxes in the past that they do most of the real shock absorption and the friction dampers just absorb the excess. Looking at your trail video, it is a bit bouncy, but nothing like a Lunch Box or Clodbuster. It actually works pretty well; a clever way to save cost. The Beetle body is a good choice, it seems to make it roll and give you better odds of it landing on the tires. (as opposed to a pick-up body) I can see why Tamiya doesn't want to let go of this. Nice job on the video. The trail footage & music were especially good.
big Tamiya fan but in 2019 plastic bushings friction shock come on, also as some have said we need new kits, not a rehash of old mixed with a few modern touches Tamiya you really need to up your game if you are to stay and compete in the RC world
If any grown man has ever been self conscious about being laughed at while out wheeling a scale rc truck on a public trail, this truck would bring that about. 😂 I didn’t grow up with RC’s, which is probably why I have zero interest in most Tamiya models, because they look a bit too toy’ish. They seem to require a distinguished taste, and I can respect that. CC-01’s look great, but they also look more realistic. Perhaps if this model had a slightly longer wheelbase, and didn’t come in such flamboyant colors, I might find it more appealing. Baja crawlers usually look pretty cool, after all, and I built one a few years back, on an SCX10 SWB chassis. ✌🏼
Futaba radios dont work no more so i upgraded to flysky fs- gt2b on both and new servos and traxxas vl5 esc and motors still run 6cell ... i still have my Team associated rc10 gold pan race buggy all stock but i dont run this one at all ... few year ago i bought a used rc10 goldpan i race that on carpet every Wednesday night
PhilthyCo RC the standard for modern Hobby Grade is hex/Allen head screws.....but then again, Tamiya is stuck in the past (but they do have killer bodies) 😃
Tamyia calls it a TRAIL truck, Nowhere does it say Crawler! I don't get it? Why do you have to make EVERYTHING about Crawling? Why can't you just use a vehicle for what it is designed for for a change?
I'm not a fan of this. Tamiya's fun class stuff is getting closer to toy grade now, and they keep releasing dumb overpriced "black edition" models with nothing new.
This was my dream car when I was like 12-13 yrs old. But it was an import product and they had a lot of tariffs against those imported goods back where I was living in. It's good to see this car still being manufactured!!

that looks like some really sweet woods to bash around in!
can't believe i am watching it the same day this vids released, i so want that body!
Check kamtek if you only want the body
It looks so cool, definitely do the crawler project!
Thank you Greg for great, informative and early review. Tamiya makes the most fun models ever. And I simply love their comical look. I would live to see a crawler project with it. Maybe it will help Tamiya get get on the ball and give us what we want!
Awesome video... My monster beetle just bash at skatepark
I love how you do all kinds of videos for all RC. Great job as always and the Monster bug is an absolute classic.
Of course I want to see the crawler project! But I think I would have more fun with this as a basher like my Comical Avante and Dump truck, but in a slightly more off-roadish environment! I would love this rig.
Definitely add that crawler project to the list! Love the look with the scale/crawler tires 👍🏼
✌🏼😎👍🏼
sylvainster30 Yup, I haven’t stopped thinking about the project. I think it needs to happen.
I think I’m going to have to “get one for my 1yr old daughter” 😂😎
Looks like a cool little toy for the kids! Great review Greg 👍
Aaron Cook Absolutely!
9:18 here I imagine myself jumping like a cat to save the truck from swimming 🐱🤣
Love that "new" truck . Nice Video, thanks👍
Yes try the crawling tires on and do a video👍👍
James Swift I think I need to make it happen!
@@rcdriver PRO-JECT! PRO-JECT! PRO-JECT! :D
Love to see you go crazy on modifications on this, would be hilarious.
Steve Moon I agree! 😁
Yeah, the crawler tires look good on it. But you would have to put a ton of weight on the front end to make it a crawler. Do it! 😊👍
ER RC I was thinking of mounting a shorty pack right behind the front tower to get the weight forward. Weight in the front wheels too.
So cool!
OMG! You almost gave me a heart attack when the Monster Beetle rolled backwards towards the creek!
magnumcyclonex Just think how I felt as it was happening lol!
cool car .. cool video
great video Greg, this kit looks like another fun build and i really like the crawler tires on it!
Another Tamiya I gotta get
Beautiful RC car

