- On April 14, 1989, Jim Sweeney and Dave Nyman traveled to the Alaska Range and set their sights on climbing the Elevator Shaft on Mount Johnson. As Jim reached a snow bulge, looking for a firm anchor by picking his ice ax at the snow, he triggered an avalanche swept off the mountain and hit the mountain face violently, while Dave held firm. Jim had a head injury and shattered his hip, leaving Dave to attempt to save his friend as a barrage of avalanches assaulted the duo.

"It was louder than a Pink Floyd concert. " That's the best Avalanche/Rock concert reference I've ever heard in an adventure video. Five star review. You are awesome!
Haha yes, I loved that too. Jim is definitely a character. My narration could never give him justice. Highly suggest watching the I shouldn't be alive episode about this story!
Jim and Dave are genuinely 183 times tougher than I'll ever be.
They are 183 dumber than I am.
Look, I'm not one of THOSE guys-I'm really not. But you deserve some praise for discussing the elevator shaft on Mt. Johnson, preceded by an attempt on Mt. Dickey, with a straight face.
I also got distracted by Mt Johnson
@@Loralanthalas On the way up or on the way down?
@@KingoftheJuice18 straight up
Oh lord never even thought about it like that! Probably good or would've taken a while to get through 🤣
A stroke of luck to get through it.
Dave is a bad ass!! He never gave up, if you agree.... please like and comment on this video! Let's help Outdoor Disasters with the RUclips algorithm!!
Listen to this awesome American woman!
Dave was like... Wtf you came back with out him? Hell No! Ill go get him myself, FN pansies.
And I can totally picture them sliding down the mountain like penguins!!😂😂
You got it American woman...Let's Do This!!!
Friends like Dave are very rare, but amazing...true Badass for sure!!!
Another OUTSTANDING video! I've just taken another trip to Alaska and climbed Mr. Johnson AND survived myself! I am literally exhausted!!! LOL! You are the best! Thanks for the fantastic trip!
Isn't it great the way he can carry you away to the place it all happens... He has such a way of painting a picture with words!
You know you have a friend when they are willing to risk their life to save you. That was indeed a rough spot to find yourself in with every two hours half a mountain of snow coming at you. Great presentation !
Such a story of sheer survival! I love this story because for once, a person is NOT just left to die. His commitment to his friend was heroic. Who survives multiple avalanches? Amazing!
That mountain wasn't messing around. It wanted them _gone_ !
Seriously! Mt Johnson was not playing around.
Unbelievable disaster!! What heroism!!!❤ I hope they remain friends today!
Good morning JR,
Thank you for the video! I'm so glad that Jim Dave and the Nivers made it through their ordeal on the mountain. This was such a compelling and heartwarming story! I appreciate you and all that you do! Have a wonderful day 🙂
Timber
Omg! Wasn't Dave's determination to save his friend just... Impressive to say the least, and down right honorable!
@@americanwoman6246 yes very impressive and downright honorable.
@@timberdaniels7317 💐hi timber, happy mothers day, yeah, Dave was like fine . The 6 of you can't rescue him, you gave up? Fine! I'll do it myself .. injured and tired. .. Dave is the man!
Hi American Woman happy mother's day to you as well! Yeah I agree, this story reminded me of Simon and Joe on the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. I totally agree Dave is the man! 🙂
@@timberdaniels7317 I thought the chick was going to go into labor or something!! Crazy how things happen!
What a story! Great job, OuttyD
Just started. Love these videos with morning (afernoon) coffee. I'm not gonna lie, some of these scare the crap outta me. My heartbeat even speeds up during the 'challenging' parts.
You are such a great storyteller and have an amazing voice!
I especially love how much you focus on the human spirit, or the will to survive. You make me question my own survivability. (Not that I would climb a mountain, but in general disasters.)
I guess I'm trying to say, your approach to these stories makes me question what I would do. Very thought provoking beyond the particular disaster.
Thankyou and love from Canada
@@RunningInLondon I love how he goes out of the way to find out the details and presents the people as they are, real humans .. not just some character in a story!
Incredible rescue!!!Half a mile in 17hours. That's gotta hurt. I dont know if I could do it?? A beautiful tale of love, bravery and determination. That mountain threw everything it had at them. Truly astounding.
It was amazing. Dave is definitely a hero.
You're right, it IS all about love. This was a PHENOMENAL video. I was on the edge of my seat from the minute Jim Sweeney fell the first time. WHAT a STORY!!! GREAT, GREAT job on this film!!
Thank you so much! This story was very touching to me and made think about the friendships forged throughout our lives. What's great about friends is we get to choose who they are, unlike family. So that bond is so special. And there's a select few in our lives we would do whatever we could for their well being. I can only imagine the thoughts going through Dave's head. But I know he couldn't live with himself if he left Jim behind.
Thank you for a compellingly story.
Thanks for watching!
This video feels like several series of outdoor disasters put into one incident. It is unbelievable what these two men have endured….. and survived!!!!
Tell me about it!
You are fricken kidding me with all those avalanches. How can people go and climb and ski there? 😮
I don't know what made them want to go there before the avalanches!!
Life is an outdoor/indoor disaster it is all about survival, some make it others do not. But the willing to survive in unsurmountable in any condition that life throws at us. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings to all.
What a friend! Wish I had a Dave like Jim. 😊 Glad they made it!
Great video as always. Your closing statement was spectacular 💥💥💥
I appreciate that!
Absolutely 💯
Wow! What a story...
Moral of this story, bring a radio
Amazing story🥰
Thank you! 🙂
Happy Sunday JR! Thank you for another outstanding story!!! Always enjoy these videos soooo much!!! 😊🌼
Good morning my friend! Always appreciate your kind words Mary.
What an incredible story!
Another outstanding video. Thank you, OD! Can’t wait until you hit 100k!
Thank you so much for your support!
That was the first year I lived here in Alaska. There was a lot of snow that year.
Another insane amazing intense video ! 👏👏👏
Another great story of perseverance and willpower ! Outdoors disaster channel is awesome !
ngl that speech at the end got me misty.
I hear ya. Writing it had me in my feelings as well.
Wow, what a story!! As you highlighted at the end, it is a triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the power of friendship. As always, fantastic script and narration. Tip of the hat and thank you!❤
Thank you my friend! The friend relationship is so special. These two were different guys, who had a special bond forged by climbing. And it was that bond that drove Dave to do whatever he could to make sure Jim would make it out. When love is involved, friend or family, there's nothing we wouldn't do for that special person.
What in the world was that husband thinking flying his pregnant wife (7 months is too far along ) above glaciers.
Ah great ❤❤👏
I love your narration. This one is especially great!
Another good one! Thank you!
Thanks again!
That was an awesome story. ✅ truly epic
✌️
Great video. The RUclips like system sucks. It is confusing! Am I "Liking" or "Disliking"?
As long as you're engaging the channel, either or is just fine!

You sound like a mix between Obama and Biden.
The voice is sooo annoying
FANTASTIC!! 🫶🏼 One of the few mountain climbing disaster stories that doesn't seek to push the idea that you owe nobody anything on the mountain. Self survival is all you can do, they say.
I absolutely love that you put the parts about love in this story!
I needed to hear that so bad.
Another great video from Outdoor Disasters! 👍🏼
