What's the true expiration date on gas powered cars? How long can we drive them once they've ceased production? Be sure to like the video and Special thanks to the Patreon supporters who make this content possible!
Porsche are on a move with introduction of synthetic fuel which is cleaner than electric vehicle . Just they had to figure out the emission in shipping of oil everything from ships to road vehicles.
The problem is our politicians writing these laws to try and please certain people with ZERO knowledge or understanding of cars and infrastructure. They don't understand that full electric is easier said than done.
German companies are working on synthetic fuel derived from splitting water. Building hydrocarbons from that and refining into gasoline. In short the Germans are looking to this as a means of energy security. If they invested into C02 capture devices then theoretically combustion engines could continue their existence.
i mean, even after you dont have access to gasoline anymore, im pretty positive that there is an alternative on which the combustion engine could work. you can find synthetic fuels since decades basicly. not sure why - since co2 emissions are such an important subject - they havent pushed synthetic fuels more. there are some cities that fuel their busses with synthetic fuels since 2010 or something, making them co2 neutral. i think we could do way more right here, right now, if politics hasnt settled for ev's. i love your 911.
I think that in the future we’ll be using synthetic fuels so driving older cars will be legal.
I’m just scared as a younger person that when I get to a point where I’m able to afford my dreams they’ll be gone
Same
Or they'll be outlawed :(
i 100 % agree with you, i'm also very young and i want to be able to but my dream cars and be able to use them and i think it will happen because now that tom made me think, petrol cars are not going to dissapear but maybe reduce the quantity of (talking about brand new cars) and, there still a lot of petrol cars in the road and a lot of countries have populations that can't afford a brand new electric or used car and they drive a petrol car. So, i don't think petrol cars will be gone, not until quite some time because think about it, petrol companies are not going to be benefitted if all cars went full ev mode because then they will be out of business so no, i don't think that will happen
Bingo
took the words right out of my mouth
Finally someone with a level-head on this issue.
Praying that Porsche pulls off something amazing with their efuel efforts, enough to let us keep our machines guilt-free. Or at least to convince the world to let us keep them 🙏
I'm thankful Porsche is developing alternative powered vehicles that still focus on driving. They have a long way to go, but so far they seem to be the only business focused on the driver.
@@TedwardDrives its amazing because logically i would rather say that porsche's e-fuel if it would not be interrupted will even be better, because we have infrastructure for petrol cars, we have refineries, we have fuel distribution figured out. Imagine how difficult for the environment would be to scrap all that and change it, and lets not talk about how batteries will be dangerous in recycling, nobody talks about that and I feel like it does matter. Also the reason audi scrapped their e-fuel idea in my opinion was not "unknown reason" but excess funding to push ev. I mean if the governments get to have multi billion projects on ev infrastructure, you know how loaded they will get? its just my opinion but I am interested also on other people's points of view.
All those containerships literally burn liquified dinosaurs but I should feel guilty driving a non-cat carburated veteran like twice a week...
PORSCHE SAVES DRIVING! It would be a great headline...
@@IrieFabs It is quite sad. Massive containerships, coal powerplants, huge cattle farms and lots of industry. Probably many other things too. Still, the personal car is made to look like the big baddie.
I am so thankful for the companies that still produce enthusiast cars like the new MX5, GT86/GR86, Yaris GRMN because that will keep the car culture alive a little bit longer.
IMO more and more cars like these will come out, people are getting bored of driving normal vehicles even if they arent car guys. More and more people are starting to get purposeful vehicles - either a crossover or a sports sedan.
Sports sedans are faster and better handling than ever.
People put lift kits on their Subaru, RAV4s and go exploring nature.
Hell even I am about to put a lift kit on my '17 RAV4 Hybrid.
Dont lose hope!

In the future I can imagine roads being so quiet then you have that loud as hell modded car that just gets picked off by cops
it's a snoozing Trooper's "WET DREAM".
Active exhaust would be a must have for me in the future.
Isn't it already pretty much like that? These days even most ICE cars on the road make basically no noise.
In my future, modded cars shut themselves off at stoplights because they're hybrids...
Tedward is like that one teacher who is loved by all, and is also very wise in many subjects. I value his opinion 😤
Great perspective. It isn't an OR discussion...it's an AND discussion. You nailed that imo.
I currently drive a DD Yukon XL (have 4 kids) and fun car is '87 911. I would strongly prefer my big car DD be EV and I can stop paying $100+ to fill up so I can use that money to keep my 911 in top shape.
Also...just love the occasional revving it out! Ha!
That's wonderful to hear! What EV's you thinking about (hopefully not tesla because everyone has them)
@@fast.biking_freddy Full size Cadillac Escalade EV! Apparently coming in 2025. 🤞
There is no expiration date on the soul of these cars. The raw experience that fewer and fewer people get the privilege of having in more analog vehicles is just going to make them more desirable as time goes on, at least to us oddballs. I just hope one day I finally get to live that dream of owning an older Porsche, because like you say, numbers today mean so much less if it's just a numb dopamine hit and not something whole to love.
I love how politicians will be all for banning the internal combustion engine but have no problem bailing out the cruise industry where one ship puts out the same amount of pollution as a couple million cars traveling the same distance
Tedward I just have to say how much I love your videos bro. Your commentary coupled with that ORGASMIC sound of your air cooled 911 is just *chef's kiss* Would love to have one just for that beautiful sound. Your videos never disappoint. Keep up the great work man.
