This is one of the highest quality channels of this genre out there on youtube, and it's criminally underrated. You're going to blow up sooner or later.
David is spoiling us with his amazing uploads. Thanks again for making this bro. I can't wait for the next part! The Pope invading Frederick II's lands after he goes on crusade has to be one of the top ten biggest betrayals in medieval history. Achieving what that king/Emperor did is nothing short of incredible. To not lose any men while reclaiming Christendoms most important city is mind-blowing.
I been studying history for the last 25 years and i can not say enough how videos like the ones you make can make my day , i am tired of the type of documentary i always see on tv with the same anecdotes an your s are refreshing the quality is topnotch an is as good historicly speaking as hitoria civilis .im working all day long lisening to you ..make my 9h of hard labor daily fly by thanks alot keep up the good work .sorry for my language im a french Canadian and not used to write in the tongue of Shakespeare as much as french ,pretty sure i am as bad in both writings but anyway cheers to you
This is the single best channel on RUclips covering medieval history, which itself is a fatally underappreciated topic. I absolutely love the aesthetics and informational richness of in every video, keep it up!
Frederick II would likely have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today for his efforts in 1229 but I sense that he would be just as controversial-which is great. Even though, really, it was a cynical and cunning move to remove himself from a useless crusade in the hopeless snake pit of the Latin kingdom. Crusader ideologues often criticize him for the fact that the Treaty of Jaffa left the kingdom rather defenseless when the truce expired. Let them drag their knuckles… they miss the point: Frederick’s power base was under attack from the pathologically prejudiced and male-fides papacy and he had more important things to do-and, my god, did he do them. Oh, and I LOVE that you used Scott Buckley’s Age of Wonder for the soundtrack-I’ve always thought to myself that it would be splendid for a Frederick II series. I’m keen for the last episode. I hope you make the point that Frederick II was on the very cusp of total victory when he died. He passed away a considerable success and still, arguably, the most powerful European monarch of the Middle Ages. The Hohenstaufen empire looked secure in the persons of his sons and Frederick’s forces were in the ascendent in Italy and Germany. Everywhere, the support for Frederick’s enemies was hemorrhaging. It seemed that the very fact that he was alive would eventually return fickle Fortuna to his bosom, as had happened numerous times in his life. When he died, contemporaries were absolutely shocked that this figure (comparable to Napoleon in his Europe-wide colossal reputation) was so suddenly reft from the arena even as ultimate triumph seemingly neared. Such is the caprice of fortune that his dynasty did not long survive him. Perhaps he burned so brilliantly and brightly that his titanic position could only really be filled by someone of his singular capacity. That coupled with the ceaseless machinations of perfidious popes spelled the ultimate doom of Frederick’s grand imperial project-one without a true comparable peer until perhaps Charles V and certainly Napoleon.
I found your channel a year ago. Loved the style and content and then forgot about it again. 3 days ago your byzantine video was recommended. So I watched that and then the entire HRE series. In subbed now ofcourse I do jot want 't forget about this channel again!
Hussites (first on-location vid), Romans (ancient), Holy Romans (last part on Frederick II), and maybe a wild card. What Byzantine (ahem, Roman) topics would you like to see?
@Empire-Builders hussites 👀, ancient romans (pre republic or republic? )👀, wild card👀?!? Mucho interesting indeed I can't wait. Also I would like to say I liked what you did with the western part of Rome where you expanded into how France and Germany were made and i guess I would be really interested on how the countries of the Eastern Roman empire formed (new rome aka Byzantine)
@Empire-Builders I would also be interested in the muslim conquest, starting with Muhammad and all the way up to the Ottomans. I think that would be a really dope series, and we don't really hear about the Islamic crusades.
Do you mean to say that a crusade was mishandled and poorly executed!? Water is wet 😅😂. Great video, man. I feel happy that I follow this channel, I don’t know much about bout Frederick the 2nd but getting to see how great he was is certainly a thing that I find fascinating 😆😉🔥
They recapture Jerusalem right after losing it then in 1244 they lost it again due to Turkic nomads who sacked it there wasn't anything the could've done to prepare 4 that bc the ayyubids let them pass through
Fred was one of the greatest. He was trying to prevent a whole lot that came undone during and after the Renaissance. Papacy did him dirty but he nearly saved Christendom anyway.
It must be said that although the 6th Crusade did succeed in recapturing Jerusalem, its achievements were transitory, only lasting 15 years as Jerusalem quickly fell under Muslim control again. Richard Cœur de Lion's achievements in the 3rd Crusade had much more of a lasting impact. Acre was Latin Christian for 100 years and Cyprus remained so for nearly 400 years. Although it never achieved Jerusalem, the 3rd Crusade will always be my personal favorite.
It fell after 1239 but in 1240 they secured it again. And the way they lost it was due to wandering nomads that weren't even part of any empire the khwarezmians they sacked it then gave it to the ayyubids there wasn't much they could've done
"Wanderjahren"... jesus... I had to activate subtitles to get his one. I swear Americans like pseudo-Germanisms just as much as Germans like pseudo-Anglicisms.

Anyone who has a sincere interest in medieval history got to love Freddy 2.
too many people idolize the -zollern one. But the one here, the -staufen one, is the real deal
Many kings were called Great. Only one was called Stupor Mundi.
Though there was also the unbelievably precocious Otto III, Mirabilia Mundi
Idolized him since 5th grade.
Then I found out Fredrick 2 of Prussia too.
Taking notes for my next CK3 campaign
Just in time for the new dlc
My man’s a connoisseur 😏😂😂
Yo same, but in CK2

Damn, last time I was this early the carolingian dynasty was still whole.
Too soon bro

love the art style. clean/consistent and not distracting from the audio, and distinct from other history channels.

Brilliant analysis yet again!
@@Empire-Builders I must admit I support the lombard league and st rose of viterbo. Take care and God bless and thanks for the good work

Wow this was very quick after the Byzantine video
So happy to see you get some big sponsors onboard! Get that bread dawg!
Another phenomenal informative and well paced video! Keep it up, and thank you!
love the use of Total War music here and there
Commenting for the algorithm. I was thinking about this channel last night and whether anything new was out and am happy to find a new video.
Glad to see Fred get the spotlight he deserves. My favorite figure from the period by far. Great work as always sir.
Posting this at the evil hours of night I see
In honor of Fred (I get the sense he was a night owl)
for me it's middle of day, still peak
@@Empire-Builders Georgina Masson (one of the better writers in Frederick) said he was the epitome of a night owl intellectual.
Loving the videos big dawg keep it up
Díky!
Petrus Dekuji! ❤️🙏
Nice. I’m in Prague watching this right now.
Papacy: Frederick if you go on a Crusade would you lose?
Frederick II: Nah I’d negotiate.
Great video as always!
What a tense cliffhanger, how will I last until the conclusion?!
Frederick would have loved the Renaissance
Thanks brother
Those 1950s style live-action scenes (3:27). Do you film them yourselves or are they from some obscure movies?
We restore old film/documentary footage
What the hell you deserve more subs
Awesome video
13:10 I think he was playing too much Crusader Kings games 😂😂
Will we get more Byzantine videos? Will you explore the muslim conquest? What should we expect the next 3 videos to be about?

what are those live action clips taken from?
An old 16mm restored Coronet film
Frederick II was like a reincarnation of Emperor Augustus.
Great editing and video

🤣
Well, it is literally the phrase Ernst Kantorowicz uses, citing others before him which coined it for Frederick’s years in Germany.
