10 Stupidly Fast Guitarists in Metal

- In this video I watch Loudwire's "10 Stupidly Fast Guitarists In Metal." Do you agree with this shred lord list? In my humble opinion, speed is only useful in the service of a song. Speed for the sake of speed is merely athletic performance. If you can play fast while also playing musically, you win big muhahaha. Learn more about how to shred musically with my music theory course below.

4. Michael Angelo Batio
3. Jason Becker (copyright removal)
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
1. Paul Gilbert
I think i have to agree with you, the speed can be an athletic showmanship, but to force it into the context of a song and create something memorable or catchy thats where the magic lies. Nice vid thanks for sharing
musical shredding is something very few master muhaha
So check out Dave Suzuki
IMO Warren DeMartini is one of the best in that sense.
That's why dimebag was always my favorite.
That's the driving force, the reason why even today at 2021 school kids local band still loves to play METALLICA
No Lars Ulrich??? Rigged
Muhahaha
Do you mean Dave Ulrich?
It's because he left the fooking band
Where's petrucci?!
@@Urnm-jy4bg and he is a guitarist right
Agree with Paul at 1. The intro solo to his instructional video is the most insane speed and ferocious picking I’ve seen. I’d put MAB a close second.
I agree with Paul being on the first place, but i thought that John Petrucci would be on some spot and i reaaly thing that he is missing on that list
Gilbert's clarity, precision and speed are unmatched in my book. I remember Vinnie Vincent was pretty fast too.
No one can match Shawn Lane's speed and precision, though...
@Mark Seymour Shawn Lane could do those crazy shred lines live, too. Don't know if delay works for concerts, though.
Hey! No 7th dimension aliens allowed!
I think Chris Impellitteri should've been on here, but everyone seems to forget about him, lol.
... also TONY McAlpine! 🌪️
@@waynewells359 actually he was playing keys (with a guitar strapped around his neck) during the Steve Vai clip.
Also michael romeo should be here but loudwire dude is 12 y.o kid
As well as carrying lead vocals! Yes he is a monster too
Chris is actually on another List it’s Top 10 fastest guitarists and he’s number 2 on the list, not only Chris but the band Impellitteri as a whole doesn’t get the love they should
Still waiting on an EVIL Through the Water and the Waves YT short.
Muhahaha
I remember meeting Michael Angelo at a guitar show in the UK years ago. We queued up for an autograph expecting a ponsey show off but he couldn't have been more humble and took the time to have a chat even with the queue. Really nice bloke!!
If we are going strictly speed the list is flawed. Shawn Lane, John Petrucci, Rusty Cooley, Chris Broderick and Jeff loomis need to be here
Yes also Chris Impellitteri, Bruce Bouillet, Marshall Harrison.....
yo onitan fs
Shawn Lane hands down
Kiko too
Francesco Fareri.
I don't get why these lists never have Tosin Abasi. The guy is fast, innovative, and creates some of the most unique music out.
Where is shred on this list. He is the only man that can play at 666 bpm
shred cant play fast
@@sebg2086 he can.
@@sebg2086 He Can bro
If you're down, I'd love to hear you cover some buckethead stuff. He's got a wide range of ability, from the shred stuff he's known for to more mellow stuff from his album Colma.
My list, in no particular order:
John Petrucci
Yngwie Malmsteen
Alexi Laiho (when he was sober enough to play clean, that is)
Michael Angelo Batio
Rusty Cooley
Marshall Harrison
Andy James
Paul Wardingham
Al Joseph
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Great list. I might add Jason Richardson

"If you can play fast while also playing musically, you win big muhahaha". in this particulair context we need to add to the list:
- John Petrucci;
- Joe Satriani;
- Eric Johnson;
- Micheal Romeo;
- Rhoads;
- Steve Morse.
And many more.
I was a little surprised Darryl Abbott wasn't on the list. I watched him play a few times and almost went cross-eyed.