Thank you!!
My fingers are crossed for the Porsche eFuel research... could be the greatest gift for enthusiasts possible if that works out
eFuels work already, but they use a lot of electricity to produce and renewable energy is still quite scarce
I'm willing to bet it would be expenisive, but it would be worth it
I drive a Chevy volt but an avid car nut. Love manuals and cars that are engaging to drive. Main thing today is there are so little cars that are fun to drive no matter how they are propelled. We need another manufacturer to make fun cars that don’t kill us with power.
I was a bit hesitant to click the video in fear of me spiraling into depression lol, but it was actually quite optimistic and insightful, thanks. Porsche and a handful of other companies have invested into their synthetic-fuel development programs as well so, at least at an optics level, there is still the will to find compromise.
I just love just watching you driving :) that's all
😊 thanks
@@TedwardDrives can you do sum night driving too ?
I don't have a problem with the proliferation of EVs or hybrids
in fact if I had taycan 4s cross turismo money rn, Id have one in my garage
what I DO have a problem with is governments making rash decisions and setting lofty goals for EV adoption without considering the consequences only to make themselves look good or pushing an agenda

Coming home from work late night, making a cup of tea and watching your videos has become a favorite habit of mine recently. keep it up, love the content 💚
I’m loving the classic car review
what I'm mad about is the stupid skyrocket of prices for cars now and days. I get times are changing but really an E30 318i going for $4000-$6000 in California. crazy man.
Here in Europe you pay for a 318 10K Euro upwards. Golf 1 Gti 18k-40k Euro.
Wow. Yeah and there’s people paying unnecessary amount of money for these basic cars.
It's all due to unemployment and the stimulus checks. All cars and car parts are inflated right to shit right now with all this money flying around. I own a few cars and buying parts for them has become impossible. What used to cost $200 now asks $400. What used to ask $3000 now asks $6000. It's ridiculous.
It will settle down, be patient.
It's everywhere man. I've seen non M E30's here in South Jersey for $10k plus along with tons of other cars that should be thousands less than what people are asking. Have to say though, FB Marketplace (at least near me) still is full of regular people asking realistic prices for E36's, E46's, E90's, Benz W211's, 204's, 212's, etc
Ah maan. I love your videos sooo much. Everyday I get off school, I just pop one on and it's so relaxing to watch and to listen to.... And I'm so jealous for all the epic cars you can drive
Thanks Andrew! I'm happy to share them with folks like you who appreciate such a wide variety of cars
I've got some things I'd like to comment on here. Gonna do it in order that they came up in the video (Yes, I made sure to watch it all first; this is me going through it again). Its long, and probably might even seem incoherent at times, but bare with me. Just kinda dumping my thoughts out that I had while (and after) watching. Thanks for the video, Tedward. 👍
Prius Driver Hate (2:31): At least for me, I don't think it was ever really about the car itself. I mean, the Prius was always just "meh" at best. Its the types of people that were drawn to the car that were the issue, I think, where you end up seeing people putting themselves on this pedestal of self-righteousness because they're "making a statement" or "doing the right thing" and everyone else is wrong. When in reality, the only statement you're making is that you're content with driving a mainly boring hatchback. And EVs seem to be drawing that same sort of crowd. Now, perhaps that's actually just a small percentage of owners and most people who bought them are just trying to save money, for both hybrids and EVs. But even if that's the case, there are definitely instances where it happens (I've seen it), and that's not the greatest image. Ditto on the coal rolling on Priuses thing later in the video, though; I hate coal rolling in general. Its just dumb.
Fuel Scarcity (7:17): This I see being a potential issue not just for enthusiasts, but also for those who don't tend to buy new cars. My family, for example, has never had a new car purchase. My parents only ended up getting newer vehicles a few years ago, and neither of them are newer than '08 or '09, IIRC. Maybe even a bit older than that. They also like to keep their cars going for as long as possible, and if they still run (and run well), they don't want to get anything newer. Its seen as a waste, because there's still plenty of life left in the car for them to use. This is perhaps only super common amongst those who are older, and even then it may actually be a fringe case, but the idea that people would be placed in a "Conform or Suffer" (an exaggeration, but you get the point) sort of scenario leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Especially considering all the ICE cars that will be left after the supposed shift to full EV production that will still have life left in them, there needs to still be legacy support at large. Or are we supposed to just ignore all that?
Anti-Antipollution (9:02): I think this is a counter-culture cycle type thing. I say cycle because in prior times, a "Save the planet!" type of message would come from a smaller group (the counter) and probably would've been met with something like "Eh, whatever. Hippie shit." and you'd move on (the culture). Over time though, it starts to gain more traction to the point where the former message becomes the more prevalent thinking (the new culture) and the latter response becomes the new counter to that. Because its the counter to "the norm", the attitude will be more extreme. Now, maybe its not an actual cycle, because that would imply that at some point people at large would go back to that original way of thinking. Maybe its instead just a generational thing, and apathy towards the environment will eventually just die because newer and newer generations will have the importance of it so hammered in right from the off. I suppose only time will tell.