Still real cool. Where was this video taken?
Great recovery from roof/flipped incidents 👏🏼 great review and footage my friend 👍🏼
✌🏼😎👍🏼
sylvainster30 Thanks! Few close calls with this one.
Can the portals be mounted on the dump truck?
Nice run, someplace next to the Hous?
I think it's a great wee kit, gonna start saving for one. What if you turned down the throttle rates to slow down the response. But like you said, the battery is way up there. Great video. 🤠👍👍👍
Well when t it went rolling down that hill i had visions of it floating down stream into the sunset lol
John Salt Never had an RC car float away on me. But I did watch one of my RC boats float out to sea years ago. I wonder where it is now lol
@@rcdriver probs in the bahamas livin the life of riley lol or a shark ate it
Is the much difference between the Gf01.
Yes build the crawler bug!!!
The body is from the QD line of cars from early 90's
Project please Greg :)
yep defintely is from the qd beetle as I still have mine and everything looks the same except for the mounting holes. Tempted to get this as I love the monster beetle.
Yeah men please do that..just got to figure out the the limit to do crawling stuff
What do you think the top speed is?
Cool, but quirky.......yep, that's Tamiya for ya!
I’d rock this one 🤘
Crawler-ize it !!!
Meh. Tamiya just needs to make a full blown crawler and stop making little changes to existing kits. The portals are cool but are they really necessary considering where and how this will be driven?
EXACTLY! I love Tamiya but they reuse the same kits with different bodies way to much, kind of makes me mad!
TS O'Day Yep. Their bodies are awesome but I’d kinda like more chassis types and sacrifice some body options. Nice channel. I subbed. Sorta remember a few of those Tamiya ads on TV I think. TS O'Day just saw that 959 rally ad on your channel. If Tamiya updated that chassis and put that body on it, I’d snatch it up.
@@Guy-em4ck Exactly bro, thanks for the sub!

Have you tried maybe taking the Dynahead and putting crawler tires on it and some oil shocks, a HW1080?
Did record your build of this? Also would it be any faster if you wasn't to use the putty they provide?
very nice car

Sponge1310 Oh man, you’ve got me thinking more about this project 😎
How fast is it?
Yes make it a crawler
Beetle crawler video please🙏🏼
This thing is around forver? you can still buy that?
my father had this when i was kid... im 39 .O_o
they still produce and sell that?
Will a weight up front not be the answer
What type of wheels is that

Can you guys do a review on the Losi 8ight nitro truggy rtr
Looks like they borrowed the body shell from the quick drive monster beetle
While a project with this would be interesting, I'd love to see you go ham on the Dynahead, See how much you can get out of that and if possibly it could get close to the UMG10
roadhog29389 I placed an order with Pro-Line last week for... wait! I’ve said too much🤐
To anyone else that has this kit: do I need to put grease inside the diffs to go along with the putty ball? Thanks! Greg I hope you see this.
Don’t crawl might as well just get the regular 1 , don’t like the yellow rims either
I agree. I'd rather have chrome wheels!
Hey, can you please try to get a giveaway set up for the rest of us that don't live in the USA? Love the videos, keep it up👍
carter_1295 Actually have one coming very soon!
Sweet, I can't wait!

those are nice but ...I have a subaru brat and grasshopper all stock working great 20 some years later
Troy rcman Those are fun. Cool to hear they’re still running!
Why should you lock the diffs with that putty? Better to have the diffs at least partially free!
Tamiya has so much potential. They come so close, but they just keep missing the mark.
Joshua Gregg They have a following, there are some that will dig this. But I agree, it would be nice to see something a bit more refined.
Says you!
Joshua
beautynads Yes, says me. That’s why it’s my comment.
Project BRUSHLESS crawler???!!
So it's a water beetle. It searched the water.
It’s so unstable because the wheelbase is very short and the body sits high so the centre of gravity is very high.
It's not bad
If any grown man has ever been self conscious about being laughed at while out wheeling a scale rc truck on a public trail, this truck would bring that about. 😂 I didn’t grow up with RC’s, which is probably why I have zero interest in most Tamiya models, because they look a bit too toy’ish. Whoa! Almost fell into the water. 😅
CJ Villaceran It did once... waterproof test🤣
Looks great, Greg. Those Phillips head screws are driving me crazy! 😬
PhilthyCo RC the standard for modern Hobby Grade is hex/Allen head screws.....but then again, Tamiya is stuck in the past (but they do have killer bodies) 😃
The RCNetwork LOL, but it’s classic Tamiya Rich!
The RCNetwork I wonder if snapon or there BluePoint brand has those JIS screw drivers. I never knew there was different type of Phillps screws.
Just buy the Tamiya ones #1 and #2, they are only a few bucks each
Make it a crawler
Tamiya needs to step up their game. They have been running on the same platform since the 80s
It would be cool if it was 50$
That's not the old Monster Beetle body. It's smaller and has nicer detail parts.
Its toooo pricey at almost $300 for the kit that is crazy
I've got a traxxas slash 4×4
Just looks like a rolling stone. . . hahaha
👍🏼
Tamyia calls it a TRAIL truck, Nowhere does it say Crawler! I don't get it? Why do you have to make EVERYTHING about Crawling? Why can't you just use a vehicle for what it is designed for for a change?
It hurts my soul every time you bash one of these awesome cars.
I still can’t get past the looks of Tamiya rigs. They look like Walmart quality rigs.
Tamiya kits ARE NOT toys like Wallyworld crap!
Music is too loud and bassy.. had to cut video short... SO ANNOYING
yet again Tamiya make something that is probably quite expensive look like a cheap toy
This seems like a waste of money, even for a young child. *** its 300+ dollars!?
I'm not a fan of this. Tamiya's fun class stuff is getting closer to toy grade now, and they keep releasing dumb overpriced "black edition" models with nothing new.
That thing is trash
I don't get it, why do people like tamiya? They look so cheaply made. Don't hate on this comment I'm just wondering.
Took 13 min to say that thing is a junk in most kind way
Tamiya is lost lol