Sooooo good
yeah dude ripped better than yngwie ever will
Thought the same
Amazing guitarist, but he really wasn't that fast. He had enough speed for his style, sure, but in my opinion his Guitar God status had more to do with attitude and note choice than it did his speed.
@@kungfuman82 2nd half to his solo in "Cemetary Gates" with that legato flurry of uprising notes was like 10-11 notes per second - that is blindly fast.
MAB is the Guinness record holder for an accurate fastest play, as I remember. He should be #1.

I have been taking Paul Gilbert's artist works class for a while now, what is really cool about Paul is that he has tremendous enthusiasm for the guitar, he makes tons of videos for people giving tips and his insights and seems to really love helping people maybe even more so than playing, he is also a grandmaster of the "guitar face". You really make the squeals sound a lot better if you have the right face displayed at the time, a little too late or too early and it loses effect.
Jason Becker is a legend, I missed him.
Got to meet Jason and Marty after their last gig with Cacophony (they fired the singer that night). Hooked them up with a huge 4th of July bonfire party, gave the roadies fireworks. They were from CA and never get to do them, and were squealing like 6-years-olds. Got a bit of a lesson from Jason. Jason and Marty signed my guitar (an HM Fender also signed by Greg Howe). Marty hooked up with an Asian chick I worked with, disappeared, and we never saw him again - lol
@@radiatefromhere that's an awesome story thanks for sharing
Me Shawn lane is legend
I am not fan on the super speed solos. I prefer soul in the solos as marty friedman does! Bucket for me is a exceptional artist in his context... He plays perfectly in their concerts with that thing in his head.... Amaizing👹
How about jason becker?
@@masterdingus7074 good question... Jason becker is one of my next musicians I want to explore... I like to listen him with a lot of calm ( I do not have too much time 😅)... It seems he has been one of the best (I feel deep pain for his actual situation....) at this moment I am listening kiko loureiro... And bucket head.... Maybe this christmas I will start listening him... But I do not know why Friedman has an special "Halo"... He is mysthic
@@bonesandrolls6402 well. Speaking of marty friedman..i would hope you've heard of Cacophony. Which was marty friedman and jason becker in a super duo. If you like marty friedman and you havent listened to cacophony yet you'll love it. The singer isnt the best but he isnt in every song
@@masterdingus7074 If Bones and Rolls doesn't like super speed solos, then he's really going to hate Cacophony or that Friedman solo album...
Which is a shame because they are... scarifying.
@@rozhtdestvensky 😂😂step by step, I said I am not big fun of super speed solos, but it does not mean I do not like at all. Super speed combined with fast is good😄. Anither topic, any musician can have different styles, I would like more some of them, and other ones less...it doesn't care. I didn't hear that album... Now I have put as background music and I like it, but I have to hear it with detail to check what is my final feeling on every track of the album. Thank you for the recommendations 👍😊. Music is infinite
Buckethead is just so fucking good.
"He's aight."
-about to be punched for his honest opinion
Buckethead is ashamed of his own playing. That is why he wears a mask and a stupid bucket hat.
@@gandalf8216 he's released 250+ albums. I can get you a playlist. To me he's like an extension of Metallica's instrumental songs. He has many that are on par with The Call of Ctulu or Orion. (he plays every style of music there is, but he definitely nails that genre HARD.)
If you're an anti-noodler check out "Claymation Courtyard".
@@johnp.johnson1541 Elementary school put down to feel an artificial self esteem boost noted.
@UCYqEyrI8uE6-dXEsRCN0Vsw you’re a fucking smoke show lmao buckethead has and has put out more amazing music than all other 9 of these people combined.
I think based on what jason becker has faced more than half of his life , he could have been number 1 easily. Just Imagine the guy is number 3 just out of 3-4 years of his life playing guitar. If he didn't contract ALS, his speed, and tastiness would have gone beyond human.