The Real Fear (11:36): Isn't that kinda that same thing, though? The people that seem to be championing the EV the most right now are tech people, and they look at these cars in the same way you would look at a new phone or computer component. Its all numbers and statistics, because for something like a processor or a video card, that is what ultimately decides how much you can get from it and how much work or enjoyment it will allow you to do/have. As car enthusiasts, we know cars aren't 100% like that and that there's more to cars than just numbers, but I'd wager there's a lot less of us than there are techies. As for the people who don't really care either way, its a lot easier to look at numbers on a sheet and have someone who is more knowledgeable than you go "See these numbers? Bigger is better." My guess at what happens here is that the "tech think" will continue to grow and lead the charge, the people who don't know or care will follow because someone just said "This is better", and that puts pressure on us until we eventually follow suit or die off, and that's how this all ends. The people who care about cars then won't be the same or have the same priorities as those who do now.
Analog Experiences (12:06): This is something that I feel like we probably should've seen coming, because its happened before, just with different subjects. Watches, for example. Digital watches used to be all the rage, but that's just because it was the "new, cool thing". But there was only a matter of time before that "new, cool thing" isn't as new *or* cool anymore. A lot of people ended up just going back to analog watches, with the new "new, cool thing" being smartwatches. There might even be a time limit to that too, although I guess there's less of a chance since its just an extension of your phone pretty much. Synthesizers are another market this reminds me of, and a subject that I've started to take interest in (unlike watches; that was just an example from what I remember seeing and hearing). With the rise of digital FM synths like the DX7 that dominated the 80's, it seemed like the bigger, heavier, less efficient analog synths that came before were well and truly obsolete. But after that "new, cool thing" phase, we ended up with a bunch of (in comparison to past analog synths) really bland, characterless keyboards. They did the job, arguably massively better than those of the past, but they were missing something. Sounding familiar? In the current year, we can still buy new analog watches, and companies are now putting out new, great analog synths again. But what about cars? When the "new, cool thing" phase that is getting people to swap to EVs now ends and that honeymoon phase is over, will we still be okay with being locked into that arrangement?
New Cars Are Too Fast (13:21): Hard agree on this. Particularly on the point that releasing cars to the masses capable of 0-60 in sub-3 (or honestly even sub-4 or 5) seconds is stupid. Drivers nowadays can't even handle what we have now, but now we're getting on to the point from a few videos ago where people don't know or care about proper driving. I guess its all heading to that idea of an autonomous future where it doesn't matter if people know how to drive, because you won't be driving, whether you want to or not. *THAT* would be a truly grim future.
Overall, I'd agree that you probably have a lighter view on the subject than most. Definitely lighter than mine, but I've always tended to air more on the side of pessimism since it sadly seems more realistic. That said, a lighter view isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it likely means you'll be less emotionally charged, and can therefore bring a clear head to a conversation that normally wouldn't have many. Ultimately and ideally, I would like to see a solution that allows those who enjoy internal combustion to continue enjoying it to the fullest and those who don't care will take the electric alternative, especially in today's world where it seems like the overall sentiment is "Let me enjoy what I want how I want". But looking at it realistically, I'm not holding my breath for that to happen. Anyway, this rant has gone on long enough, and no one will probably read it anyway. If you happen to read though all this Tedward, cheers again for the video. Gave a lot to think about, as you can see. lol
I good read,
Naturally I disagree with some points. 13:21 I think that's more a fault of people becoming more aware of bad drivers (often more distracted). I hope tougher tickets on cell phone use might cause a change. But I suppse you're still right in some respect. And maybe this supports your point, but Related is the fact the the pioneering cars (teslas) are heavy on the driver assists and claim self driving capability, regardless of the truth.
Also regarding gas availability, I think with the amount of used gas cars on the market, gas stations will remain plentiful for many decades. I don't think this will be s bing an issue for nearly 30 years as both you and Tedward make it out to be.
I am entering college, so I fear my generation will have to deal with the effects of climate change, which is why I am so pro EV. I am fortuante enough to have learned to drive stick (and never driven an auto) so I do consider myself an enthusiast, but I am not worried, just like you, about car enthusiasts disappearing. As you mentioned, people have gravitated back to analog watches, audio systems, etc because of the enjoyment or purity. I almost find myself in the same boat as you, my family has never bought a new car. I just find myself on the opposite side, probably mostly because Im in a different generation.
You have a good point about cars in general being boring right now. Once automakers have EVs figured out, they’ll graduate to more niche varieties. The next Miata could be interesting as an EV for example. However it will be hard to replace the engagement offered by manual transmissions.
An ev could still have a manual transmission, that is how DIY EV builders have been doing it for decades
@@fast.biking_freddy it’s really not necessary though. At most I can see 2 gears like the Taycan, one for low speed torque and one for efficiency (range) at highway speeds as well as top speed. But anything more than that would be silly. Added complexity/maintenance and cost of manufacture. And that’s on top of manuals being nonexistent already today in the ICE world.
They’re gonna have to come up with something else. Maybe rockets like Elon teased, or green shells like Mario Kart lol
@@AdamKlingenberger well of course, but it would be for the enthusiasts. You could argue cars don't need to rev above 6k ever for example. But those that do are for enthusiasts
The only thing I am a bit afraid of is the pricing of enthusiast cars, and owning them becoming a privilige of the rich. It is in a way now, too - the truly interesting cars are costly and always have been -, but the thing I'm worried about is affordable enthusiast cars dying out as a category.
