  • On April 14, 1989, Jim Sweeney and Dave Nyman traveled to the Alaska Range and set their sights on climbing the Elevator Shaft on Mount Johnson. As Jim reached a snow bulge, looking for a firm anchor by picking his ice ax at the snow, he triggered an avalanche swept off the mountain and hit the mountain face violently, while Dave held firm. Jim had a head injury and shattered his hip, leaving Dave to attempt to save his friend as a barrage of avalanches assaulted the duo.

Thank you so much! This story was very touching to me and made think about the friendships forged throughout our lives. What's great about friends is we get to choose who they are, unlike family. So that bond is so special. And there's a select few in our lives we would do whatever we could for their well being. I can only imagine the thoughts going through Dave's head. But I know he couldn't live with himself if he left Jim behind.

FANTASTIC!! 🫶🏼 One of the few mountain climbing disaster stories that doesn't seek to push the idea that you owe nobody anything on the mountain. Self survival is all you can do, they say.
I absolutely love that you put the parts about love in this story!
I needed to hear that so bad.