Good point about EVH & RR!
Im finally getting to the point where I know the modes when I hear them in a song. I honestly never thought Id ever figure it out but the hard work paid off.
U hit the nail on the head about EVH and RR. There’s were GREAT songs that happened to ALWAYS have insane guitar playing. U need the song first so that non guitar fanatics can also enjoy. Sadly, most missed this part of Sunday school...more intent on “look at me mom !I’m soooo fast!!!”,
Gilbert has forever been one of my tops can write and play any genre. Knows when to back it off, knows how to be musical with his “weapon of mass destructive speed”.. knows how to be more expressive with it.
None of these shredders would be in this list if in 1983 a Swedish lad called Yngwie hadn't arrived in the US to totally change the game for the 3rd time in history (previously landed from the outerspace JH and EVH). Good video mate 👍 🤘🤘🤘
If I don't see Cardi B on this list I'm going to be dissapointed
They have to be
Or April Gold
same
I was expecting most of these guys, but this list is legit for including Michael Angelo Batio, not a lot of people know him
"I think she's playing 'The Flight Of The Bumblebee" but I'm not sure"
If you're not sure, then it's played wrong.
WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK THIS SONG SHOULD BE PLAYED FAST?! THERE IS A SET TEMPO ON THE ORIGINAL FOR A REASON
Whoa there, gatekeeper.
My top 5:
1- Roy Clark
2- Chet Atkins
3- Zakk Wylde
4- EVH
5- Shawn Lane
When he does this kind of stuff, I’m just like, “What is even happening?”
That was hilarious lol
I've been a Paul Gilbert fan since day one. But let's be honest, Michael Angelo Batio is faster.
But boring
If you want to see arguably the smoothest and fastest shredder ever, look up Dave Uhrich and the song Fury. Smoothness and speed at the same time. Ed and Randolf are my favs as well.
I bought the fretnotised cd years ago, some really great stuff on that.
Daves entire first album is what made me get my technique as clear as possible. His slow jams had the same amount of variety as his fast stuff. Amazing player
The thing with MAB is he can do everything anyone else can do just as fast....while playing left or right handed.
I promoted MAB's album called No Boundaries in 1995- 96 I swear the man has two separate and independent brains!
The fastest guitar player of history is and will be ever Shawn Lane..
I don’t know if he was the fastest, but definitely one of them. And don’t forget Vinnie Vincent.
@@nickchucky3173 Vinnie Vincent is good, but he is simply fast as a lot other milions guitar player..nothing of more..He isn't not really clean..Shawn Lane is an another history, another planet in every sense..much more and more speed, technic, harmony, control, taste of phrasing, difficoult phrasings..exuse me my wrong english!!
How about Reb Beach from Winger? That guy has some impressive speed, especially on the ‘Seventeen’ Solo
I agree/ he's so underrated I think because he chooses melody first
I remember reading in an interview by EVH saying that he didn’t play as fast as he could because there was no point, that the notes just blurred.
I agree 100% shredding 4 shredding sake is awesome but gimme the old school greats like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Gary Moore, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, etc... guys who had it all not just technique.
Shred, your comments about Randy and Eddie were spot on. Thanks for the video...
Impressive shred ur content just get better and better every single day 👍🏻
In no particular order, some of the fastest metal players I've heard are: MAB, Yngwie (before his accident), Rusty Cooley, Tiago Della Vega, Jason Becker, Jeff Loomis, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert (more of a rock player though), Buckethead, Vinnie Vincent (don't like his style, but he was fast), and Zakk Wylde (when he started with Ozzy). There's a ton more though. By the way, The "Great Kat" sounds like the great shat in this clip.
It's been literally years since I've actually laughed out loud at something in a video and the keys to the Lamborghini got me
Buckethead’s talent makes me weep.