See, I'm 24. I had a few hobby cars already but since I'm not made of money, I live in a shitty country in the EU where even as a software dev I don't earn as much as the minimal wage in some countries to the west, and we're building a house the next 3-4 years, I didn't keep them, I drive the boring company Volkswagen Golf diesel.
Now that electric cars and regulations are closing in on us more and more, the prices for these used, actually fun old cars are CRAZY, and I think this is just the tip of the iceberg, we're going to see even crazier inflation of prices for these kinds of cars. The car I had and loved the most so far was a '97 BMW E36 328i convertible, I feel very bad for selling it to this day, don't even know why I did it, I just got fed up with its' issues one day and sold it the next to some guy at a car meet. I live in the EU, I got that car in 2017 for about $2500 in not nearly mint, but decent condition. Spent approximately another 2 grand on it for repairs and modifications, then sold it for about $3,8k last year.
Even since last year the prices for these E36s, especially with the larger I6 engines, went up like crazy. When I sold mine, I felt like "I'll build my house, then I'll buy another one with more options and a more interesting paintjob". Well now I feel like once the house is built and we have space and time for another hobby car yet again, the prices for these kinds of cars will be so up in the sky that I won't be able to justify spending that much on such an item to my wife. And that's just a damn E36, not even an M3 or a Porsche.
I have this very bad feeling that owning and driving somewhat interesting hobby cars will be a privilige of the rich, and average / poor people will not be able to get their hands on anything interesting. I feel especially sorry for the kids I want to have, I wanted them to be a part of this, too, to make them a car guy. But the way it's heading now, we probably won't be able to afford the car to get them into this world. Such a shame. Thinking about just getting some old Beamer in shit condition and putting it in a garage for the meanwhile, then get to restoring it once I can.
I’m really glad you raise this point since this is such an important part of this conversation. I share a similar concern - I too hope fun cars will still be relatively accessible to everyone from a financial standpoint and not just limited exclusively to the wealthy. The diversity of car people and car enthusiasm is a huge part of what makes the culture so fascinating. Hope that isn’t lost.
@@williamlong2682 Exactly. Cheap, fun cars are a great thing to have, and we would still have them if we still made them. But we don't really, or at least I can't find my happy place in a new hot hatch with lifeless small 4pot turbo engines. They have a fun factor but none of the old character, and these will be the cheap to get cars 10 years from now. I'm leaning towards getting some project car in crap condition and just putting it in storage, then getting to the restoration when I can. Might be worth it these days. But that's just me, it will still be very sad to see that car meets will be more of a rich man thing, and not a mixed thing like it is now, when the poorer can be creative and DIY stuff on their cars.
For sure. I’m looking to get my first enthusiast car, as right now I’m driving at 2004 rav4 with 350k miles on the clock. Not gonna last too long I’d doubt, so I’m in the market for something like a 350z or a miata so I can learn to work on cars. Just a couple years ago a miata ran 4-9k ish NZD depending on condition, but now anything decent is at least 14k. Younger generation car enthusiasts like myself will struggle to find anything nicer than a clapped out civic...
@@sebsteyn1592 I never owned a 350Z but we do have a Maxima QX 3.0 that we still use as a car for longer journeys... I mean, not "that" VQ engine, but it's a VQ engine nonetheless.
The Miata is the one car many people love that I never really understood. Sure it's a little gokart, I tried a 1.8 NB and even a turbocharged NC, somehow for roadsters a good sounding engine is a requirement for me which they can't do.
Swap a V6 in there though and I'm in love, wanted to do that some day as well, but getting the paperwork for that in my country is pretty much impossible.
@@alf279 I think the main reason people love them is that they (were) a reliable starter car that is easy enough to work on and learn mechanical skills. Sucks that they’re no longer available and younger enthusiasts have to go and fk up more expensive cars just for practice haha
I get what you mean about the horse power wars, i bought a 718 Cayman and soon realized that i should have bought a 718 Cayman S, however i soon learned that all i had to do was to leave the house 0.4 of a second earlier. Problem i have now is that i also bought a 1976 911S and now i have to leave the house a lot more often.
Love your work and your attitude Mr Tedward sir!
My problem with cars is that they're becoming too computerised. I'm fine with electric vehicles if they aren't built like a phone where it's like oh you haven't paid for premium only half power for you. Hopefully that'll just be a joke for the future but I fear that stuff not as extreme as that will happen.
That's already happening with lots of new cars unfortunately. There was an article about 10-15 years ago ridiculing micro transactions in phone games and programs saying it'd be as ridiculous as unlocking features in cars. Now that's normal and so will micros in cars in a few years
Yeah that’s not a joke. Tesla is installing heated seats hardware and locking it out in software. BMW tried to charge a subscription fee for CarPlay. Lexus charges a subscription fee for remote start from the key fob. Even though the fob has the button and the car is capable of it you have to pay monthly to make it work.
And then one day your car refuses to start on election day because the system knows you're likely to vote for the "wrong" candidate. But a few years after that, it will be a normal procedure for the system to lock you out of your car as a result of you getting banned on Twitter or something because all accounts are linked and controlled by Google.
@@turbo-qv1fy nah, I bet it happens where your car just demands a charge to start on Election Day. “Purchase 50 more premium miles for only $19.99!” And it’ll all be under the guise of reducing traffic congestion by making it more expensive to drive during peak hours. But of course it’ll be REALLY there to keep the “wrong” people from voting.
