I've had a situation last year where there was this art show in downtown LA.All the art pieces were done under black light. It was a one day deal. We had to pay a fee per piece to get into the show. It was pretty pricey tbh. When it came time to go to the show they weren't even ready when people arrived, two hours late. The art pieces were displayed in the basement floor of the venue and poorly mounted and humid. Those (like me) who were trying to sell their pieces were given a piece of card stock with the price taped next to the art. No one who came knew where to go to purchase the art as well. turns out you would have to talk to the folks at the entrance that you were interested in purchasing. There was no sign or any info given to the visitors. So pretty much no one made any sales that day. There was only 1 bathroom for the whole thing. They promoted there would be a bar but then told us to bring our own alcohol if we wanted because they were just using the bar to serve snacks no drinks. They recently asked people to send them footage and pictures for a promo they wanted to do for the next show coming up. I can't bring myself to give them anything because it felt like the show runners used me and others for the money and didn't care about our work. I remember the heated discussions after the show from other artists because they were told to take their work home the night of the show and some of them didn't come by car. This was a learning experience and now I am looking at shows more carefully.

We do an indoor show one Friday and Saturday a month from April to Nov. Last April the Friday show was great but on Saturday it rained and stormed so hard that roads were being washed out, the parking lot was gravel and it was washing away, it was horrible. The woman who ran the show had to close early. She was so apologetic about having to close early, we all understood. She gave all the venders that were there that day 50% off the space fee for the next show. She is so nice and we will be doing her show again in 2020.

Being a gallery owner my artists are the most important to me , treat all with respect and professionalism , we draft a mutual contract , therefore a meeting of minds and expectations from both parties , when I first started I had 9 , second year 20 , last year 30 and had to turn some away ,

You guys are spot on about honesty. I was part of a co-op show that took my money, didn't put out any promotional emails (I joined their email list far before I joined the show, and not one blip of a message from them even though they promised to promote the show for us as part of our fees), weren't open when they said they were (some of my buddies went to see my work and the gallery was closed when the hours said different), and was treated very rudely by the people who ran the gallery. Not one refreshment except tap water in plastic cups at the reception (again, the fees were supposed to cover wine and hor d'oeuvres), and they weren't even recycling the cups. In general, really awful experience. They asked me to return, and I said no thanks politely but wasn't honest with them as to why I didn't want to join (they never asked, so I didn't really feel like they would care either way).
It still sometimes bothers me that I didn't tell them how I felt, and now looking back, I wished I had. I felt like maybe I was just expecting too much since I didn't have much experience then, but later on, I had much better experiences with other galleries and shows and realized it was a ripoff. Luckily I didn't let it keep me from joining other shows, and didn't let it sour my love of art and galleries in general. But honesty, even when it's the hard truth, is really ALWAYS the best policy. Even if it's just to clear your head and move on quicker.
You guys are great, and I love the new format too. While I didn't watch much of it (I'm usually painting when I'm listening to your videos), it was cool to look up and watch a bit of your process here and there. I'm sure if I was less busy I'd be watching it in full!

Rafi, this peice is absolutely srunning! Watching this creation inspired me so much. As I watched you layer and add to it I saw what I would do next along the way and what you did that was different and it opened my mind to loving my own aesthetic which is a huge step for me because so much of my life has been self loathing, but this space of creating art is where I've found pure love for myself and you and Klee have contributed to that in a big way. I've watched and listened to this video several times over the last year. Each time it reminds me to value my art.

Love seeing you paint !I have a little story to tell about this artist problem. About for years ago I secured a spot for a solo exhibition in our little town Art council Gallery. You have to reserve a spot for this 2 years ahead of time ! I was in to photography at that time and had a great theme for the show,I filled out all the forms and went on my merry way. About 2 1/2 moth before the show date they emailed me reminding me about my upcoming exhibition.I panicked because I had a lot going on in the 2 years that past and had no time to get 30 pieces together for an exhibition.
I work with an other artist in my day job and I new he had plenty of artwork for a show I asked him he said okay and tolled the gallery about the change.I picked this specific time because I know that in the theater upstairs ,which is part of the gallery, will be a all female show which had 4 nights of performance, in the middle of the month long exhibition. There would be 100's of women walking through the gallery especially during the 20min intermissions! So here is the kicker .... they didn't open the gallery part during the 4 day theater show !!!!!!!!!!!!! Their excuse was they didn't want people to damage the artworks when they would walk around with wine and chess !! My friend didn't know about any of this till he went to check if he sold any artwork.Because he as a male could not attend the women show. I felt sorry and disappointed for him ! The gallery a none profit art council doesn't get that we artists are in the business of selling art not just hang art in a gallery for fun .Even though they would have made 30% of the sales. Sorry for the long comment.

