I mean...it has a semi-official release. It's free as a download from NPR. They commissioned it for a story. No single or vinyl pressing, but at least we have a good release of this, as opposed to Majesty Snowbird.
I know you’re out there Lord God bird. Sorry we sold you out to the sewing machine. Please forgive us one day, I’d give anything to see you soar once more.
In the delta sun, down in Arkansas It's the great god bird with it's altar call And the sewing machine, the industrial god On the great bayou where they saw it fall It's the great god bird down in Arkansas And the hunters beware, or the fishers fall And paradise might close from It's safe flight flawed It's the great god bird through it all And the watchers beware Lest they see it fall And paradise might laugh when At last it falls And the sewing machine, the industrial god And it's the great god bird With it's altar call Yes, it's the great god bird With it's altar call Yes, it's the great god bird through it all
I just learned that this bird is now considered extinct and I immediately came to RUclips to find this song. Know that this song stuck with some of us!
The Illinois/Avalanche/Songs For Christmas era is IMO, his greatest era. Listening back to this and Majesty Snowbird is like realizing Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever aren’t even on Sgt. Pepper. How do you write your masterpiece and then go.. ya here’s a couple more that coulda been the best songs on my masterpiece…
There is a spoken story that goes with this song. Do you know where to find it? The idea was that sufjan was given the story then wrote the song in response to it. It used to be on RUclips but can no longer find it.
Absolutely! It's an NPR commissioned piece, and I've heard the program where they used the song. www.npr.org/2005/07/06/4721675/brinkley-ark-embraces-the-lord-god-bird
@@unofficialsufjanstevens7829 I found this video looking for more info after listening and reading this interesting story - www.sciencehistory.org/distillations/podcast/the-death-of-the-lord-god-bird It can be downloaded.
I will never get over this not getting an official release

@@unofficialsufjanstevens7829 thank you for this info!!
I’ve been wondering that for over decade. This is possibly his best song.
Such a sad song. That last banjo strum, I imagine it represents the last ivory-billed woodpecker taking flight, never to be seen again.
I will now always think of it that way. How beautiful. Thank you
Sufjan: It's the great god bird.

Can't be too literal.
The bird just was declared distinct today. Kinda depressing.
Distinct?
It's been extinct for a long long time
@@milesgreb3537Not so fast 💨 as sightings were reported in June 2024.
This has changed! They have found evidence of it’s continuance as of 2 weeks ago!
Always has been and always will be my favorite Sufjan song

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever shouldn't be on Sgt. Pepper's because they aren't.
The Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields mention just nailed it for me