I’m pretty sure this is already happening with chips in ICE cars like the BRZ, they restricted HP in the non premium 2021 model I believe. (Could be wrong)
Great video and glad to hear your views on this stuff! I just wanted to say that I don’t think that enthusiast cars will ever go away because as cars become more and more electric, car companies will start doing things to make them more interesting or cooler than their competition for the enthusiast buyers. When we look back at like the early 2000s, people didn’t say cars like the e46 m3 or the s2000 or whatever were special or anything, but now we really admire them, so it just goes to show that things change and there will always be cars that become enthusiast cars to later generations. Between now and when cars go fully electric might be a bit awkward since everyone just wants a boring economical crossover, but eventually we’ll reach a point where we can stop focusing on making the most economical and practical car for the average buyer to save the planet, and more on making cooler electric cars for the enthusiasts that want them.
always comes back to this video, whenever I has some anxieties about the future of vehicles.. 😌
My big hangup on the move to EV is that it's short-sighted. To me (another 911 owner - 991.2), the best solution is a hybrid system. Use the batteries to assist or in conjunction with the gas engine. My Volt allows me to do most running around town without gas and I can go cross country without issue using gas. This is a much better solution and all non-Tesla's have a horrendous charging network. And most people can't afford a $40-200k EV, let alone have a place to charge it at home.
And I have ZERO guilt using gas. As long as cargo ships and commercial jets exist, my impact is MINISCULE.
I'm with you on the lack of guilt. Me puttering around for a few minutes, regardless of car, is absolutely fucking next to a cargo ship going for days. And for whatever reason (oh wait, it's because they actually don't care and it's all politics) there is barely ever a word said about that.
I hope I can find a clean 2014 STi hatch when I'm older and out of high school, it's one of my dream cars and I remember when it came out so well. I just got an '09 WRX hatch tho so I'm happy!
Greets from Germany. I bought a 911 G model in 93, modelyear 89. And I bought it with my mom, she drove it many times. Now, almost 30 years later, she sits in a wheelchair, does not even speak anymore. But putting her on the passengers seat and having a ride with her and it seems like I can see a smile on her face - no electric vehicle will ever be able to do that. I hope I'll get the permission to use that old (but perfectly maintained) little car at least once in a while when the green party here in Germany starts with all kinds of restrictions. So sad....
I really hope that synthetic fuels can step in and give the internal combustion engine a much longer lifespan. I’m 23 and I’m honestly really worried that by the time I’m 50 and can actually afford a vintage Porsche of my dreams, there won’t be any fuel to be able to actually use it
Look, I was born in 2003, my whole life I've been fascinated by cars.. and lately you have no idea how many times I've had anxiety attacks because I didn't know what to do at all because I felt my culture was doomed to die.. Everything I've ever wanted to do up to this point is being ripped away from me. So this video happened to come perfectly timed (Ik, late to come here but still)
same here... 😌 everything I liked from my childhood is being taken away..
My real issue is with the companies producing these things. The oil industry, the automotive industry etc. There have been several (now supposedly deprecated) studies about the dangers of battery production (an already huge and dangerous industry), the dangers of continuing the use fossil fuels (and not just in cars) etc. There are so many truths that are being kept from us due to financial interests, it just pains me. Cars are my escape from my life of study and politics and the world. Now it seems that the very same issues I fight against, are about to fundamentally change my hobby forever. I have no issue with EV's, ad machines. I actually had a lot of fun working with and driving them. But I do have an issue with the many unfortunate side effects of there production and maintenance. I don't think fossil fuels or EV's are the answer. But I do think the ICE shouldn't be killed off so quickly, by the major automakers. How many jobs will be replaced? How much infrastructure will have to change (and how will that impact the poorest communities in this country), how will the many of us who survived by maintaining out own equipment, and houses, and cars, continue into the future. We have all of this, while the richest men in the country continue to suck the wealth out of the global economy, and make people poorer, as they rewrite all of our systems and lifestyles to force us to have to spend more and more just to stay afloat. Sorry to rant. I have so much more to say about the future we are headed for if things don't change, but I'll stop by saying that climate change is going to be one of the worst, and most majorly catastrophic events in our history. But I strongly implore that we as a society do a little more research on why the events are occurring and who is truly responsible, before it's too late.
This video made me want a 911 like this one, own two 88 mod e34s, adore them! Loved the sounds and quality of late 80s German luxuries sporty cars!
Bro, I love the smell of NoX in the morning!
That’s actually one of my #1 routes in the area for a fun quick drive, gotta love that loop
I dislike EVs, autos, and digital dashes so I feel my choices for new cars are dwindling very fast
I thnk the solution is clear for us: Buy a classic for the raw experience you desire
This describes my feelings very accurately..
I strongly agree with you.
buy classics but look out for safety
I love this !!! More chats on life whilst driving your G body please !
Since the mx5 sells really well I hope it'll stay for another decade or 2 with NA gas engine.
Me too man, my dream car and I wanna be able to still get one used at a decent price, just gotta save some for a down payment.
it sells ok for what it is, but its nowhere near like mazdas SUV's. I think any future mx-5s will be collaborations just like they did with Fiat for the ND miata
Hopefully, my dreams don't slip away before I reach a point in my life where I can afford them and enjoy them, although I don't mind EVs that much.
