    The pianist you are watching is Hiromi Uehara from Japan. She plays her own style, which consists of jazz, blues, fusion, pop and rock. This video of her playing "I Got Rhythm" is actually more of a tribute to it's composer George Gershwin than it is to Oscar. I know she knew Oscar, and I would think he would be proud of her treatment of this classic. I've heard her play this arrangement in live performance many times. As a showy tune which struts her monstrous technique, this music serves her wow factor more than it demonstrates artistic compositional merit. But then again, if you got it (chops / technique) ......flaunt it. That's what people pay to see, and she always delivers !

    The tittle is suggesting me emptily to watch something I don't know very much about, but I'm pianist. I must recognize that this is one of the best JAZZ AND LATIN JAZZ/FUSION piano players and performers in the world, and scrolling between the comments below, I read someone to say that singing and playing piano well is harder than this, when its one of the most basic things you learn as musician, not like one amateur uppity self-claimed "musician" of the new wave, honestly many have said also "it's easy to play" well yes it is, if you play it like on 40 bpm, because I doubt entirely the ones who have commented have such discipline which developed certain skill to play at that tempo. Hiromi Uehara is one great pianist, and she has merit over it, not over criticizing other better pianists/musicians than her, but for studying piano like since she was 3 years old.

    Those interested in Jazz may be interested in my jazz piano blog. I discuss speed not being everything, along with other philosophical articles. I do feel the title is useful rather than misleading because all pianists 'should' watch this video; it will make them realise that there is not 'correct' way to play the piano. Some enjoy speed and dexterity, others enjoy musicality. This video/performer is very good at highlighting such a difference.

    Her name is Hiromi Uehara. She is the most gifted pianists around IMO. In case you think this is a fluke, check out the "Tom and Jerry Show" song she did. It is equally as amazing! She has also recorded a duet album with Chick Corea where she went head to head with one of the masters, and definitely held her own. Her own CDs are not only technically great, but beautiful as well. Playing acoustic piano is definitely harder than a feather lite synth. The weighted keys take much more finger strength to sound the notes. She is just amazing!! This will either make you want to practice for hours on end, or like Jose said " start selling tacos!" LMAO!

    I must say having been a professional pianist myself for a little over 18 yrs or more I really do think that all players weather it be keyboards or a piano should watch this, it really gives everyone a great perspective on what you can become if you practice enough, my teacher always told me practice makes perfect. I really like the different styles that she plays, she plays it with such passion and even if I wasn't a professional at this I would not be so arrogant and negative I would take this knowledge of this young women and approve upon myself, I just really dislike how so many people are so negative why?, why can't you take from this and make it your future, I didn't become a professional in one day or night if you would. I took me I would say nine yrs of very hard work

      @SPartanScapeable 9 лет назад +4

      I'm not a piano player but I am a drummer and what you say is true, if being a musician was easy and an over-night process, then everyone would be a professional. You and I, while we both play different instruments, know that trying to master our instruments can be a tough journey, us musicians put so much time into our craft, it's really crazy. I don't know the physical challenges of a piano player but as a drummer I've had to sweat, bleed, bruise my fingers, get deep cuts on my face from bringing my sticks up to high, get cuts on my fingers from fast cymbal grabbing, I've felt light headed, and I've had my heart race so fast on many occasions where I felt I was going to have a heart attack and drop dead at any second.
      I always fear I'll a heart attack while playing (it happened to Buddy Rich) but I still play my drums with high intensity, many people look at me thinking it's just a hobby but this is my life, music is my everything.
      I'd rather leave this world having a heart attack while playing music than laying in a hospital bed or an old folks home waiting to die.

    Oscar who??? Seriously, this girl is truly amazing. I have been a professional pianist and teacher for over 50 years and I know if anyone can play as well as Oscar Peterson it is Hiromi. I have been aware of her for a while because AccuJazz features many of her tracks on their piano channels. I have just recently started to find out more about her and to listen to more of her music. It is beyond amazing what Hiromi does with her playing, her compositions and her arrangements. She is so versatile, prodigious and accomplished that even Oscar would agree he has met his match! You go, girl!

    Seems like she worked pretty hard to get this together. Kudos for that. Nice drama to it, and impressive technique. Might get fewer haters, though probably fewer views too, with a different title. Nobody is the end all of piano, much less jazz piano.
    Also, not to lessen the hard work she has obviously put in on this, but there is a huge danger in rehashing old styles like this. Tatum already did this kind of piano playing, and he did it with more swagger and swing.