Oh, wow, that really stinks. After waiting 2 years Icwould have been crushed. I know it takes a lot of work to put on a show. I think I would have thrown up. I hung my art at a dentist office they said they would promote my art. They told me that people asked about tge art all the time and loved it. They said yes a patient of ours painted that. Really!! They didn't give my name or information so they could see more of my work or get an opportunity to buy their own. Ugh. Sometimes you have to wonder "what were they thinking?"

Years ago my business partner and I did shows. We applied to get into one show that was difficult to get in. When we finally did get in the man who ran it treated the artists like crap. He did not have a decent word for anybody. Was verbally abusive to all of us. If anyone asked a question he yelled and cursed at them. Would walk around and in front of customers belittle the work. Hmmm...my artist friends did not mention that when they said what a great money maker the show was. The show ran from 10 to 6, by 11 we started packing and by noon we were leaving. We had way to much self esteem to allow anybody to treat us like that. Others packed up and left also. I could not believe anybody would stay or do the show a second time. Point of the story...do not be so desperate that you allow yourself to be treated like a door mat or worse.

Caroline so sorry that happened to you. Don't beat yourself up, it has happened to all of us. Early on I paid for space in a gallery but the gallery took lots of artists money and didn't have enough space. Needless to say my art didn't get much hang time and most of the time I paid for was in the storage room. Lessons learned: 1.only do business with a gallery that uses a contract to explain both parties responsibilities 2. Other artists in the community were aware of this gallery's less than ethical practices (find an art community- artists love to help other artists!)

OMG I totally love this new format for your podcasts....as an artist I find it very hard to sit and listen to a podcast if either I am not doing something or if there isn't something to watch at the same time...call it ADD/ADHD or whatever but I always no matter how interesting the podcast is I will almost certainly fall asleep or daydream or something like that.... LoL...I wonder if it's just me or if this is a common thing amongst other artists but damn.... LoL...yeah u guys nailed it on the head with this format.... also I loved this podcast, it says what we all as artists feel when it comes to failed shows that are not on the fault of the artists....how a gallery or business in general handles the "Oh shit" moments for their consumers/partners/ECT. is everything....

I tend to feel that way about most craft fairs, heh. It's a lot of money to rent a table, make products, build displays, but nobody seems to go to them. It usually ends up being a quaint room full of frustrated vendors. I could never break even. They're fun enough, but it sucks knowing that the person who organized the event got their money in the end. Organizers always get their money, no matter how busy the event.
Art galleries, though... they don't cost nearly as much, and they don't get the commissions without sales, so it feels more like a team effort. I sent art to a private gallery once, one of those galleries that does trendy "party" events with the bodypainting and the fashion shows and the laser lights. I took my friends to the event and they charged us all admission fees for the "party". My artwork wasn't even on the walls... they left it in storage and didn't bother to tell me. Other artists were also missing paintings at the show. It was super embarrassing, and when I went to pick up the art the next day, the owner didn't even acknowledge the snub. No thanks!

Love the new format (but of course I miss seeing your smiling faces :-)! Great stuff as usual. So far I have had great experiences in dealing with art fairs and galleries. On one occasion, I was 5 minutes away from the opening of a fair when the organizer got a call from the city about an issue with her insurance. As such, she had to tell the 20 vendors at the last minute that the event had to be shut down! I could see the disappointment on her face and even the tears she was trying to hold back as she apologized for the ordeal. She issued us all a full refund and with the way she handled it, I would definitely give it another shot sometime down the road.

Another great talk thank you guys! This past year was my first year getting out there and promoting and showing my art. I went to 14 shows, was accepted to 4 or so group gallery exhibits and put my work into a few local artisan shops too. I learned lots!! I didnt sell much which was disappointing but I am fully aware it takes time, perseverance, determination and sticktuitiveness. Lol. Most of the shows were well organized with a few not so much. Surprisingly I experienced that the largest most expensive shows were the least lucrative. My twice monthly Artisan cart at our local farmers market is the best so far which is also surprising. The retail artisan shops were generally a bad experience. In my experience most were anxious to sign you up but none actively promoted your work. The one shop did not even have anyone on staff doing sales of any of the items in the shop. The one lone employee sat at the counter and waited for people to cash out their purchase. Plus their marketing focus was too narrow targeting only women in a particular age demographic. I don't regret trying out different venues because the things I have learned are extremely valuable to me moving forward. Next week I have my first meeting with a small local gallery who is interested in my work. Very exciting. I love watching and listening to your videos and podcasts and plan on launching my own videos sometime soonish. Lol. Maybe it will help with my introversion, or maybe not!!! Anyway thank you and best wishes to you both always. Www.cherylannhillsartist.com