I love EVs, in fact I want one for everyday use over my 09 mustang GT. But I'm afraid that in the next decade, any cool ICE car will become very expensive to even get into because people will just buy them up and create bubbles so they can cash out big as ICE productions come to an end.
Been waiting for this! 🔥🔥
Thanks for your videos. Yesterday i visited my car dealer (Porsche) in Germany. I can by without any wait directly 20 Taycan, but there are only 4 911s available. Beside of the showroom there is a place to load 12 Taycans. I talked with one of the service guys. He said to me: "Michael, this is the future". I smilled, opened a new 911 i have got for a test drive (my own 911 stayed for service) , and drove away. Some hours later i have tested the 911 s with 270 km/h on the Autobahn. I think, i will buy 5 911 in the next years (i hope it works), so i will have enough good cars until end of my life.
I am an original owner of a 1997 Honda Del Sol Si. My car is quick and it really handles. I love shifting my five manual. I. Hope to drive it as long as I am around.
I don't mind switching to EVs once they stop looking weird. The Honda E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 look great. Some trims of the Taycan look great. Everything else looks off.

Most people today leave the house after forgetting to charge their phones. Imagine leaving home with your EV and looking 15 mins into your drive for a charging station, only to find line ups waiting at charging stations beacuse there wont be enough of them. Remember to reifill with fuel only takes a couple of minutes, charging an EV will make you extremely late wherever youre going.Love the 911 .Subscribed.
These vlog type videos are awesome! So interesting to listen to
I’ve always thought a cool idea for enthusiast EVs would be to just attach manual transmissions to the cars and having simulated gears and simulated engine sounds and stuff. Just imagine you have the 2032 Tesla model W and you can switch between simulated V8s V10s I4s etc and the motors simulate those power bands. You could have every sports car bundled into one
For me at least, that would be absolutely awful.
It's a nice idea but it would still be and feel artificial. You can't replicate the smell and all the sounds made by ICEs. The feel, perhaps.
@@nvl2691 It's just fake.
Certainly agree with the manual transimssion but not with the sound part.
I like your page because it reminds me how I drive around my state when Im working something out in my mind 😂
As automotive enthusiasts, it's our responsibility to recommend and promote alt. fuel vehicles to not only preserve the environment, but to also preserve our cars that burn old dinosaurs. So, next time you see an alt. fuel vehicle on the road don't groan, downshift, and pass it agressively. Instead, smile and appreciate what that driver is doing for you and the planet you live on.
bingo!
exactly.. inorder to have a bright future for ICEs, EVs should exist more for non ICE enthusiasts
Very good analysis. As someone who was in high school in the 80’s, I am extremely pleased with the rebirth of muscle cars in the last 10 years. Electric will never take over 100%, because the electric grid in our country is vastly behind the times. Even tree hugging California had to turn off the grid (rolling blackouts) in Silicon Valley last year during the summer because the grid couldn’t meet the electric power demand. And Microsoft’s main campus has had multiple power outages in the past few years. If one of the richest companies on the planet can’t arrange for a stable electricity source, what does that imply for the rest of the country.
The way our current government and administration is going, along with the crazy loones who want to forcea hard change on everyones way of life in the name of climate change. I would not put it past them to force us into a system that is not viable. There was already an article that said "its 2030, you own nothing and you will love it".
Sounds like they'll just drag us kicking and screaming into their version of reality. regardless whether its viable or not.
Just bought a GD STi. My first manual transmission vehicle. Car culture is alive and well
Congrats on the car!!
@@TedwardDrives thank you! It’s a nice compliment to my macan turbo and 996 tiptronic. Loving those whoosh noises
I like your positive outlook on the topic and I would agree with you that the goals are a bit lofty considering the amount of infrastructure it would take to make 100% conversion to EV. We regularly see rolling brownouts in California already. How is the grid going to “overnight” support the new demand? Where i see the issue is the simultaneous attack on the aftermarket. A massive part of being an enthusiast is enjoying the modification process. It is art for many of us. An expression. Much of the frustration, I would argue, does not come from the evolution of the industry or the advance of EVs. Its the attack on the enthusiast and supporting market-parts, tuners, etc. in an attempt to fast track the these ideas.
In my opinion I think that all normal boring cars definitely should go full electric, so that way car companies can keep making ICE enthusiast cars while also having a net positive impact on the environment (except dodge maybe since everything they have comes with a supercharged 6.2 lol)
Something a lot of people forget when it comes to this topic, is that kit cars exist.
Even if the sale of production ICE cars is outlawed, the laws regarding kit cars are much more lenient. Even if the relics of the ICE Era are priced steeper and steeper after the point of no return, kit cars are likely not only going to be around, but flourish! People will pay good money to make cheaper versions of a car they can't ever realistically afford , and to their credit some kit cars are really nice. Plus, they can be more modernized than the original to solve design issues as well as provide conveniences that the actual car never could.