Two missing... Ritchie Kotzen and John Norum. Your videos are great!!! Love how you are always quoting the Devil every note outta the major and minor scales... That always cracks me up...
Oh hell ya..Richie Kotzen..he not only shreds better than anyone on this list (when he was younger) but he is also by FAR the best soloist, song writer and singer on the planet!
@@chimster1234 Ritchie's Rock Chops video helped me a lot with leggato playing, sweep picking arpeggios and ways to speed up memorizing scales all across the fretboard. He was only 19 years old when he recorded it. A true genius.
Once I told a friend of mine "If Steve Vai makes love to his guitar while playing... Ritchie Kotzen gangbangs it..." Hahahahaha
My list:
Chris Impelliterri
Michael Angelo Batio
Rusty Cooley
Buckethead
Paul Gilbert
Bruce Bouillet
Mick Thomson
Jason Becker
Steve Vai
Marty Friedman
Marty Friedman is able to shred but has the ability to play anything really really well, he isn't even my favorite guitarist but I feel like he is more versatile while no less proficient. He's higher than #10 imo. After thinking about it, Kirk Hammet and Marty are different from their other bandmates in a somewhat comparable way. I'm not saying they're similar sounding however.
Hammett is not even close to anyone on this list.
@@nickchucky3173 I didn't say that he does. I was comparing the similarities in solo and lead composition between the lead guitarists of 2 of the biggest OG thrash bands. The both employ some of the same interesting interval choices.
@@warpdriveby I think it depends on the album. From Countdown To Extinction and on, Friedman relied a lot on pentatonic licks, while he’d been more modal before.
@@nickchucky3173 Yeah, I was thinking more Rust In Peace and Countdown. The pentatonic, Mixolydian, minor crossovers in particular
I'm oldschool. When you said Eddie and Randy. You have my undying support
To me, Michael Angelo Batio is the Ultimate Virtuoso. I still think he's better and faster than all. The dual ambidextrious guitar seperates him from the rest.
MAB has been in my personal #1 spot for years. The rest you can put in any order you want. The only one I’ve never heard of is the Kat character.
OMG! The Great Kat!! I remember her. I bought her album when I was a teenager and she put her phone number in there. So of course I had to call her. Since she was in New York, I “borrowed” a telemarketing office phone. My long distance phone card was already maxed - this was the early 90’s. Anyway, Kat answered my call, and was pissed that I woke her up- whoops, time zone differences… She sounded like Marge Simpson’s sister, but was ultimately cool and nice to me.
I don’t know why but this guy really cracks me up. He’s kinda like Zakk Wylde, where he’s monotone and serious looking but then cracks jokes you wouldn’t expect him to make. Love the videos, hope me calling you monotone didn’t offend you, but compared to someone like Charlie Day or something everyone’s monotone. Enjoy the commentary though, keep it up
Stephen Taranto has the speed of these guys (if not greater) and actually makes it sound musical
Sonia Anubis, she's relatively new, did an album with Burning Witches before joining Fernanda Lira and Luana Dametto from Nervosa to form the death metal band Crypta.
Sadly, she didn't stayed very long with Crypta. She now plays in Cobra Spell. AFAIK, they play 80s Metal/Glam Metal.
@@NASCARaddicted Yeah, but she's still an amazing guitar player. I like Cobra Spell, kinda reminds me of Warlock meets Vixen, very 80s.
Something that goes unstated quite often is that the tone and effects can contribute a lot to the perception of speed. Even what you play makes a difference. Playing lots of wide intervals at 170bpm can sound just as fast as playing scales at 200bpm, like an auditory illusion.