And Similarly- be wary with whom you split a booth with. Get paid up front if you put the space in your name. I shared a booth at a very well known local holiday market. My booth partner Filled the 10x10 with her soft goods and random things from her old storefront. My stuff took up very little space but her stuff was everywhere. She took over, didn't sell a thing and her stuff smelled (like dog and cat..)I got stuck with a $150 booth rent for two days of nothing. I sold two things and got a commission. Very cautious about fairs and booth partners now.

This particular piece you are working on is a serendipitous coincidence for me, because I’m working on a piece that I hope will be successful to illustrate one of my poems and ultimately be in my senior show. I wanted to include some writing of the words of the poem and I couldn’t think of how to do it, I keep googling “text in paintings” and looking at what others have done. Not that I’m stealing what you did exactly, it’s not what I’m doing. My idea is pretty different. But inspired by this. I just hope I can make it work in oil. I really like acrylics better, but this class is oil. I want to learn it, but it’s frustrating

My favorite terrible show will always be the time I was selling in Pike Place Market on a hot summer day and a bin of yesterday's fish ice fell right outside the arcade where the crafters sell. Not a single sale and not a nostril hair was left unsinged, the tourists hurried through with a look of horror. Of course the actual fish area smelled fine and had its usual throng.

I had an experience at a local cafe that made me quite upset. They were looking for artists to each display their work. Each artist has the entire cafe for a month. I hung my art and then 2 weeks later I called and asked what date was I to take my art down. They told me it had already been taken down. It wasn't even up two weeks and was to be up for a month and they never called me and took it down themselves. I was so angry I will never ever give them my business.

This is really interesting from a gallery owner and artist point of view. Is it more normal in America to pay for your own exhibition as opposed to the gallery taking commission on what they sell? I think that would be quite rare in the UK and mosts artists actively avoid any gallery that requires a fee to exhibit. It works well... we know the gallery won't exist if we don't do our absolute best for the artists!

I don't know if this counts as being robbed or not since I'm pretty new to the art scene.
But there's a local gallery that asks for money up-front in order for them to display your art and have a chance to sell it. And if it does sell, they keep 50% of the profits.
I think it is kind of a rob, I don't know.
I just did one piece to try them out, but haven't gone back since.

Man, I love to watch you work! So I had an event this past weekend that was horribly unorganized and not much lighting. They didnt provide anyway to light up your tent. I was told that there would be plenty of lighting. Had I been in the place originally assigned to me, then I would have had excellent lighting but I was moved to the end where people for one didnt go. You couldnt see my art or jewelry. So frustrating.

I felt like that too, when i was in an art fair, i was not well inform the type of art that were displayed there. And I had huge paintings, while everyone had t shirts with art, plates and stickers.

I procrastinate a lot, so taking part in shows is stressful because I usually make the art 24 hours before I mail it (sometime with the surface of the paint dry but inside is still moist)... Let's say, I am yet to participate in a paid show that is worth it.

I absolutely love what you are doing there! The folds in the dress are awesome!
Question: What is the writing? Can you tell us what the sayings are? Do you often put messages under your work? Anyway, at a gallery I paid my fee for the show, hung my painting in the open space I was offered, then I came back and my painting was moved to a crappy spot! This is the 3rd time they have done this! Is this normal?

I love watching you paint but I get motion sick when you move around so fast. Is there a way you could have the camera steady? I think it’s really exciting to watch you build up this painting

    Hi Rafi,
In my last gallery/studio, I had a very toxic relationship with an artist there. She wanted to dominate sales and the best spot, which she managed. I did all the marketing for 3 years and then gave it up. She blocked me from being even an admin just to spite me despite my request to act as the back up occasionally. I stopped speaking to her and unfriended her on all social media. Last day I was there, she was trying to start shit in front of half the gallery like a spoiled brat. The real kick in the pants was I only sold well when the old owner ran it. Once it went artist coop my sales tanked, so literally 1000s spent in negative cash flow. Of course, it was the cheapest option to have a studio and gallery in Berkeley, so what are you going to do. I should have pulled the plug years ago, but was great friends with other artist. Endless politica at the coop and endless bad decisions by non-marketing ppl for the gallery promotion.