For example, you can buy a LB Specialties STR for around $70k. You can also change specs to taste for the engine, paint and various other aspects. An *actual* Lancia Stratos? I've seen them go anywhere from $400k-700k based on condition, and you're basically stuck with it as-is, fearing the slightest ding, scratch, or odd noise from the engine bay. The only thing you'd be missing would be the history, but then you have to ask: Is the history worth that much to most people?
kit cars and decentralized car production are the future. as someone who has worked in the auto industry, there is too much bloat and bureaucracy keeping large firms afloat to mass produce garbage. production no longer requires 100's of people per component, and assembly can be done by most at home provided the correct tools. most car companies and companies in general are shackled by the politicization of the labor force (votes for jobs/contracts) which does nothing but drive quality down and price wayyy above actual cost. its time to get off the brand name hype and go for companies made up of people doing what is in the best interest of their customer base,
even if the laws arent as lenient towards kit car ICE manufacturers, there are plenty of technological advancements that can be made to defeat the emissions issue present with burning hydrocarbons. those innovations will never appear within a company that is focused on stock valuation first and consumers way down the line, its literally impossible for a group like that to create something innovative. all of the great vehicles in history were made by men and women driven to create something special and stand the criticism of time.
history repeats, there once were hundreds of auto makers in the past and with standardization of tooling and components shall return stronger.
Soon us software engineers will be the tuners of the future 😂
This was a very nice monologue
Your takes on this are pretty good. I pretty much feel the same way.
What a lucky guy, that 911 is a real beaut 😍
Well put, intelligent view.Don’t crush your lovely Porsche.
Agree 100% with you. The majority of new IC vehicles are crossovers with crappy CVTs and numb electric power steering, so the war is lost. Even if you manage to find a newer car with a stick, a lot of them have crappy shifters and clutch pedals because the manufacturers put no effort into them (I’m looking at you Volkswagen!)
IC vehicles will probably become expensive leisure activities like horses. If you’re an enthusiast, find something rust free with hydraulic or manual steering and a manual transmission and put it in storage. E-fuels will hopefully allow us to drive them in the future
4:48. Looks like a commuter rail parking lot around NYC tho. #trains for daily driver, sportscar for weekend fun.
Ancient trains that are never on time haha. We need high speed railways that can cover actual distance in comfort. I’d love to do that instead of flying
In the UK they will raise the prices of owning a combustion engine until you have to have an electric vehicle. Otherwise the change won't happen.
Porsche investing in synthetic fuel is genuinely our only hope
Unless they can figure out how to make it somewhere else, and NOT in South America,we're toast.
Your comment here is what not a single person ever talks about. Car culture will just become another thing for the wealthy, unless we actually push back against that type of stuff. as well as people only after the values of cars.
Love this body style of the porsche🔥
I'am in my mid 20's and i try to buy as many cars I can and have the money to maintain them. In 10-20 years they will probably be way above my possibilities, but know I can afford them. The biggest problem at the moment is space to store them :D For Fuel, I don't see that as a big problem, most petrol cars could easily be converted to Biofuel. You can't produce enough Biofuel to power the whole world but for the classic car / Car Collector Community it should be more than enough. Personally I have no problem if I have to drive a EV as a daily and on the weekends i can drive my old petrol cars.
I don’t see ICE cars going out of style within the next 30 years, I do see the US and other countries taxing the hell out of owning a ICE car
A lot of European countries already have ridiculous taxes on ICE cars. Especially if they have a 8 cylinders or more. For a new BMW M5 you have to pay €13.000 just to get it on the road and €2500/year to keep it on the road in my country. For a new Lamborghini aventador (I kid you not) it is €401.000 in taxes lmao
More and more European cities also introduce low-emission zones, only newer ICE cars are allowed in these cities. The LEZ in my nearest city only allows cars that were made after 2006

Another issue is that these laws against ICE cars are being made by politicians who don't drive themselves (have drivers, fly private jets, etc.). These people don't care about cars like enthusiasts - and don't "get it".
I think we all should think where petrol cars will be in five, ten years. Ted, you may have already seen the paucity of competent mechanics for air-cooled Porsche vehicles, I have certainly seen it with my 56 Beetle, and unfortunately so shall it be for ICE vehicles. As technology pushes us forward, everything we think as normal will be obsolete - just think where we were with computers, digital cameras, and automobiles just 40 years ago. Gad! The world is moving too fast. Let us stop and appreciate what we still have! Great video!
The main issue for me right now isn't electrification. I'll miss all my favorite ICE sounds, but I'm confident EVs can still be fun cars to drive, especially when batteries get lighter. Right now, well for the last decade at least really, the main issue for me has been that damn near everything is an SUV, and there are very few affordable options for the average car enthusiast. It's worse if you're tall like me. I just can't fit in a MX-5, a BRZ, or an 86.
yeah...I wish even if we are forced into an EV only future, I hope there's more driver involvement.. just throttle down those driver assists,no one pedal driving (instead regen braking ahould be controled by a 3rd pedal) etc..
or technology must advance quick enough to a point so that personal flying vehicles like the jetson one, or hoverbikes like the oppressor in GTA online, etc. become a norm.. 😂
Absolutely perfectly put. Though I would like to add that the potential advent of synthetic fuels could be a good thing for us lot.
I definetely agree that not everyone should be able to do 0-60 in 3 seconds..
I never got the hate for EVs and the hate for ICE cars by EV drivers. I own a 96 Miata and a 2014 Chevy Volt. They’re both great cars in their own ways. I love the silence and convenience of electric and I love the sports car feel of the Miata. I recognize that one day it may be really expensive to own an internal combustion engine car and I’m okay with that so technology can move forward, and at the same time I recognize that ICE cars will be around for a long time to come and enthusiasts will keep them alive.
Plus, I’m sure there will be tons of fun electric cars. Electric 2030 Miata? Sign me up.