1:55 *Slurp* *Slurp* “Gimmeee that delicious *Flllaavvoorr* “ 😂
I loved those OG Shrapnel guys back in the day. Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Greg Howe, Richie Kotzen, Michael Lee Firkins, and of course Jason Becker...just to name a handful of guys that were fantastic players and extremely fast. Paul Gilbert does deserves the top spot (Bruce Bouillet was a hell of a player too). Yngwie was the first guy most of us heard shred at breakneck speed if you were a teen or older in the 80's, so he will always deserve his due. Shout out to Jeff Loomis; first heard Nevermore back in 1999, Dreaming Neon Black. Loved the band immediately and he quickly became a favorite of mine, I was already a huge fan of Tim Calvert and Forbidden which is how I discovered Nevermore.
Shawn Lane is faster than every single one of these guys and far more scarier😳
Maybe not as ingestible compared to THE LIST but still the fastest
💯
He was blazing fast on piano too.
*Where is Chris Impelliteri, Rusty Cooley and Shawn Lane..?*
Alex Lifeson of Rush smokes them all....not for speed, but for sheer taste and originality.
If we’re talking purely about speed, I think it has to be Batio at #1. Gilbert and Yngwie definitely go in the top 3. If it’s fast + musicality, it’s Yngwie.
Always said Ed goes up to 85mph. I don't have the ability Nor desire to go faster. Its a good feeling knowing that I'm Not always going uphill. For u guys that play Flight of BBee. God bless ya
Joe Stump of course. George Bellas, Cesario Filho, Simon Thorolfsson & Daniel Mani Konradsson (Ophidian I), Dean Lamb & Tobi Morelli (Archspire), Phil Tougas & Nick Miller (First Fragment) to name a few mind-blowing guitarists.
How come Ralph Macchio isnt on the list? I saw him beat Steve Vai in that movie.
Fastest I have ever seen is the guitarist from from a Hungarian band called Napra. Song name is - Jaj, a világ! (Oh, what a World!). You should check it out.
Thoughts on Ron Jarzombek? He's my hero
He is cool AF
@@ShredmasterScott Friedman also idolatrize him, we are men of culture ☕🧐
Jarzombek is a MONSTER! His brother is equally a monster on drums too.....Spastic Ink 🤘🤘
there's a lot of guys that were missed on here including myself David Shankle Joe stump Rusty Cooley Andy James and Definitely Chris Impellitteri.
Why would playing music from Jason Becker be a copyright violation and playing music from the other players not be? He's the least popular of them all, as far as record sales. Doesn't make sense.
I agree with the EVH & Rhodes comment, Shred! Context is king when song building. That said, all these shredders are awesome!!
Macheal angelo adalah salah satu legenda player music dunia yang pada jamannya berpengaruh di blantika musik di era itu dan memiliki karakter tersendiri
How was Rusty Cooley not on here? There are many great guitarists missing that I would put in here over some.
Lmao " I don't eat donuts!!"
Joe Stump is one as well :) he’s amazing and a great teacher
They picked a really bad Buckethead lick. He's way better than that.
It’s normally what he plays when he plays fast
Its just the tone was a bit off
Andy Laroque or any others who played solos alongside him on the various classic King Diamond albums would be who I'd pick for speed plus soulful playing.
I know that Mr. Diamond himself is a great composer and probably helped push these guys to their phrasings limits.
Absolutely. Very melodic as well.
Andy Larocque is my all time favorite Metal guitarist bar none.
The list is great but you may include Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Chris Impelliteri and Michael Romeo, Vinnie Moore and Tony Macalpine. To me Shawn Lane(R.I.P.) was the fastest of all time but was a jazz-fusion player.
its not his list, thats the loudwire vid
@@lmao7439 Don't get me wrong, the list is great, I just added some missing names of the fastest shredders.
I would add Al DiMeola
@@leblon712 It seems that is more rock & metal players. Di Meola is great but Shawn Lane was the man in the world of fusion players.
It's nice to see that sole of the comments suggest some of the newer guitar players in the scene like Stephen Taranto who is an absolute beast of a player, and currently one of my favourites.