    THE INSPIRING AND INSPIRED (POSESSED!) HIROMI UEHARA! Listen people. The "who-is'better" back and forth banter seems to me to be profoundly (1) irrelevant, (2) misguided - is musical expression a "contest" ? a competition? (3) revealing about the limited vision of the commenters - on what dimension is Chick (or Hiromi) "better"? Finger speed? Precision? arpegios? musicality? Creativity? Predictability? Breadth of musical references in improvs? and on and on....Chick is amazing, gives me goose bumps, makes me take sudent deep breaths. And so does Hiromi, in other ways. So I recommend doing more grooving with the musical vision being laid out for y'all and less categorizing and heirarchizing these artists.

    A piano is awesome. It's one of the only instruments that one can simultaneously play a bass clef with the usual treble clef. However, one still needs to know how to make the right music to experience certain emotions, and, or, inspire a story in their mind they wish to imagine.
    Dancing is usually only done by people that like to move by impulse rather than by more intellectual and emotional causes, unfortunately. Those types of people remind me of those funny toys that just move to sound.

    "I've got rhythm", the theme is easily identifiable all throughout the myriad of styles, rhythms, syncopations and abstractions...she paints pictures with the keys, Oscar Peterson was there for a reason, and the girl truly rendered homage to Peterson...I'm sure Mr. Peterson, was appreciative of the dedication of this performance, to her hero!

  • @sweetoldetc
    @sweetoldetc 11 лет назад

    I agree. While Oscar Peterson can play fast, he can also do amazing things playing very slowly over a ballad. When I listen to Miles Davis, Chet baker Monk..etc I am always reminded how much you can do playing very little.. you can create magic with combination of right notes, right tone/accent, and right timing/rhythmic placement.

      +Paul Ryan That's a kinda lame rationale for not watching Hiromi Uehara. More than lame, it's wrongheaded; all virtuoso players deserve watching. Here's a sports analogy: if all young aspiring basketball players, or tennis players, avoided watching the pros for fear of being intimidated or demoralized, we'd have very much fewer "stars" on either court coming up from our youth. Inspiration is real, and observation of highly skilled and creative artists (or athletes) actually engages neural circuitry in our brains ("mirror-neurons") that facilitate learning and imitating. So, Paul - au contraire! I say watch Hiromi and Chick and Tatum and Peterson and Rubenstein and Waller and Chucho Valdez and Eldar Djangirov and George Shearing and Micehl Petrucciani and Errol Garner and Cesar 'Pupy' Pedroso and Ivan 'Melon' Lewis and then watch them all again! Nourish your imagination and give those genius artists their due reverent attention!

    My taste in Hiromi has gone back and forth... sometimes Hiromi is overwhelming and frantic, and I'd rather hear a player like Thelonious Monk or Fred Hersch or Ran Blake, where there's more "meaning per note" (btw please look up these pianists... incredible musicians and artists, worth listening!). Other times her technique is inspiring and motivating (when I first saw this video about four years ago I couldn't stop watching it). Here she plays all the extremes, and while it's certainly great entertainment I wouldn't call it her most artistic work. Maybe I'm mellowing out as a listener too! I agree that it'll be good to see her mature and mellow out. I mean, when you have this many chops, where can you go?
    What really sucks though is the racist and ignorant comments below (e.g. "you are obviously white... but now you're a minority"). I don't think you really have put much though into how fucking awful these things are to say. YOU, ExclusiveLM, are the problem, not erik van niekerk, for expressing his taste. Stop being a racist dickhead and respect other people's tastes and opinions without vomiting all over the comments.

    @looseSpark Very intelligent reply you gave me. That's exactly what this piece of music sounds like, it sounds like it's humorous or whimsical. I guess I'm just not too much of a "comedy" fan.

    @in5ane5hooter I totally hear that, too! Also, those things mentioned above are not useless. That's what musicians do--try to describe things through sound. I personally love this style and like the ideas that I get from it. Even some of yours come to mind!

    I always find it unsettling, and not a little frustrating, when musicians with such an obvious technical facility play music as shallow (I'm tempted to say pointless) as this. I would be interested to hear her play something by which one could truly judge her ability. Some Messiaen, for example. Just a thought.