I find myself thinking about this a lot, and I share many of the same sentiments. I didn’t really get re-interested in cars until 2014ish. It’s 2021 now, seven years from then - about 1 average product life cycle. And I often I feel like I’ve witnessed the one last generation of new cars I’ll be excited about. New cars are becoming wayyyyyy too numb and computerized for my taste, and technology is just getting over-the-top. I definitely wish there were more analog driving experiences in the new car market. And I’ll admit - I was one of those who saw EV’s (especially Teslas) as a threat. I’ve come around to them somewhat and I get they make a lot of sense as A-to-B daily drivers, but I just don’t see them as terribly exciting from an enthusiast standpoint, no matter how instantaneous their torque may be. I do think hybrid technology is something we should be taking advantage of more, especially to keep NA engines relevant. Ultimately I just hope we can pass down our passion for driving and analog cars to that next generation and keep the enthusiasm alive.
Great talking, I agree on most points (and disagree on none). That sideways-mounted tach is bothering me, though!
Something I have been thinking a lot about lately, excellent topic. First thing that should be addressed when it comes to pollution is industry that are known polluters rather than transportation. When it comes to transportation; again I would think trucking like transport and delivery could go full electric before passenger cars. With that said, I think there will be a demand for petrol cars for many years to come. While electric cars are the future, there will always be a market for people who wish to enjoy the true naturally aspirated atmospheric engines. Whether that is with gasoline or an alternative fuel conversion, well, that is up for debate. Many years in the future,; meaning past our lives; I think cars like this will still continue on even 50 years from now. Although, like you eluded much more similar to owning a horse today; something generally only a wealthy person is capable of possessing.
Great video Tedward! The Porsche still sounds great! I have friends who think armageddon is coming with the new regulations. I agree with more of your points that it's not really the end for car enthusiasts. You are also right about boring cars. I drove a 2021 Cadillac XT5 for a few days.. While the tech and ride is nice, it doesn't give me that fizz.
Its not going to be the end, thats just the crazies talking. What I am afraid of is the cost to even own ICE cars will become so prohibitively expensive for the working class that it will just become a thing for the rich or anyone who makes over 200k just buy themselves, not accounting for their spouse.
Car prices are already on the upswing for anything cool, Depreciation times are much shorter thanks to the internet and I feel that with things going to more EVs, Any cool ICE car will begin to experience the muscle car and 911 bubble and skyrocket out of most peoples hands. Thats if we can afford to even keep the ones we already have if we arent loaded with disposable income.
if Insurance and maintenance go through the roof, we working class people wont be able to own them without massive sacrifices. But this is just a concern, and one thats unrealistic like Car culture dying completely and no one being able to drive gas powered cars.

This is what I am trying to tell my people, it is not all about power! Or how quick a vehicle can reach 60mph.
Yo I’m the from the same area, just discovered your Chanel but I’ve definitely seen your car around.
Perhaps there's a future where EV's can still offer that visceral experience by offering stripped down models (sound deadening) with acoustic and mechanical feedback of the analog era. Cars have enough speakers for a Dolby Atmos setup, electric steering can be tweaked, you can do manual transmissions on electric motors.
This video gave me hope for the future. We’ll be fine
Maybe not actually. We have to worry about collectors and investment people, They might make car culture a thing that people with money can really only enjoy. Not something a 19 year old can.
I own a 1989 Honda Prelude Si 4WS. Here is what is going on with 3rd gen preludes: Parts are scarce, a lot of manufactures are discontinuing support, even aftermarket, for these cars. As a result, people have started to hoard parts and parts cars, driving the cost of the parts for repair through the roof. For example, my crank pulley was going out, had visible damage, nobody sells the pulley anymore and all aftermarket ones have been discontinued for a while. I either would have to fork over $350 for a used crank pulley or send my old one off to a machine shop to have a new one made for $400. These pulleys were only $60 when they were in production. Then the parts hoarders hold onto as many parts as they can, even if they will never need them. Some guy was bragging that he had 5 sets of OEM wind deflectors but refused to sell them because he might need them if he breaks them. Prices for these cars have also skyrocketed, someone was selling a beat-up, carb base model with 200k miles, not running for $6700, and they actually sold it at the asking price. It sucks for me because this once easy and expensive to maintain sports car now has become so expensive to just repair I almost want to sell it. It sucks.
post an ad on craigslist or forums to hire an engineering student to reverse engineer your car. might cost you a bit, but if you pool in money with the remaining prelude owners it wont be as bad per person. then whenever something breaks, you build it yourself. sounds crazy but ive had to do this exact process (lucky for me, hiring yourself is easy) to restore some discontinued parts on my own old cars
EVs and ICEs can coexist, but cars with souls never gets old.
My dream car is a 1969 camaro and I won’t let anything get in my way to get my hands on one

It is interesting to think what this may mean for mechanic costs when we do approach 50%+ of the population driving EVs, and enthusiasts with vintage or IC cars need work done on their car.
Damn... Those roads are horrendous, Ted. Got dizzy from all the shaking :)
Some of it's the time of year. In New England, frost heaves in winter well-up pockets under the simpler (not deeply layered) roadways. Then, in spring the welled-up pockets collapse: creating potholes. Similarly, already patched pavement crumbles as freeze-thaw cycles damage them. The 'cheap' solution is only temporary: fill the new pothole or crumble with cold patch.
U should do more of these man