You need to do a video about speed. You read online about alternate picking "speeds" of more than 18 nps or 24 nps!!! which is insane (and as far as I am concerned impossible). I personally believe top of the line shredders are clear and accurate around 13-15 nps AT BEST and that is insanely fast. At 16 nps I think you loose track of what's played and its more blurry rather than note per note playing. What do you think?
Im surprised MAB wasnt nr 1, i mean he plays super fast as a lefty / righty / upside down and all at the same time
Michael Paget of bullet for my valentine should at least get an honorable mention.
I had the honor of having the same principle guitar teacher that Buckethead had for years and his name is Pebber Brown. Great guy and another wellspring of knowledge on music, guitar and long flowing hair like our man Shred here. 👌🏾
I also much prefer EVH and Randy Rhoads (and also Dimebag Darrell, Kirk Hammett, Zakk Wylde and Slash) to any of the players on this list. But where is Vinnie Moore? He's up there with Yngwie as far as super-fast neoclassical shredding goes.
I love Buckethead's music. All these guys are great, but Bucket's music reaches me in a different way. So many styles, so much that he says through his guitar.
He hits Emotions.
You forgot just of the top of my head guys like Joe Stump, Pop Voravit, Chris Impellitteri or Shawn Lane
Honorable mention- Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Tony McAlpine (who you saw behind Vai on keys), Greg Howe
Michael Romeo from Symphony X should be on the list
Michael Angelo Batio is fastest IMO being 6 feet away his hands are a blur when he cuts loose.
So precise and clean with each note and none of the other shredders can play that clean..
MAB is a super nice guy too and will talk your ear off about how he does things.
Chris Impelliterri rates up there too and still shreds very nice guy as well.
In terms of notes per second, MAB might be the king? Some of his solo stuff is stupid fast. Paul Gilbert too but he's also had great commercial success with Mr Big and all. Honourable mention for John Petrucci, anyone who's done Rock Discipline will remember those stupid fast chromatic runs he had us doing: 'Lets say 200bpm was hard...'
The Loudwire shredder intro need his/her spotlight too...
What about special bonus Akira Takasaky? From loudness
I thought Jeff Waters of Annihilator might get a spot on the list, but it's really solid.
Shawn Lane? Loudwire never ceases to disappoint.
Vinnie Vincent, Mark St. John, Mark Owers, Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan; these guys should be on the list.
I love that “no-smile” laugh this guy does 😂
Interesting. Did the ranking change??
I always thought Michael Angelo was the fastest. Can't believe there are two more guitarists faster than him.
I've heard Paul Gilbert but didn't know he was considered the fastest.
Anyway, MAB still felt the most impressive out of all of them on the list.
We all know Shawn Lane and Marshall Harrison would be on this list if Loudwire included fastest players, not fastest WELL KNOWN players
💯
There is a thing as "Too much shred" 🤘😎🍻🥃🎶
Your assessment at the end is RIGHT ON.
Some shredders are shredding just for the sake of shredding. I agree, that making shred has contextual makes the best shredding. The best shredders like Herman Li, Paul Gilbert, Michael Angelo Batio and Angry Monkeysteam maintain metody in their playing that fit the song. Excellent list. Yngwie Malmsteen is my favorite on this list followed by Herman Li.
Coulda been on list: Sam Totman, Nita Straus, Hal-Ca (Haruka Noma), Hazuki, and Miyako. They can all keep shredding contextual to the song. This top ten could have had a lot of honorable mentions.
Mi list in speed:
Shawn Lane
Allan Holdsworth
Rusty Cooley
Yas nomura
I would have liked to see Jason Becker and John Petrucci in place of John5 and Buckethead. Those two guys are incredible, but I personally feel Becker and Petrucci are more suited to this list.
They always overlook Impellitteri…hands down probably faster than any of them on this list.
Michael Romeo….? Guthrie Govan……? Love the fact that you had Jason Becker in there though, man is a God.
I agree with you about Saint Randy Rhoads and King Eddy Van Halen.
