    That was a great session, thanks very much. I always think of the "rules" as guidelines rather than rules. They aren't a substitute for thinking.

    Interesting your comments about ‘rules'. Andrew Robson in his Times column talks of the disease, SHPLAM (Second Hand Plays Low Autopilot Mode) and gives examples where lazy thinking leads to disaster.

    On first hand, you should not fear losing 4 Spade tricks. West led the S4 and you have the S32, so West is most likely leading 4th from a 4-card suit.
