The Most Important Recording Projects Ever (No. 29: Vittorio Negri's Vivaldi Sacred Music)

- Originally recorded for Philips, Vittorio Negri's 10-CD set of Vivaldi's complete sacred music (plus the oratorio Juditha Triumphans) revealed an entirely new dimension to a composer often ridiculed as having written "the same concerto 600 times."

P.S. These performances are available to stream from a pair of older Philips Duo sets. They sound great!
A major recording effort that put this listener on notice that there was more to Vivaldi than the Four Seasons. In this regard, I would also cite I Musici's Vivaldi series, especially their traversal of the sonatas and concertos with opus numbers. Bach enjoyed and took his music seriously as his many transcriptions bear witness. What better endorsement of the Red Priest's genious could there be?
I agree, but I am not comfortable about your statement on Bach / Vivaldi. For me, Vivaldi (and Handel) are well better composers than Bach and do not need to be referred to him.
magnificent achievement....about fifteen years ago decca in canada released a super economical box set - limited edition - of works by vivaldi including the opus with i musici and the sacred music with vittorio negri.... which I always listen to again with great pleasure, it's so beautiful.....if we listen to the singers and choir, it's especially the orchestra that we listen to, lively, detailed, warm....a great realization !
Nulla in mundo pax mentioned in passing, haha. A testament to Vivaldi’s genius. I adore his vocal music about as much as anything else.
Three cheers!!
Great ! Thanks, Dave. I am one of those who suggested it. Still the best "almost complete" set of Vivaldi sacred music. The choirs and the feminine voices (Margaret Marshall, Felicity Lott, Elly Ameling ...) are wonderful. The weak link, to my point of view, is the countertenor Jochen Kowalski (so, it is better to buy another Stabat Mater !).
Another suggestion, whose importance is fully comparable to that set of Vittorio Negri : Vivaldi opus 1-12 by I Musici (19 CDs set on Philips).
I remember hearing Beatus Vir for the first time from this series -- what an earworm! But my favorite Gloria remains the Shadows of Knights'. 😉
We give you more than "a little credit " for tackling artists names that would drive the rookie classical music announcer out of the booth.
We have heard attempts by tyros to take on "Gennadi Rozhdestvensky " or "Hans Knappertsbusch".
It's a real hoot!
Hi Dave, great series, nice video... I agree with most of them, although I esteem the Philips Mozart Edition a little higher than you do... anyway, I'd like to throw in Muti's Cherubini sacred music recordings on EMI for the MIRPE... (everrrrrr)
The hyperion set is out of print. There was a naxos series,,,but that seems to have stopped. And Naieve is starting slowly with some of the sacred works...who can tell, they only issue the next recordings after being sure the earlier ones are impossible to find...or so it appears. I think that is their strategy,.....so interested folks will run out and get it.
Sorry, I'm not "in the Theme", but I would have a kind suggestion, if you have time, if you wish and you deem it worthy: could you review Brahms' Hungarian Dances for piano 4 hands? There is an abundance of wonderful recordings, from the classic Kontarski duo to Tal and Groethuysen ...
Thank you Dave! Does anybody know if these recordings are the same on the Netwon Classics Set?
I have the 7-CD Newton set. 1-6 are the same. Disc 7 on Phillips (featuring the Stabat Mater) is not in the Newton. But Phillips' disc 8 is the same as Newton's disc 7. Disc 8 and 9 on Phillips features Negri's Juditha Triumphans. I have the excellent Robert King version on 2-cds from Hyperion.
They are the same.
Not exactly. The Netwon set has 7 CDs instead of 10. The most important missing piece is the oratorio Juditha Triumphans, which is a pity because Vittorio Negri's interpretation is absolutely wonderful. But it can be found separately as a 2 CDs set on Philips / Decca.
I also like Robert King's recording of Vivaldi's complete sacred music (Hyperion, 10 CD)...
I mentioned that.
@@DavesClassicalGuide Yes, I know.
@@giulioodoni1404 Between Vittorio Negri and Robert King, I prefer personally Negri (the singers are generally better). But for more recent interpretations of Gloria, Dixit Dominus, Stabat Mater ... the interpretations of Rinaldo Alessandrini are absolutely outstanding and would be my first recommendation !
@@philippecassagne3192 We're spoilt for choice! I already have Negri and King, and I'm collecting Alessandrini via Naïve's excellent Vivaldi Edition.
The Hyperion set sounds great, but the "Englishness" of the choir is something I struggle to get past. Vivaldi requires a bit of wildness.
Suggestion for future: Slatkin's Leroy Anderson project on Naxos.
I agree, but Dave did a review of the whole edition about a year ago. You can do a search for it.😀 Inspired by Dave's review, I bought the set and have thoroughly enjoyed it.
